  • With a population of slightly more than 10 million, North Carolina is the 9th largest state in the U.S. by population.
The Southern state offers warmer temperatures than much of the U.S., and its varied terrain, including both mountains and coastal areas, offers something for everyone.
Living in North Carolina puts you in prime adventure territory. Residents here enjoy 300 miles of pristine beaches and some of the country’s most beautiful old-growth hardwood forests and mountain tops.
The famous Research Triangle Park, an area traversing Durham, Raleigh, and Chapel Hill, is a big contributor to many jobs.
More than 200 companies are based here, including the likes of RTI International, IBM, Cisco, Johnson & Johnson, Syngenta, and GlaxoSmithKline.
The State also has some of the best colleges in America, with Duke ranking among the top five schools in the country.
North Carolina’s state school system includes 16 colleges and universities with campuses in coastal, mountain and Piedmont areas.
Private schools such as Duke University, Wake Forest University, Elon University, Davidson College and Queens University of Charlotte are located within the state.
Accounting, finance, nursing, motor sports and engineering majors are offered at campuses throughout the state.
Internships and cooperative opportunities are available in the larger cities like Charlotte, Raleigh and Greensboro.
With great weather, a breathtaking landscape, a thriving job market and some of the nicest neighbors around,
North Carolina has become one of the top destinations for young professionals, growing families and retirees.
If you are looking for a nice place to settle down, here are the 10 best places to live in North Carolina you definitely need to think about.
    10. Wilmington. (good for retiree)
    9. Charlotte. (good for retiree, job, low cost of living)
    8. Asheville. (good for retiree)
    7. Raleigh - Durham. (affordable, job, raise a family)
    6. Greensboro. (retire, raise a family)
    5. Chapel Hill. (retire, education)
    4. Wake Forest. (affordable, education)
    3. Davidson. (retire, raise a family)
    2. Apex. (raise a family, affordable)
    1. Cary. (job, raise a family)
Thanks for watching this video. I hope it's useful for you.

I’ve lived in North Carolina all my life (55 years), and all I have to say is whoever created this video is OBVIOUSLY not from NC. Most of this information is based on income, job market, and housing cost. There is SO much more to LIVING and LOVING North Carolina than this! All I can suggest if you are debating on moving here, do a LOT of research! The large cities usually aren’t worth the money when it means sacrificing your safety and mental health.

Asheville has the highest cost of living in the state. Housing is in very short supply and is very expensive to say the least. Asheville enjoys the highest water rates in the state along with mostly low paying service jobs. As a native of Asheville, I can say the local government is doing a great job in pricing out the natives and replacing them with transplants!!

Hello from Sanford NC! As the daughter of a career Air Force veteran I can tell you that every state has its charms and it's downfalls. It is up to each individual to decide their own path. Home is where you make it, wherever that may be. I am a frequent visitor to Wilmington and know the areas to avoid, much like my hometown of North Charleston, SC. Charleston and Wilmington are both beautiful with lots to see and do. My parents were both from rural areas of North Carolina and I choose to live in one of those areas that I love. By the way, not one mention of Fayetteville, home to one of the largest military posts in the world. Our population has grown by leaps and bounds but I welcome the men and women who keep us safe. Do not rely on a video to decide where you live, rather get in your car and take a day trip. You might be pleasantly surprised.

Susan Turney. Hello. I lived in Siler City and Ramseur , NC. In the 80 & 90's. I worked at Collins & Aikman in Siler City. I use to go to Sanford alot. I worked with a man from Sanford, Alvin Taylor .
I took my youngest daughter & my grandkids to Carolina Beach in 2017 & we came back through Sanford. It has really changed alot ! Siler City & Ramseur have changed a lot too. They don't look like the same places.
I like it in the small towns & country sides of NC.
Nice to hear from someone in my old stomping grounds. Lol

Couple of things this video does not mention if you are thinking of moving to NC.
1 Yes we have all 4 seasons, often in the same day. There will be days you will want a coat in the early morning, light jacket by mid morning, t shirts by noon, shorts in the afternoon.
2 If you have seasonal allergies get on something. If you have never had seasonal allergies get tested before you come here. If not, come late February or early March, you will be miserable. The pollen season usually lasts into Mid May or early June.
3 Please note, if you do move here you will find most native North Carolinians to be welcoming and friendly. JUST DON'T TRY TO CHANGE THINGS TO HOW THEY WERE WHEREVER YOU CAME FROM. There are reasons we don't do things like they did in Buffalo.

The education is good, with graduation rates in the 90 percentile. Not to forget, Krispy Kreme was made here. Winston-Salem is a thriving city and should have been on the List. Seriously, the humidity is so high in that area that you can actually see mold growing on people's roofs! The area is very vulnerable to hurricanes, and can get tornadoes during severe storms. There's even an article on Wikipedia about the multiple tornadoes that went through the area in 2011, even going through downtown Raleigh. They just had between 5 - 8 inches of rain yesterday in a 24 hr period. They should change the nickname of Raleigh from "City of Oaks" to Rainy Raleigh.

If you decide to relocate to Asheville, it would be in your best interest to visit it first. There is a severe shortage of housing, and those buying should count on making a cash offer in the high six figure range. Most jobs are in the service industry, making it nearly prohibitive for young, first time buyers to even compete. Rentals are scarce and their prices have skyrocketed in the past year.

No fireplace, walk in shower no tub, washer dryer connection. Needs to be near shopping and Doctors. I live in Texas in a city that is only around 45,000 -50,000 and would really like a city like that. I would consider North Texas, North Carolina, Georgia, and Tennessee. I am a Texas Girl through and through so it needs to be a place with the same values I have. The rent in Texas is soaring and even the places for Senior Citizens are too high. Most Seniors do not make over 2200 a month and cannot live in their home state anymore. Something needs to be done to lower the cost of living for Seniors.

I'm an Asheville native who left after college for a Florida space coast job in the aerospace industry. I came back after less than two years there, wanting to get back to this wonderful area. I had the good fortune to secure an engineering and eventually management position which enabled me to live and retire here after 39 years. I must say this video is mostly BS. Sure, the mountains are absolutely wonderful, and the medical facilities are first rate, but the liberals have taken over and ruined the charming southern town I used to love. I live outside the city limits and hardly ever venture there because I don't want to encounter droves of tourists and others who have come here to see what all the fuss is about. If you visit or move here, above all don't take your family downtown after dark as you will be constantly approached by panhandlers and the like. Homeless people are everywhere, especially in the warmer months. Hotels and condos have sprung up all over downtown. We have been introduced to rush-hour gridlock by so much traffic overwhelming our highways and roads. Many younger folks have left because there are essentially no jobs (the global corporation that was my employer in Asheville relocated to Mexico about the time I retired). That, coupled with the relatively high cost of real estate (retirees moving here in droves, with lots of old money), makes it very difficult for persons just starting out to establish a permanent home. I was lucky to have had a good-paying position and the time to build equity in my retirement and my home before things changed.
