  • (How to watch with sound in the comment section is explained)Hi sorry I had to remove the original, but I didn't want to trigger some copyright strike by using the soundtrack, even if is not claimed I respect the authors and I remove it. The reupload is ~80GB uncompressed, with better noise reduction, the flags are still black, sorry no time to fix that.

This was filmed in Cottage Grove, Oregon using several vintage RR engines from a short line. The town still celebrates its part in the film. The film was a fiasco financially for Keaton, it never made its costs back. Only recently was this became a silent era treasure. Interestingly the wrecked locomotive was left in the creek until salvaged in WW2. Worth millions today

    A couple of interestng facts:
They didn't tell the girl she would get all wet when trying to refill the water tank on the train. this was so they could get a more realistic reaction in the scene.
The bridge collapse was a real scene, with a real engine destroyed.

This movie, A True American Classic, is based on an actual event taken place during the Civil War. Called Great Locomotive Chase. Disney did it's own movie years after Keaton completed his comedy version. If you are interested the Disney title is, of course, "The Great Locomotive Chase" Starring Fess Parker.
No one could touch Keaton's commic version to my thinking, pure fun. Thank You for posting the film for another generation to discover. Well done!

The place was packed and noisy but when this movie started the place was nearly dead quiet .
When Buster was on the General everybody cheered , a couple of guys myself included gave out with a Rebel Yell during the chase .
I scared the hell out of my friends and dates . I told them ( jokenly ) The. J R in my name was also for " Johnny Reb "
They said Yea Right and everyone around us also laughed .

*Mini tutorial for enthusiast colorizers out there*
This will be long one. The colorization process can be done mostly automated, depending on the quality of the footage you work with.Other that the professional hollywood tools, there are some made made open source for everyone out there. Some like : *Richard Zhan's* - (richzhang.github.io/colorization/) and the one we going to use by *Jason Antic* - (github.com/jantic/DeOldify)
    *************
The General" enter the public domain in 1954, after the copyrights wasn't renovated after 28 years. I think is duty for everyone who loves such old classic is to keep them alive in some way or another.
By giving new colors I hope to resurrect it back to life. This is timeless piece of art, "In 1989, The General was selected for preservation in the United States National Film Registry by the Library of Congress as being "culturally, historically, or aesthetically significant"
That is also the favorite work of Keaton, he said: "I was more proud of that picture than any I ever made. Because I took an actual happening out of the...history books, and I told the story in detail too."
If you want to see it in better quality you will be able, Cohen Media Group will scan it in better resolution that I ever will be able to improve it: th-cam.com/video/W-8Glmc7_XM/w-d-xo.html
Here is version in black & white (in 4k ) by another youtuber: th-cam.com/video/YWm587wKKVw/w-d-xo.html
    ***********
The work of colorization can be labor and processing intensive, having a good hardware and a lot of spare time will be good starting point, but if you don't , kind people have made something called a "notebook". That won't be programing tutorial so I will keep it short. Notebooks are ways to make your life easier to run programs written in Python, like having a template where you just add what it said to be added. The great thing about it is that you can run those online, even not necessary to be your hardware. Here it comes the *Google Colab*
    Part 1: Preparation before colorization
-Have your video splitted into short parts (I make them 10 min just to avoid something to go wrong or not to waste time if it fails).
-Before colorization clearing and posible restoration. There are some tools that can come handy. I found Film9 (contact41766.wixsite.com/film9/home-1) to be able to perform some good work to remove some dust and lines, it's free. The other thing you can use is
DIAMANT-Film Restoration (paid only) or I found this extension for Premiere - Neat Video (www.neatvideo.com/) pretty neat huh? It have demo version, but is heavy on the CPU so... go along with whatever you got that works for you.
(That step can be done after the colorization too)
    - The actual colorization - Go to (colab.research.google.com/github/jantic/DeOldify/blob/master/VideoColorizerColab.ipynb) Be sure to log in with your google account, the use of the site Google Colab is free. Google make it so everyone can use the computing power for training model or similar things. So nice from them! You can use it for max of 12h per session, while you have left the tab of your browser open. To use it follow the instructions in the notebook, to make it operational "run" (press the triangle) of every segment and wait it finish before clicking on the next segment. When you get to "Colorize!!!" step, you have to provide link to your video. It can be from TH-cam, Google Drive or anything supported by TH-cam dll downloader (ytdl-org.github.io/youtube-dl/supportedsites.html). Put your link there. Hit run.
! *Note* before you spend time colorizing, first make experiment with the values of "render_factor!", that was my mistake. Sometimes lower value produce better result on lower quality footage and vice versa for higher.
    - Your video will appear at the path that will be written, just from the left click on "Files" and navigate to "result", you got to files - with sound and without. Right click and download it (it won't be instant, please wait on the page).
    - Well you maybe got your video colorized, are we done? Not yet, or maybe we are, but not likely. You need to assemble your video parts back into movie and to color correct some mistakes in the AI colorization.
    - *Some good video editing products* , if you don't have such, here is what I recommend.
    - Adobe Premiere (paid and heavy on resources, with a lot of color corrections is almost impossible to export something without crashing your pc, work with hardware acceleration best on newer GPU's)
    - Davinci Resolve - people claim to have better color correction tools, from my little exposure to it, I saw big potencial from this free and paid product. It heavy on low end pc's just as Premiere.
    - Filmora - it have free version, it's basic compared to the other two, but it is light and somewhat provide everything you need for your homemade non-professional projects. I had to export the general with it.
The knowledge is to shared, not be keeped in some 300$ textbook. If you have suggestions or something that can be helpful, please share it.

If soundtrack is not claimed why would you remove the version with sound? I mean it's such an old film, it's probably already a public domain. I doubt that someone would flag it. I don't think that you'd have any problem with it what so ever

    • @DarkGT
      @DarkGT  4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

Is not that simple. I won't remove it if wasn't so damn popular. Being public domain doesn't include the soundtrack, which is modern copyright protected work. If I want to monetize it with that sound I have to pay licence or I risk get my channel terminated if the copyright holder decide to manually strike my channel.

I have become so frustrated and dismayed by movie makers over the last 20 years.
Possibly it's just nostalgia on my part but I think there was a time when movies were better. The 90s was the decade of my childhood and it saw the coming of Jurassic Park, Toy Story, some of Disney's best work, even popcorn movies like Independence Day were better then the popcorn movies we have now.
But in recent years it's been slapdash sequels, remakes, revival of old franchises which are designed to pander to fans yet give us nothing of what we want. And if they get backlash from fans, they scramble to create a sequel that backpedals and that just make it more annoying. And as for gender and race bending, it just feels off and you can't say you hate it without fearing you'll be called a bigot. And yet despite everything the big studios seem keep making huge profits.
Something I'd like to do is organise a kind of protest event against Hollywood's dip in quality, IE opening a free movie theatre and showing films like this. Ones that really cared about quality.
The idea would be to strike back at the big studios who put profits over quality by giving people a free and alternate choice to what they offer. And perhaps remind people what real quality is. There are people who have never seen a movie older than 1985!
Also I would use it to protest this runaway PC and social correctness trend that's been going on for decades. I'm no racist but these people are throwing tantrums over anything with a hint of racial, religious or gender bias. They want to ban old cartoons and films like Song of the South. And Hollywood keeps making every group in every TV show and movie as multi ethnic as possible. Imagine how they'd react to a movie where the Confederates are the protagonists.

    • @DarkGT
      @DarkGT  7 หลายเดือนก่อน

True words my friend. We live in the years of creative decline, everything made today is mere shadow of what there was back in the days.
You can't harm Hollywood, even the actors can't strike for long, where else can they work? Disney bought every studio out there. The truth is all focused on profits and is not the domestic one, the success sometimes is determined by how well the Chinese audience will like some crappy movie.
I got this movie from the Internet archive web site, plenty of old goodies that are copyright free. If you intend to introduce such classics, try with some kind of traveling theater, project the movies on the wall of the building, no doubt someone will be curious.

    • @EccentricGentelman
      @EccentricGentelman 7 หลายเดือนก่อน

We could hurt Hollywood if enough people stopped going to their movies, they only make money if we give it to them. With enough people we could drive the creatively bankrupt to actual bankruptcy. @@DarkGT

Hi, in the comment section I have comment with label "Mini tutorial" it have all of your info you need. I will add even more information for you.
*Mini tutorial for enthusiast colorizers out there*
That will be long one. The colorization process can be done mostly automated, depending on the quality of the footage you work with.Other that the professional hollywood tools, there are some made made open source for everyone out there. Some like : *Richard Zhan's* - (richzhang.github.io/colorization/) and that we going to use by *Jason Antic* - (github.com/jantic/DeOldify)
      ***********
The work of colorization can be labor and processing intensive, having a good hardware and a lot of spare time will be good starting point, but if you don't kind people have made something called a "notebook".
You need to assemble your video parts back in movie and to color correct some mistakes in the AI colorization.
      - Filmora - it have free version, it's bacis compared to the other two, but it light and somewhere provide everything you need for your homemade non-professional projects. I had to export the general with it.
The knowledge is to shared, not be keeped in some 300$ textbook. If you have suggestions or something that can be helpful, please share it.
      *Reserved space for links*

      @@DarkGT So I can't use it?

    • @DarkGT
      @DarkGT  2 ปีที่แล้ว

@@stealcentral6853 There is nothing preventing you from using it, just read the copyright rules that apply, verify that you will have the rights and nobody can't bother you. For example Charlie Chaplin's work is under the copyright of his decedents, so you can't use it (unless it is from very early on). Disney doesn't like their work to be public domain, so they find loopholes to prevent that. The Frankenstein can't be used as is, because the book doesn't portray the appearance of the monster and only got associated from the movies, thus exception. I highly suggest you get better quality of this Buster Keaton movie, use the latest (paid if possible) tools and do the work yourself, there is much that can be done to improve this movie if more time and proper tools are used. Even if some troll appear, you can say this work is your derivative work and is nothing like the original.
