One of the most beautifully written musical scores ever written for a series such as this History of Hollywood by Kevin Brownlow. I love the title of his book "The Parade's Gone By"" as indeed the parade has passed.
I get chill bumps every time I hear the music performed. Hearing Allan Dwan and all the other great Director's and people that literally began the film industry in Hollywood. Gloria Swanson always spoke very highly of Allan Dwan.
Such a treat to actually hear the voices of these very early pioneers of American film and to have it all narrated by James Mason only ads to the treat!

It is a shame King Vidor, though honored all too late in life by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences (Oscars), has largely been forgotten except by film students and cinephiles. Such a fine director, even in lighter stuff with comedienne Marion Davies (The Patsy; Show People). He lasted right into the 1940's and 50's sound era with Duel in the Sun and War and Peace. The modern musical score here for the "Crowd" is superb.

"Sunrise" is a great movie. IMO it has stood the test of time. "The Crowd" was also a fine movie. We have both of them on DVD.

I saw a screening of The Crowd in August of 2022. As usual, a film is so much better when you see it on a large screen.

Brownlow, in a sense, rescued silent era Hollywood from being forgotten.

Poor ms. Viola Davis to lose her fianc'e to a airplane stunt, then lose her husband to the spainish flu. That woman saw some heartache.

That is a great philosophy by Thalberg. You have a profitable studio and you can afford a couple of pictures that took risks. If they succeeded and made money, great. But they would at least bolster the studio's reputation for innovation and ideas, which attracted writers, directors and actors.

Contrary to what many people have said, MGM was neither the biggest nor most powerful major studio. But it was far and away the most prestigious and successful.

Eleanor Boardman's acting in "The Crowd" is so contemporary unlike much of the acting seen in silent films.

    • @kenlee1416

I've seen some of this contemporary acting, and they are off putting.

Wouldn't say contemporary but it was above the ham that was common in that era.

Clara Bow, the girl in the headscarf in the title sequence, had a beautiful face and looked prettier in that short clip, with her hair tied back, than she ever did in any of her publicity headshots, when her perfect features were overwhelmed by mounds of puffy hair, cascading curls and the idiotic "beestung" mouth that was all the rage at the time.
