    I love the parallels to the gemini missions. SpaceX has got to the point now where they've hit the ceiling of what standard commercial aerospace does (cargo, satellites). Now comes the testing and pushing the boundaries in ways that historically only governments have done. Testing a new EVA suit, proving communications networks. I wouldn't be surprised if Polaris 2 was a Crew Dragon docking with a Starship. All culminating in Polaris 3 with a manned mission aboard the modern successor to the Saturn V. All the proof of concept work will be done in these missions so they can proceed with Dear Moon, the HLS for NASA, and eventually Mars missions. It's been a tough few years, but stories like these make the future look bright.

      @lancelotlake7609 2 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      The more I think about it, the less I like the idea of launching humans from Earth inside of a Starship, with no independent and redundant abort system.
      The answer is now obvious. Launch a Starship, full of cargo instead of crew, and rendezvous with it in a Crew Dragon. This way Starship will not need to make a shallow ascent, or limit the maximum g-forces for humans. And, there is no need to worry if your methane engines will fire up quickly enough in an abort emergency.

    • @Parthanaux
      @Parthanaux 2 ปีที่แล้ว +11

      @@lancelotlake7609 I'm sure NASA would prefer this, and it would definitely make sense for HLS (they're only sending 4 or so), but adopting this method for regular use would defeat the purpose of starship. If you sent up all the passengers aboard crew dragon, you would need 10-15 launches to get the starship to capacity (remember it can carry around a hundred people). That also means 10-15 opportunities for something to go wrong during launch, during docking, etc.

    It sounds to me that mission 2 will involve starship. I would guess dragon docking with starship in orbit. This would provide tons of data, orbiting with starship, docking capabilities. This could also provide a potential way to return if there were an issue with starship while in orbit.

    • @kerbalengineer1243
      @kerbalengineer1243 2 ปีที่แล้ว +13

      At some point there will be criticism that the missions of "this billionaire astronaut" aren't as philanthropic as they sound because they "were subsidized by NASA" because NASA paid for the development of Dragon.
      Well, *duh!* One of NASA's missions is to lead the way in space exploration so others may follow. (Not to mention NASA got a bargain price for Dragon.)

    Jared clearly believes in Elon’s dream of a space faring human species and is willing to do what it takes to make it succeed. It’s great that someone as talented and committed and who’s already successful in his own right is on Elon’s team. Elon has proven that he is sincere about helping the people of Earth get past the great filter and that he really knows what he is talking about. If there’s any doubt about Elon’s capabilities, just look at reusable orbital class boosters and the electric vehicles revolution he kicked off.

    I miss your weekly update on OLF! Watching the return to space documentary; I know that voice, and then experiencing your enthusiasm again was wonderful. As I wrote this I noticed there's another reunion up, and I will watch it. But you no longer appear in my YT feed, because I do not watch content that does not exist.. IMHO, you where on an excellent trajectory, and lost manoeuvrability at some point.. Your long form content is, possibly unmatched, but your off the cuff commentary has that as well - you don't have to prepare for 3 months, to present something in Walter Cronkites essence; you are the WC of our time! Please give us your commentary :)

    The starlink testing is very interesting. Opportunity to offer private space stations communication services via lasers.
    There are a few gravity producing Van Braun type rotating space station projects in the pipeline.
    They could use starlink to communicate with earth. This will enable passengers to access the internet as if they were on at home.

    Bar none, Tim does the best interviews for fans of spaceflight in the business. I know you have expressed hesitancy in the past but I feel with all the changes in private spaceflight that the Everyday Astronaut might just get his chance to earn his wings if he chooses in the not so distant future. Great interview and Jared is the real deal. Going into Inspiration 4 I viewed him as a bit of a billionaire going on a joy ride but its clear he has a vision and much like Elon Musk, Mark Cuban and others that have parlayed their success into other areas that were their true passions it seems Jared is paving the way for a modern civilian core of astronauts.
