    We’re spoiled in the modern era of knives, in that even budget knives have workable steels that won’t immediately dull, and we can disassemble and clean them with relative ease. I suppose an argument can be made for the ultimate capability of a knife, e.g. what it can do if pressed, but for most of us, we buy premium steels knowing that they will outperform us.

      We’re also in the era of overpriced junk with weak heat treats. Market is over saturated with high end poorly heat treated “super steel”.

  • @kongandbasses8732
    @kongandbasses8732 3 ปีที่แล้ว +21

    You are absolutely right when it comes to steel. There is a lot of corksniffing going on, and a lot of marketing.
    I have a lot of knifes made of the 420 and 440 steel family, and all this blades still are in good shape, hold an edge quite a while, are easy to sharpen, even in the field.
    So are my Cold Steel knifes, made of SK5, AUS 8 / 10, 8Cr13MoV, even 4116, Cold Steel knows how to heat threat their steel. They had me 35 years back, when I bought my first San Mai Tanto and the Trail Master in good old Carbon V.
    Why spending three times the money for CPM3V, D2 or other "supersteels" when I even don't use the blade on a daily basis, as lot of the people do? Not everybody is a hunter, goes fishing or hiking for weeks or uses his personal knife for bushcraft or survival.
    There is nothing wrong with a 440 c blade steel. If you have the money and if you are not afraid of eventually losing your knife somewhere in the woods, maybe because you are a collector and keep your knifes in the drawer, you are free to buy expensive knifes with supersteel blades.
    You do yours. But there's no need to put a knife down just because it is made of not so expensive steel.

      I'm an avid backpacker, but I don't spend money on high end knives for that purpose. I bring a good fixed blade and a folder with steels that are really easy to sharpen with my WS field sharpener.

      True, also 95% of all the "knifenuts" dont even use their shit the way it's designed and build for... I can't understand buying any sort of hard use/overbuild folder and only rip up amazon boxes with it.

    Funny you’d be talking about 440c, my son in-law was asking about a brand he seen on FB (ya dirty word) I’m telling him to stay away because of the difficulties sharpening the blade profile and steel it’s a Whiteknuckeler in 440c. I actually love the design and that you can scout carry but neither one of us are pros at sharpening and I’m not sure this is worth the money $150. I’m like you I like premium steel but your quote at the end was correct! “Life’s short carry what you like and learn to sharpen” Actually leaning toward the White River Caper myself! Thanks I love y’all’s vids

I have knives in 3v, 35vn but don't use them much and some of them I gave to friends as gifts. In the field, well treated 1095, 440c, 5160, aus 8a it's all I need. Greetings from France.

    I repair things and need a reliable edc. My collection is small but the steel ranges from 440 and 8cr13mov to 154cm, s30v through to s110v. More often than not ill be carrying my cheap leatherman crater over a spyderco etc. because the crater does what i need it to do and im not precious about it. Edge retention isnt as good, but it sharpens easily. The premium knives all have great feel and features but being budget concious means they dont get the same level of use. I think choosing the right blade shape and grind with a decent heat treat is more important to me than a more premium steel.

    The most important facet of knife steel, which also happens to be the hardest to quantify on your own, is heat treatment. A custom heat treated cpm 154 will blow a production m390/204p/20cv out of the water.

    I agree with you about EDC knives steels, anyways, if I can choose, I prefere a tough steel with a good edge retention but not hard to sharpen for folders. I care my knives so I don't really need a high rust resistance. So for exemple mk5, 1095, O1 or CPM M4 for me.

    I think your opinion is shared by most people and sometimes I think my knife life would be less complicated if I shared your views on steel. At least for my folders...
    I'm very particular, and like K390 or S90V on my folders, because of how they cut. They're aggressive steels, packed with carbides, that slice so well. The edge retention is nice, but the quality of the slice is just so satisfying that it has become my favorite characteristic of these steels.
    My fixed blades don't really matter, as long as the steel is tough enough or stainless enough. Edge retention and exotic steels aren't important on my fixed blades.

    What folding knives would you recommend that have substantial hand filling handles for a large hand? I like the look of the Spyderco Shaman but I'm struggling to find comparable knives. An important factor for me is a handle that is amenable to inverted grips, e.g. chest lever cuts. Most of the larger hard-use knives seem to have grooves and juts on the lower side that make upside-down grips somewhat unusable.

    I like my seal pup Elite from SOG. It's AUS 8 but man it's a lethal little knife and I would bet my life on it to perform as it was intended to. Steel doesn't really matter to me either, it's the design and functuality of the knife. I know how to sharpen a knife so no biggie there. Also I have had 440 c blades from Entrek knives and boy do they perform like knives twice their asking price.

    I agree with you about knife steel 100%. If you buy a 5 dollar knife it will probaly dull after a few uses but you can get some really nice knifes under 50 that are not premium knife steel but hold an edge good. I laughed when you said learn how to sharpen because a lot of people want to buy a good knife that holds an edge for a long time but don't know how to get a knife very sharp. Once you know how to sharpen you can have your knife razor sharp in 5 minutes especially with all of the new convenient sharpening systems out there. Just spend a little time learning how to do it and you're set for life. No knife stays sharp for ever. However I am a guy who spends more money on premium steels because the knife will essentially last longer if you don't have to sharpen it as much and I want my knife to last long enough that they have sentimental value because I like my knifes that much 😆

    Love the series! Is there a story behind your aversion to "lashing" a knife onto a stick creating that "spear" survival option? I know it used to be a popular feature in the past but don't see it as much these days. Just curious thx!

    • @knifecenter
      @knifecenter  3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      In a survival situation, your blade is likely one of your most important assets, and you wouldn't want to lose it in a "spear" scenario gone wrong. I do see limited uses for it though. If you need to cut something out of a tree - an ejected pilot needing to cut his pack out of an otherwise unreachable tree branch is a classic example - or to access food that could be there. Otherwise, if you need a spear for defensive or hunting uses, keep your knife safe and unlost on your hip and carve a point into your pole and fire harden it. -DCA

      For something like making a spear or arrow I would use a "Throwing knife" .They are cheap and you can get them in sets, plus if you lose one your not out much. I have full size and extra small ones in my packs from just this reason.

    I have larger hands and looking for something with a little different shape than the Tenacious but still with a good Spyderco feel.
    Thanks!

    Steel has clearly become a selling point for knives but to me as a collector, there isn't enough time in the day to blunt all my knives and I feel that I would actually buy more if I wasn't paying so much for super steel. I wonder if a large firm like Spyderco could offer a new design in two steel options, one of them more affordable and see which sells best. Something like S30V or VG10 is really all I need.

    Hey DCA, I agree with your comments about gravitating to a steel that can be maintained. You didn't mention any high end steels in your comment. I am a Spyderco fan and I have found that, for high end steels, S30v , CTS-XHP and Cruware fall into this good maintenance category (as opposed to an s110v or similar). What high end steel (if any) fall into this good maintenance category for you?

    • @knifecenter
      @knifecenter  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      I haven't extensively used Cruwear yet, but I am planning on changing that at some point. For me, 3V is a good contender. It obviously isn't as easy to sharpen as most non-particle steels, but for the effort it takes, I do seem to get a better "return on time-investment" in the edge holding department. -DCA

      1095 isn’t the toughest steel on its own, 15n20 is very tough. When you forge weld them together they they kind of equalize. I’ve gotten 1095/15n20 PWS very hard and very thin and it had excellent ductility.

    For me too, the steel isn't the most important part of the knife. The design is much more in the foreground. (I hope you can say that in English). Also, I like to maintain my knifes. Take them apart, clean them, oil them, sharpen and strop them. It's all part of being a knife owner. (But of course I advise not to choose any of the no name steels out there)

  • @mikaaalto3135

    Personally, I don't give a hoot about blade steel. My blades are all made of cheap steel. A Mora Basic 511 costs around 4-5 dollars at the hardware store here in Sweden. Holds up perfectly (for my use). Edge retention is not a big thing for pocket knives you use occasionally for small tasks. I like the steel in Victorinox knives. Very rust resistant and easy to maintain and sharpen. I really don't use my knives that much so I don't need crazy edge retention.
