To Bid You Farewell has one of my all time favorite bass lines. The small touches in it, harmonics and slides, help add so much to the atmosphere. Plus... that entire song build up! Powerful stuff when added to the lyrics. Absolute banger of an Opeth tune. 🤘
Man I can't find a single person talking about Still Life. It's the point at which they leaned heavily into their progressive flirtings from earlier works. It's the album that concretely solidified them as "not just another melodic/blackened death metal band." Face of Melinda, Benighted, Serenity Painted Death, man, all of the songs off of it are so amazing.
It's funny that the first verse on The Wilde Flower starts with "Sun hangs high I turn away" and on To Bid You Farewell it starts with "I am awaiting the sunrise"
Opeth - Dirge for November. I know it is not the proggiest song, but I'm sure Doug will appreciate its dark beauty. And the band Ne Obliviscaris deserves a listen too.
I remember Mikael saying that he brought a lute to the Morningrise recording session, planning to use it for some of the acoustic parts. But for whatever reasons, it didn't happen. He talks a bit about it on the Roundhouse Tapes DVD, just before The Night and the Silent Water.
If _To bid you farewell_ gave you "medieval" vibes, the early albums had *a lot* of counterpoint, where both guitars, and sometimes the bass, played different melodies on top of each other. It's what made me love them.
10:53 To Bid You Farewell is one of my favorite Opeth songs. Not typical for them in the early years; there is no growling or screeching. Just melancholy and introspection. I do love the build at the end when the electric guitars come in, and the ending is just beautifully sad. Thanks for the video!
How can You not love "To Bid You Farewell"? It has been my clock alarm sound for 20+ years.... The clean sounds comes from an era, when Mikael was working in the guitar shop and he was selling and playing acoustic guitars, lot of time to create an epic riffs... Still Morningrise is one of my favorite albums.
Your little brother may be a metal head, but he knows how to select the softer songs of Opeth (and the best part of them, even if they are the only group that can make me like growling). Thanks to both of you
I love the progression in Michael's clean vocals. He was always good, but on the early albums you can hear a bit of insecurity and fragility in his voice, while on the later albums he's just full of confidence. I wonder if that confidence played a part in him abandoning the growls...
Early Opeth went hard on the guitar harmonies, both acoustic and heavy parts. After incorporating the keyboard they didn't have to rely on that for building their soundscape.
Ayreon gets blocked way too much for reaction videos. That's why you can only find reactions to "The Day the World Breaks Down". I myself tried to do a cover for In the Garden of Emotions and it got blocked worldwide
To Bid You Farewell is the first Opeth song I heard that let me know these guys were special. Back on their first two albums they had a ton of great ideas but were often really rough in their transitions, but when they finally figured out how to write coherent songs/progressions they basically became (IMHO) the best metal band on the planet.
That was amazing, one of my favourite bands, especially older more emotionally gripping material. I miss your hands-on-piano musical analysis though, I hope we see those more often. Good day sir.
To bid you farewell is one that i've been surprised you havent attempted! It was the song that hooked me into Opeth. Cant wait! (actually listed as "waiting" at the moment :D :)
@Fangalatic I guess that someone should also explain to Mikael as well, since he himself have talked about being influenced by black metal in the earlier albums.
@Fangalatic Sure, that’s why Opeth kept appearing on black metal compilations up until 1999. Black metal is a wide genre, it’s not only about blast beats and tremolo picking, even vocals are not necessary, the whole genre doesn’t sound like Dark Funeral or some similar bands. Some bands don’t even use real instruments except guitar and they are still black metal as hell. There is no death metal in early Opeth. Okay, MAYH has some strong death metal vibes at times, but it’s still black metal most of the time. Do you really gonna sit there, listen to April Ethereal or Karma and think “yep, this is totally death metal”?Early Opeth fit black metal perfectly, even with all the folky and proggy elements. Not that it was that much of an argument since Opeth were blending a lot of genres together since the beginning, but calling early Opeth death metal is like calling their latest albums blues. Just no.
Their latest album, In Caudu Venemum, was first recorded with all vocals in their native Swedish. Then the vocals were re-recorded in english, adding this as a bonus disc.
These vidoes are utterly fantastic! I love your Opeth and general metal vidoes. You shine a completley new perspective on the music which makes it, for me, a far more enjoyable time to go back and listen to with more open ears.
13:07 This little change in the pattern of the song - seemingly random and not repeated - is one of my favorite parts of the track. It's one of those inflections that gives you something to latch onto. These sorts of accents to a song are the cumulative layers that make a band great. I love the added dimension.
Great song choices - not sure if I can forgive talking over that first guitar solo in To Bid You Farewell - possibly the most beautiful ever recorded imo (along with the chill solo in Bleak). Thanks for the good content!
DOUG. Now that you have done my all time favorite Dream Theater album and my all time favorite Opeth song, it is time you get to another Metal juggernaut. Devin Townsend - Deadhead, Live at Royal Albert Hall. It may not be the most musically crazy song, but the atmosphere and Devin's vocals (and the lyrics as well) are all an absolute journey. Everyone else that knows, knows. Do it for yourself and others that don't know, Doug!!!
There is a good connection to complete 1996 era - band Edge Of Sanity and album Crimson which consists of single title song almost 40min long. Mikael did some vocals there too. 😎
One amazing thing of Opeth, is the constant reinvention of their sound. When you listen to the early years, with the death metal vibe, and then with the melodic stuff polished by the years, ufff in my opinion is one of their signature. Thanks for the review and comments, keep me up to the end. *Still life, is my very favorite Opeth album, with Face of Melinda.
My favorite Daily Doug Opeth episode after your analysis of Harvest. When I heard on Sunday that you are reacting to these two songs, I knew that you would like The Wilde Flowers and I was curious about your reaction on I Bid You Farewell. However, I don't understand why your brother chose exactly these two but he might have his reasons. All in all, I hope such an Opeth TWOsday will ve repeated.
Still waiting for "Black Rose Immortal" by Opeth from "Morningrise album". Additionally, I think DJ Dan and Master Doug should try band called "Riverside" starting with either "Left out", "Second Life Syndrom" or "Escalator shrine". Cheers from Poland!
@@liquidshadows79 During recent show in Warsaw, the 20 aniversary Tour, the band gave us an outstanding and unique live performance of "Second Life Syndrom ". Although it is not published on YT. The Reality Dream DVD version would be worth to review here.
Riverside is definitely worth to review. My personal favourite is 'SONGS' album. Musicaly great and definitely the best if we talk about production. Additionaly lirycs is very actual (isolation and separation due to covid times). Cheers from Poland. P.S. I also have been on this Warsaw concert. Great experience.
Welcome to the world of music reaction videos. He is actually way easier to watch or listen to than most who constantly pause and talk about any random stuff. If it's not the first or best guitar solo in the world, it also doesn't always require full attention to get the gist of it (as guitar solos are played "by the gist of it").
His voice is also what I love about Mikael (along with his killer songwriting of course). He has great vibrato, a range I can sing in, and screams that I can sorta replicate. Edit: It’s funny that you say the Morningrise recording quality is good cuz Mikael hates that album’s sound quality.
One of my favorite Opeth songs. Brings back memories. If you like the way metal bands utilize acoustic guitar - Check out how Blind Guardian remixed "Mordred's Song" and "Bright eyes" into acoustic versions. Just amazing.

Awesome reaction (as always), Doug! Opeth are amazing! I guess you'll really like River from the album Pale Communion: great acoustic guitars, wonderful vocal harmonies and cool build up. For other great rock/metal songs with acoustic guitars I recommend Ark - Just a little and Angra - The Shadow Hunter.
Every time I hear an Opeth song new to me, I am freshly mind-blown. I didn't stumble across Opeth until 2017, and my first album was Sorceress, which was there latest. Not a bad song on the album, but as I delved deeper into their discography it became clear that these guys are absolutely brilliant. Unique as fuck and intensely diverse. Been around a minute, but hit the ground running. One of their songs start playing, that's it. I'm feel hypnotized and helpless to not listen to it. Read an article on them, and, apparently Mikael Åkerfeldt does not know music theory.
Wow. .I always need my Daily Doug fix and we today we have two Opeth tracks.superb..one of my most favourite bands. I just think Opeth are unique..I know some people just don't get them and can't get into them..I do feel they are missing out. Well done DJ Dan... Metallica and then Opeth brilliant. I really like the way you explain and dismember how the tracks are composed. Looking forward to your next reaction Doug. Take care and stay safe. From Liverpool UK. Peace 👍✌️🤘☮️
Love their earlier material…Orchid, My Arms, Your Hearse, Morningrise…Something about raw sound that just grabs me…Would like to see reaction to April Ethereal or When or Under The Weeping Moon…JINGER adopted much of their sound & structural designs…Tatiana copies Mikael’s vocal style & the band clearly incorporates much of Opeth’s sound into their material…
You definitely need to review Credence by Opeth. It's the song that Demon of the Fall starts playing into and, might I say, it is their acoustic masterpiece in my opinion. Especially when that tri-tone hits 😍
I still wish you'd check Storm Corrosion, being a project by Mikael (Opeth's vocals) and Steven Wilson (Porcupine Tree). Any album from the song is great. Drag Ropes for a more dissonant piece, the title track for the chill, and Ljudett Innan for... a different chill
Doug, I would love to hear your thoughts on Between The Buried And Me. They've recently put out the sequel to their legendary 2007 album Colors. My recommendation would be Ants of the Sky, a real fun rollercoaster. Note that Colors is meant to be listened as 1 full song, divided in 8 tracks (Ants of the Sky being the 5th track off of the album). This means the beginning and ending of the song is very abrupt.
I'd like to recommend the piece "The Battle of Chamdo" by Gorguts, it is a strings instrumental, and the song "Pleiades' Dust" by the same band for a friday episode
Yesss (making a victory fist), another Opeth double feature. #TheDailyDoug - I hope we get more like this. If I could dream I'd wish for a full album reaction and ESPECIALLY an analyis of their latest album "In Cauda Venenum" from 2019 since there's so much stuff on that album that I'd like to learn more about from someone who really knows what he's talking about. It's Mikael's most advanced and experimental writing out of all the modern era albums mixing so many styles: less 70'ies inspired prog rock, hints of psychedelic rock (pink floyd) and jazz elements, some dramatic classical inspired stuff and so on. I believe you'd really find something to bite into with that album. His vocals is at the highest level on the album. The album is slightly more dense to get into than the rest simply because of some songs with more experimental/complex time signatures. Cheers
Doug, thank you for the quality reviews you put out. It allows me to better connect with my favorite band. Would love it if you react to songs from their latest album: Continuum and All Things Will Pass.
Love this 'buy-one-get-one-free' special offer on the Helverings this week. Maybe your bro would do a spin-off series? Great choice, I'm now hooked on Opeth too.
I would love to hear your analysis of the Beach Boys' "Pet Sounds". The whole album and "God Only Knows" in particular. The album is collectively one of the best pieces of music ever written.
I have already mentioned it once, the album "In cauda venenum" from 2019, a masterpiece, choose what you want but it's really worth it. For me, the first two pieces in a row - (First is a tribute to the music of J. Carpenter, according to my amateur ear) Thx
I'm curious if your brother has tried to push you to listen to the song "Black Rose Immortal" from the same album as "To Bid You Farewell". I am pretty sure you would really appreciate it. It is a 20 minute song, but it really is pretty epic and amazing. It's comprised of so many different parts, and each one is unique. There is even a short acoustic section that they recorded, now I don't know if it was actually recorded beside a running stream or if the running stream was added in but it's unique sections like this that make the song "Black Rose Immortal" so very awesome.
A couple (well a bit more than couple) of suggestions: Villagers of Ioannina City (maybe Dance of Night or Millenium Blues), more Camel (Lady Fantasy, Stationary Traveller or really anything), Riverside (Second Life Syndrome or really anything for me), Comus (something from the First Utterance album), Ne Obliviscaris (Forget Not, And Plague Flowers the Kaleidoscope or maybe Eyrie?), Eloy (Poseidon's Creation or Reflections from the Sphere Beyond), Wilderun (Far From Where Dream Unfurl or The Tyranny of Imagination), Orphaned Land (Cave or maybe Halo Dies (The Wrath of God)). Would love some of them
Wonderful video Doug I enjoy it a lot, it would be great that you could make a video of the entire Opeth's My Arms, Your Hearse conceptual album, there is a very dark story on the lyrics from that album, and also a kind of two musical easter egg I wonder if you can find (sure you could). Thanks for your amazing content, keep doing it
That’s an interesting observation about his use of scales - I definitely think he writes largely intuitively, but he does seem to have a great natural ear for harmony. You did an early and a late song - perhaps a mid at some point? “Hope Leaves” from the Damnation record has some great examples of what you were talking about.
If you ever react to an entire Opeth album, absolutely do Damnation, it's a clean, easy-going album with acoustic guitars all over the place. Or at least do the song Windowpane from it!
The greatest description of opeth ever. "20 years later and he's still tormented" 😂
Sorrow
By different girls , but yes.
To Bid You Farewell has one of my all time favorite bass lines. The small touches in it, harmonics and slides, help add so much to the atmosphere. Plus... that entire song build up!
Powerful stuff when added to the lyrics. Absolute banger of an Opeth tune. 🤘
Jason you are subbed to Daily Doug too that's so cool! Spot on about To Bid You Farewell too. A perfect song
The bass in this, sounds like something I'd expect to hear on a Chick Corea album. Probably has a lot of to with the tone.
It started my love affair with Opeth.
The bass and guitar duet play is the best thing about the song. That fret less bass is so good.
I get excited everytime a metal band use fretless bass. Ever since i heard steve digiorgio battle it out with the guitar in "the philosopher" by Death

Has always been my favourite album of theirs, brother :,) absolutely transporting experience every time
Moonlapse Vertigo is my favorite song of all time. A timeless masterpiece, just like every Opeth song.
Doug, you have to make an extended play with the album Damnation by Opeth, there are acoustic guitars all over the place
PLEASE
Yesssss!!!!
I mean the best "ballads" are made by the heaviest metal bands and/or power metal bands
Deliverance / Damnation !! As they were meant to be, together
There are acoustic guitars in all their albums?
It's funny that the first verse on The Wilde Flower starts with "Sun hangs high I turn away" and on To Bid You Farewell it starts with "I am awaiting the sunrise"
Damn 🥴😂🤔
Good catch
This reminds me a line from Closure(Damnation) which goes like "In the rays of the sun, I am longing for the darkness." Man's obsessed with the sun.
Man.. It's been a while since I've last heard To Bid You Farewell. It's mind blowing how good it is...
Opeth - Dirge for November.
I know it is not the proggiest song, but I'm sure Doug will appreciate its dark beauty.
And the band Ne Obliviscaris deserves a listen too.
the live version is unbelievable
Ne Obliviscaris would be fun.
I highly also recommend these songs, great that you've suggested them!
An amazing song, but there is way too much double kick in that song for Doug to handle
before heritage this was the only song I could never appreciate can you explain what I am missing?
The music in Morningrise, especially the acoustic sections, give me a medieval vibe.
And the wild flowers gives me middle eastern vibes
@@mohameddarwish5272 And Charlatan gives me Bulgarian folk music, street accordion vibes.
I can see that
I think Still Life has those medieval acoustic vibes too

I'd like to recommend the piece "The Battle of Chamdo" by Gorguts, it is a strings instrumental, and the song "Pleiades' Dust" by the same band for a friday episode
Ayreon - The Human Equation album for the long episode!!!
Cheers
Doug is turning me on to Opeth! Loved both reaction and songs!
I’d recommend listening to the album damnation then, if you are hooked
Awesome Doug! More Opeth pleaseeeeeeee!!!? :D
Highly recommend 'The Moor' by Opeth. Massive song!
Nice reactions !.. nice pics !.. totally underrated songs!♥️🎵🤝 expecialy the first!.. I love both !
To Bid You Farewell is an amazing song, if a bit naive and amateurish. Still waiting for Windowpane...
I cant possibly imagine what youd find amatuerish or naive about it
Opeth! One of my very Favorite bands!!!
This two song is the kind of Opeth I like. Your bro Doug have great taste.
I'd love to see you cover "In The Shadow Of Our Pale Companion" by Agalloch
Doug + Opeth = instant like.
Doug's brother found Alice in Chains Down in a hole attempting to Snuff the rooster.
No Excuses!
Yeah, would have liked to have had Down in a Hole reviewed instead of Nutshell.
Or Rooster
@@metalmark1214 it's a start my friend will get him to do that one next time. My favorite Alice in Chains song will always be again.
Please do Death - Flesh and the Power It Holds
Thanks for mentioning the chord changes, I learn a lot by that.
The Dear Hunter “A Night on the Town” visual video IMO is def worth checking out, or “Mustard Gas”.
after this I had to subscribe :) Morningrise is in my top 3 albums list
I would love to hear your analysis of the Beach Boys' "Pet Sounds". The whole album and "God Only Knows" in particular. The album is collectively one of the best pieces of music ever written.
Yup
going on strong with drumming for 18 yrs, and morningrise is my favorite album to play along side
to bid you farewel is the reason why I became a drummer
God bless your brother! He and I have very similar taste in music
Morningrise is my VERY first Opeth album and fell I love with the band since then. Please review Black Rose Immortal. Thanks
I have already mentioned it once, the album "In cauda venenum" from 2019, a masterpiece, choose what you want but it's really worth it. For me, the first two pieces in a row - (First is a tribute to the music of J. Carpenter, according to my amateur ear)
Thx
Hi Doug,
Have you heard Conquistador by Procol Harem, Live at Edmonton?
Great tune, great version of it.
More opeth songs please :)
«Gracious living is felt whether it is created in small or big ways.», Emilie Barnes
Would love some of them
Opeth is instant listen!
More Opeth Tuesdays please
Old Opeth is so mesmerizing!!! Those atmospheres they created in their songs are like totally different worlds to be immersed in
Wonderful video Doug I enjoy it a lot, it would be great that you could make a video of the entire Opeth's My Arms, Your Hearse conceptual album, there is a very dark story on the lyrics from that album, and also a kind of two musical easter egg I wonder if you can find (sure you could).
Fantastic two songs….both on their own way
