  • There are few film stars who are genuinely loved by their audiences, but back in the days of the silent movie, a comedy duo enjoyed that from the very beginning. Stan Laurel and Oliver Hardy, with their gentle mixture of slapstick and technical skill, brought laughter to millions through the 20th Century and are still continuing to generate laughter to this very day. Yet, like so many of the truly great Kings of Comedy, Laurel and Hardy often found it difficult to find laughter, peace, and contentment in their own lives and the story of the men behind the carefully constructed masks is both enlightening and entertaining. This program is a delightful celebration of the magic of Laurel and Hardy and a rare glimpse into the private lives of these two enigmatic men. From their earliest beginnings through to their final curtain calls, enjoy getting up close and personal with Stan and Ollie. It’s a relationship that started as a business arrangement and blossomed into one of the truest friendships Hollywood has ever known. Whether you’re young or simply young at heart, enjoy stepping back in time to discover the true story of Laurel and Hardy where fact will prove equally as fascinating as fiction.

My grandfather worked his way through University of Pennsylvania playing piano in silent movie houses. He graduated in 1908 to become a civil engineer but many of the most joyful times in his life included that gig as a silent movie pianist. He loved all those movies.

They are the best! My dad introduced to me when I was a pre-schooler! Since he worked shift work, he couldn’t always watch them with me, but he always asked me what “did Laurel and Hardy do today?” I in turn shared time with my son and daughter watching them and now my grandsons! God grant them eternal happiness!

That must have been great! Can you give us details please? I'd love to have met them.
Laurel and Hardy's comedy is timeless. And Ollie was that rarest of things, a straight man who could be absolutely hilarious himself.
It's a real pity that most TV channels no longer show anything made in black and white, as the modern generations will never know about Laurel and Hardy, Charlie Chapin, Buster Keaton, Fatty Arbuckle, Will Hay, Bob Hope, etc. Well, with Hope (an absolute master of comedy) at least some of his films are in colour, so they might get shown again, but TV stations never try to introduce new audiances to old comedy films, for some reason.

No disagreement, War. As much as i respect Chaplin, all those forced attempts at pathos fades into mawkishness and makes him almost unwatchable. But L& H (with Stan's strong hand in it) learned how to move you to pathos while still being crazily funny. Watch the last scene of "Helpmates" with Ollie sitting in the pouring rain, while his reaction is simply to pluck some lint from his clothes. I challenge anyone to look at that scene and not feel deep pathos - while they're still laughing their heads off!

Haha I had not noticed that you had misspelled it! I was just referring to your comment about SL being born in Ulverston but his comedy being born in Glasgow! I understand that the family moved around a lot in the north of England - where I come from - and other places eg Gladgow.
I always loved L and H more than Chaplin and find the stories behind the real men sad and touching (and a bit naughty particularly in SL's case!)

I've turned off the sound to write this comment because that blasted pano is just too much. Enjoying Laurel and Hardy films now as an adult I now appreciate all the talent that went into making their films and that includes the actors and actress' who appeared with them. It would be nice to see documentaries on some of them:- James Finlayson, Mae Busch, Charles Hall, Arthur Housman and all. Laurel and Hardy worked with some of the best and some of the best worked with Laurel and Hardy. Sorry - but I will not watch to the end of this; ahhh that piano.

Must have been copyright reasons but whichever films they're talking about it's always a clip from Flying Deuces.

Oh my God, stop the music!! The music soundtrack RUINS this documentary! I can't watch anymore!

All the clips are from the same movie - is "Flying Deuces" the only movie you had access to?

Not half as unbearable as the narrator's whiny voice.
