Lewmar Hatch Lens Replacement

  • The acrylic of older hatches is typically crazed by exposure to UV. Few vendors are willing to replace the lens at less than 70 percent of the price of a new hatch. But the acrylic is a stock item for most plastics shops, who can also cut and drill to the pattern of the old lens. Installation is easy. Video 2012.

    Hi Christian, When using 795 or mastic filler, tape the area, fill the gap as required, then for a smooth finish, dip your finger in some soapy water and run it along the filler, remove the tape after a few minutes, DO NOT LET IT DRY with the filler, this will give you a really clean and smooth finish Cheers

    Getting ready to do this on my boat and used your video as my pre review. The important thing (I believe) is to make sure that the acrylic lens sits slightly HIGHER than the frame so water down not collect on the lens. If not, the lens will always be dirty from evaporated water puddles.

    For concave surface on akryl or silicone: Apply sealant then I use to spray on 5% dishwasher soap and scrape of with a t-spoon. Then wet my finger in same soap water and smooth the surface. No tape needed. (Plummers advice).

    Great video I want to replace both of mine because mine are just unsightly. I am going to have to find a "Plastic House" I am really not sure what that is. I really enjoy your videos, Thank you for recording them.

    Hi Christian,
    Great video, thank you, I will use your method for my sailboat.
    Question: What tape did you use between the glass and the frame? (It was a bit hard to hear what you said in the video)
    Thanks again,

    Good video. I have to do mine shortly. According to Lewmar, the 60 has a 12mm thick acrylic lens. Are the older models the same?

    Great video! I have two super hatches that are leaking and think it is through the lens seal on both. Mine are quire a bit larger with 3 hinges. I also noticed that the hinge screws are leaking as well. Wondering what you did to seal the hinge screws. Thanks!

      I wind a bead of butyl tape around the screw or machine screw, which caulks it when driven home. Use only Bed-It tape designed by RC Collins, available here: shop.sailboatowners.com/prod.php?55717/Rod+Collins+and+apos;+Bed-It+Tape

    Very helpful video. This video may be too old but I shall try a question. Curious why acrylic versus polycarb/Lexan?

    • @ChristianWilliamsYachting
      @ChristianWilliamsYachting  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Most such hatches are acrylic. Polycarb is stronger, but scratches more easily and turns yellow in UV. Also much more expensive. More here: ericsonyachts.org/ie/ubs/thelonious-ii-main-hatch-heat-forming-vetus-cowls.377/

    Hi there! Thanks for sharing. How much did you pay for the acrylics? The asked for 120€ plus VAT . I thought its quite overpriced. its a 50x50 12mm acrylic. Is i close to the price you paid? Thanks

    Hi Christian, Where did you get the acrylic here in LA. I need to rebuild 5 of mine on a 997 Beneteau. I tried the place in Santa Monica

      Talk to Craig, his Culver City shop info is here: www.ericsonyachts.org/infoexchange/entry.php?377-Thelonious-II-Main-hatch-forming-Vetus-cowls (There are some deeply weird plastics shops in Santa Monica. Never again for any of them).

      Thank you Very much. I found it after digging a bit deeper into the posts. Hope I see you out there again. I think I got some photos of your boat the last time.
      I almost bought an Erickson 38 but someone had put a deposit on it the day before so I ended up with my Beneteau.

    Hi why not use polycarbonate aka Lexan

    • @ChristianWilliamsYachting
      @ChristianWilliamsYachting  5 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Most sailboats use acrylic. Scratches less, doesn't yellow, cheaper, plenty strong.
