  • Today we go back to one of my favorite shows on TLC (Extreme Cheapskates). We follow a family TERRORIZED by their cheapskate father as he hides finances, pays for dinner with change, and turning his house into a school.

As a retail worker, my stomach dropped when he said he was paying 92 bucks in coins. Every coin that you pay with has to be manually counted by someone making minimum wage at the end of a graveyard shift. Plus all the coins that other people have paid with. ALSO that amount of coins wouldn't even fit in the register, meaning that some poor soul has to stand there, separate the coins by value, and then put them into those flimsy paper rolls, all the while continuing to handle customers.

I remember reading a few years back a reddit post or something by a thrifty blogger who wanted to be on this show, because she wanted to share all sorts of helpful saving tips. They told her she could be on the show, but her lifestyle wasn't wacky enough so they sent her a list of things that she would have to pretend to do in order to be on the show. In the end, she saw the true nature of what they were doing and declined the offer.

he has a 100 racks saved up so what he's doing does work but likely not to the extent he realizes. Since I believe the van he purchased is something you couldn't claim on taxes (it's weird but if your car weighs a certain amount I think 6,000 it's not taxable) or if you could it likely doesn't have great gas mileage since it's a tradesman van used to haul tools and equipment so if it hits that 6k mark it's likely not saving much.
Secondly if his goal was to be cheap why even throw family events at all? If you lived as modestly as possible you'd scoff at the word anniversary dinner. I think most would agree that these types of events you either go big or go home so chinese is fine being cheap about it is fine but only 3 plates is invalidating any savings.
Lastly I think his son is gonna have to pay for therapy if his dad is this weird which wont save his son money.

This show is so irritating because, as you mentioned, there are ways to save money without living like this. There's no reason to pay in change. And a cloth towel would be cheaper and classier than a paper towel dispenser. My kitchen table that I still use is something I found at the curb on big trash day 15 years ago. Heck, my TV stand is a desk I found at the curb also that my dad and Grandpa helped me cut down and varnish. Nearly free!

That shit embarrasses me so much! I stayed back as every was leaving for the Parking lot to tip the server an extra $20. My wife and I our living in our car working on saving up for a place. I was just so heart broken to see someone treating another HUMAN with such disrespect I was so ashamed for that man I felt the need to try and make it right. My wife and I also had a roommate call to order pizza once. He was so mean to the person who answered the phone before hanging up on him. I left the room and called the pizza place back to apologize on his behalf. WE NEED TO START TREATING EACH OTHER BETTER! We all have shitty things that are going on, and we’ve all been through fucked up times. We should all be a team, and NOT out for just our selves. From the perspective of a child having a father that acted this exact same way.....he was looking out for all of us. He didn't spend money and recycled what he had, in order to save. He never spent this money on himself. He was looking out for all of us. (His children and grandchildren).
You would think, by looking at him on the street, that he was homeless. It would pain him to spend his hard-earned money on himself....he wanted nothing more than to save it for his family. He was so selfless. That meant sacrificing luxuries today in order to provide for tomorrow.
He left this world giving all of us the security that we could never have amassed in our lifetimes. He gave us wisdom. He gave us the ability to understand that saving is worth far more than spending.
WE LOVE YOU PAPA. THANK YOU SO MUCH!!! We shall take your wisdom and make sure that ourselves, and our children will do the same.

The fact that he has 2 Ph.Ds actually explains a lot. I imagine he made a lot of sacrifices to pay for his education early in his life and is dealing with the lingering financial trauma. If any of this is real, then he needs serious mental help for the sake of his family. He can certainly afford a therapist.

So say $72 plus maybe $5-7 tax and then a tip, and then im hoping he wasn't a absolute scumbag and left at least like a $10-$12 tip. Thats literally the lowest he SHOULD leave as a tip for thet amount.

In Germany you pay a deposit of 25 cents on every plastic bottle and when you return them to the supermarket you get the money back. One cleaning lady at my school told me that she collects about 20 bottles each day. Many students are to lazy to carry the bottles back home and just put them in the trash. My mum would have been very angry with me if I had wasted money like this but luckily for the cleaning lady many other children weren’t taught to value money, no matter how little the value is. She made around 150€ per month just from collecting and returning bottles. At the time that was about 10% of the monthly median net income in Germany and covered most of her food expenses for her and her son.

The way Chris talks just basic logic and common sense is almost like, a relief for my brain after dealing with just reality and people in general~ He legitimately keeps me sane at times because even on the worst days, I can watch his videos and I'll be like, laughing out loud within five minutes even if I'm sitting alone in my room~ He makes you feel not so alone when it seems like the rest of the world has just gone completely bonkers~
