      For the fasting to work do you need to be awake for part of it? If i eat at 8pm latest then go to bed at 12 wake at 12 midday does that still count or will i not benefit fully despite fasting 16 hours?

      Dear Jason, you are so spot on about salt and diabetes. Only problem with this video is the assumption that cholesterol has anything to do with heart disease. All it it is doing is fixing the micro scarring, nicks and tears - which are like potholes - caused by seed oils, processed pretend foods, carb, alcohol, sugar overloads. The oldest people have the most cholesterol and it makes up over 80% of brain matter, being essential for the creation of the mylin sheath that insulates nueronal pathways, a lack it is linked epileptic fits and Alzheimers. But you probably know this.

    My triglycerides dropped from 258 to 153 in only 4 months on IF. My total cholesterol is now in normal range. I can’t wait to get bloodwork done again at my yearly physical to see how much further I can get the triglycerides down without statins. My doctor called me shocked asking how I did it. My A1C dropped to 5.1 too and I’m no longer pre-diabetic! I’ve been taking berberine with IF for 4 months and I’m down 42.9lbs. Dr Fung has literally changed my life and I’m excited to see how far I can go to get healthy again. I’d like to lose another 40lbs and I’m confident I can do it with IF and Dr Fungs videos for inspiration! THANK YOU DR FUNG ❤

    I am a medical doctor. Unfortunately at medical school we are not taught about the benefits of fasting. I have learnt lots from dr fung and dr Pradeep jamnadas on TH-cam and have started to recommend this treatment to my patients. I myself now do 16/18:8 intermittent fasting and a low carb diet and have experienced first hand significant health benefits. The problem is society go to the doctor and asked to be fixed. They don’t want to take responsibility for there own health.

      I can guarantee that NO ONE is going to do this…. Unless they know how good it is for them. I applaud you for informing your patients. I wish I could get other medical doctors to do the same. To paraphrase several medical professionals I know personally: “My patients are all too stupid. I’ll withhold this life saving information.”

    Agreed, I started taking fasting seriously two years ago after watching your video's. In addition to losing 5 stone (32.5Kg), over those two years, just before Christmas, I had my latest 6-month Cholesterol check, which has traditionally been followed by an instruction to do more about my high cholesterol and come back in 6 months. Not this time, they said "you're good now, let's check again in 3 years time. I just turned 60 by the way so fasting can help at any age.

      I get a health check for work every year and every year, no matter what I've weighed, my cholesterol has been high. I've been fasting for 3 months and just got checked. My cholesterol numbers are 60 points better than any other year, even the year I weighed 15 lbs. Less than this year. I don't know why it works, but it does.

      The weight loss is great but the health benefits are amazing!
      Some of the many benefits of fasting on the immune system, blood pressure, blood sugar and anti-aging, all backed up by clinical data:
      Thymus stem cells are regenerated, which suppresses aging and renews the immune system.
      Fasting stimulates phagocytosis, the ingestion of bacteria and viruses by the immune system.
      Blood pressure is quickly and dramatically lowered, which is very important for a good outcome with the current pandemic.
      Fasting increases nitric oxide, which has manifold postive effects like reducing arterial plaque.
      Weight loss from fasting only loses10% lean tissue and 90% fat compared to the typical 25% lean tissue and 75% fat lost when calorically restricting for long periods.
      Blood clotting is reduced and blood clots and arterial plaque are reabsorbed into the body.
      Vitamin D plasma levels are increased, and vitamin D in turn increases autophagy!
      Blood sugar and insulin are lowered, allowing white blood cells to move more freely throughout the body and do their job. Ideal blood sugar is around 80.       The hormone Leptin is an immunomodulator that keeps the body from attacking itself and obesity causes leptin resistance. Fasting very quickly reduces leptin resistance and leptin levels and one day of fasting can cut your leptin levels in half and gets your immune system working properly again!
      When you move out of MTOR your body shuts down the building blocks of the cell which are used to produce organelles and proteins. This means the mechanisms needed by viruses to replicate are by and large unavailable when you are in a deeply fasted state.
      It stimulates the AMPK complex and activates autophagy. Autophagy (literally self eating) will cause cells to recycle foreign matter such as viruses and kill cancerous and senescent cells. AMPK does many helpful things in the body including activating the body's antioxidant defenses.

      Your body releases interferon which is also triggered by the body during viral attacks to shut down the replication ability of the surrounding cells and stop infections.
      After 72 hours or more fasted, your body actually recycles large numbers of immune bodies and creates new ones, rejuvenating your entire system.
      When you fast, this stimulates apoptosis in senescent or genetically damaged cells. This kills these cells off completely. Senescent cells are responsible for the effects of aging and are the root cause of the development of cancer. If it were possible to destroy them all it would completely stop aging and cancer. That is not possible but fasting can help limit these effects by killing off many of the affected cells and limiting the future effects of aging.
      Fasting also releases BDNF and NGF in the blood which stimulates new nerve and brain cell growth, helping a great deal with diseases like MS, peripheral neuropathy and Alzheimers.
      In fact, the biochemical precursor to BDNF is beta-hydroxybutyrate, which is the same ketone the body produces to nourish the brain while fasting.

      Dieters losing weight through intermittent fasting show greater reduction in waist size and increase in insulin sensitivity for the same weight lost and alternate day fasters were shown to lose fat while gaining muscle at the same time over a six month period.
      Fasting has been shown to increase bone marrow volume by 10% and levels of carnosine in the body in as little as a few weeks.
      Fasts of several days will not affect short term female fertility and may increase long term fertility especially in women with PCOS.
      Fasting also increases telomere length, negating some of the effects of aging at a cellular level.
      Eating one meal a day can bring most of these benefits to a lesser degree, and adding a few entire days off from eating per week will have even more effect especially when starting to feel poorly.
      Exogenous ketones can aid with fasting, making it easier in healthy people and allowing some people with specific issues to fast in spite of them without worrying as much about hypoglycemia.
      Children, pregnant or nursing women should not fast for periods longer than 16 hours. People with pancreatic tumors or certain forms of hypoglycemia generally cannot fast at all. Type 1 diabetics can also fast but it is more complicated and should be approached with caution as it could lead to ketoacidosis. Those with Addison's disease may also be unable to fast without liberal use of exogenous ketones, depending on severity. If you experience extreme symptoms of some kind, especially dizziness then simply break the fast and seek advice.

    Thanks Dr. Fung. You have changed my life. I fast 21 hours per day and have a 3 hour feeding. Pretty much OMAD plus a snack. I eat keto no processed food. I am 50 and I have lost 80 pounds so far. my BP is normal and my Blood work looks great. I have never felt better.

      Good on you! And the more you fast the easier it is! Most days I am not remotely hungry for at least 20 hours! (And I don't even do full-on Keto!😉) I really don't need to lose much weight, maybe around 5 or 10 pounds at most, but I fast for the enormous Health Benefits!!🙌 YAY!!😎

      I used to do mostly 16-8 naturally (not forcing myself 😅) and now I just went straight to omad with a good healthy meal (meat/eggs and salad ) omad is the best!! Do you exercise?

    I was having problems losing weight so I instituted intermittent fasting. I lost to a certain level and just stopped. I couldn't figure out why. I have watched a ton of these videos and have finally come to the same conclusions that Mr. Fung has been talking about. I kept increasing my fasting periods and settled on 48 hours two times a week! I still gained back to the same weight as I started the previous fast. Well I realized from taking my blood sugar and ketones that my ketones would go low and glucose would go high... Well, a light finally went on. I decided on 3 specific times that I would eat on my non-fasting days and zero snacks in between and wow, everything normalized and I've lost close to 15 pounds in the past 3 weeks. My blood sugars stay low and ketones stay up!! I have come to the realization that, snacks, no matter if they are healthy or not, keep glucose elevated. To get glucose down and ketones up one needs to not eat snacks at all. At least for me. This is my experience and I just wish I had figured it out a long time ago!!! I firmly believe that it's not just sugar or just insulin, but lowering sugar raises ketones and lowers insulin they all work together to help or hinder. I'm no doctor, but once I took that into account my weight loss has been more consistent.
    Just an aside, I do resistance training 4 times a week. I really do not think that has anything to do with my weight loss or blood numbers as I have been weight training for the past 7 years.
    Thanks to Mr. Fung and others, my blood pressure has gone down to normal ranges and I have lowered my blood sugar to normal for a non-T2D (I have T2D), and I'm about 15 more pounds from my goal weight. Oh yeah, I had been diagnosed with hypertension way back in 1986, and now it's finally normal without meds!!!

    After years of taking a statin, I continuously had higher cholesterol numbers, low "bad" LDL and higher triglycerides. After a year of IF and "modified" keto, all my blood labs show normal readings. I'm a believer.

    3 years ago my weight had ballooned to 218 pounds. At 5'8 that is quite heavy even though I am quite muscular.
    My blood pressure was bordering on dangerous, my cholesterol was high and my doctor was really starting to push the meds. I had tried everything, juicing, more salads, supplements etc. and I am a naturally very active person. I finally tried Keto and my weight dropped like a stone. I was in 188 in about 10 weeks. At some point over those weeks I also added intermittent fasting after reading the Obesity Code.
    I moderated my diet to low carb rather than strictly keto and continued on until I saw my Dr. again about 6 months later. My LDL had dropped 20%! My blood pressure was optimal! My doctor was stunned!
    I have kept 20 of the 30 lost pounds off and hopefully Ontario comes out of lockdown at some point so I can check my progress again.

    I was in a traumatic environment that almost killed me. Heart palpitations has a big indicator. Left the environment, did lots of health and exercise changes. Dr's said i was stressed. I was but not mentaly. They tried to give me anti-depresant drugs. I said that's not the problem. Cardiologist said I'm fine. Heart monotor said it was a premature beat. It was scary. I've had it every since intermittentaly. 1 per week to 1 per day. It varied.
    Went one meal a day for the past two weeks. Lots of fat and low carb. Lots of meat. It has gone away for these two weeks.

    Im 19 and weigh 190 pounds. I've been recommended all forms of "FAD DIETS" by people around me but I was always against all of those because I didn't wanna develop eating disorders just to look good. But finally I found just the thing that is not detrimental to my health and I find doable. I CAN do it for THE REST OF MY LIFE!!!All thanks to you , Dr. Fung. Its just been 2 weeks and I feel so good. I feel more energetic and focused. I am able to study with better concentration. I don't go out of breath anymore while walking(For an hour!). All thanks to you. THANKYOU DR. FUNG. Even I aspire to be as good of a doctor as you are and help people both directly and indirectly. Thankyou so much! ☺️❤️

    I'm 47 and was 290 lbs ...feeling like I am 67 I discovered fasting and am in week 5 of OMAD . I've lost 18 lbs and have recently started cutting my calories in the one meal. My sleep has gotten better. My joint pain has stopped. My food budget has been cut dramatically as my wife is doing 16 and 8 with 2 meals. I am eating once. Fasting has been the "miracle pill" everyone wished existed and its better then FREE.... it pays you to do it. My goal is 225 lbs at ( 6ft 5in). Once there I will start eating two meals in an 18 and 6 lifestyle. I can never go back to the way I was.

      Been doing 16/8 for 2 months and have lost about 4 lbs - hubby has lost about 6 BUT my weight was going UP and UP and nothing was stopping it until now. Yes, 100% agree, this seems to be the 'miracle pill' ! I was ALWAYS hungry before, now I feel satiated after meals, our food bill is down too, and I still have a glass or 2 of wine at the end of the day, and I STILL lost weight. Like you, I feel I can do this forever, despite thinking I'd be feral without breakfast. Seriously, it does feel like a miracle. I'll bet you feel a big difference after 30 lbs - even the 4 lbs lost have made a difference to me. Cheers and best wishes for your ongoing success!

    I've experienced this first hand .. total cholesterol went from 240 to 204 and LDL from 143 to 113.. prediabetic to normal hemoglobin and sugar.. along with the fast I was also doing HIIT cardio and moderate strength training just before my eating window. I included healthy fats such as half an avocado and soluble fiber such cucumbers in my DAILY diet. These results were achieved in 6 months 16-8 fasting.

      IMHO, you don't even need HIIT cardio, moderate cardio OR LISS (low-intensity steady state training), like rucking, before the eating window will work as well.

    I do a 36 hour fast every week. My doctor said he wishes all his patients had blood chemistry like mine.

      I have yet to get my blood tested out by my doctors but starting about 5 months ago I've started to do 36-48 hour fasts every week as well, and stay within 18:6 for the other days, and I feel so much better. I am excited to see what my blood will show one I do see the doctor next.

      We didn't get into anything like that. He didn't know what to think when I told him I fasted. It's something they never deal with. Fasting is like alternative medicine. They want to be seen as mainstream, etc. Anyway, if everyone fasted the incidence of disease would plummet and most of them would be out of work.

    Thanks to Dr Fung, I got introduced to intermittent fasting and started it last Oct. 2021. In three months, when I had my blood tests done in December, my A1C is down to 6.2, cholesterol and triglycerides are all within normal ranges. Working with my PCP, I’m off metformin (diabetes meds) and we have reduced in half my cholesterol meds . In three months time, I’ll have my blood tests again and I have no doubt that I can continue not taking diabetes meds and hopefully, not take cholesterol meds as well. If the March 2022 bloodwork proves otherwise, I’ll just be back to my regular meds. I am very certain that I won’t. Intermittent fasting is the best advice to reverse diabetes and improve cholesterol, triglycerides, blood pressure, and good sleep

I recently before I started watching your videos had my blook work done on my annual physical. I look forward to seeing the great progress I can make over the year before my next yearly physical.       I eat 1 meal a day all fresh vegetables at 6 in the evening since 1-1-2022 and lost 12 pounds today is January 16-2022 😊👍🏻

      Hi Jessica, this is Linda again, so happy see your post again. I'm so happy for you, I saw your post about loose 90 pounds back a few months ago, also you were so kindly answering all the questions people asking you, that really inspired me to start my weight loss Journey, with the help of Dr. Fung's and other doctors' channels, I've lost 36 pounds so far, 20 pounds more to go. At the time that I lost 25 pounds, I did my blood work, all of irregularities got back to normal, I dropped off one blood pressure medicine. Thank you very much!

      @@gracetoglory5020 Hi! I gave up ALL refined carbs and sugars and increased natural fats. I was pretty aggressive because I really wanted to get the weight off so I did one meal a day for four days then skipped the fifth day entirely (a 48hr fast). I did that for many months with no problems and the weight just kept falling off. Now since the beginning of the year I still do OMAD and eat low carb high fat but now I'm only skipping one day a week entirely...I think I'm still losing tho so I'll have to see how it goes... thanks for asking and best of luck to you!🙏

    Thank you Dr Fung and I can anecdotally speak to this as intermittent fasting 17:7 over about 12 months back in 2018 reduced my bad cholesterol and triglycerides levels by approx 35% per my blood panels at dr appointments. Press on good sir

    *Hi Doc i just wanted to share my exp. I have been doing IF for 3 years ( 18:6) without fail i have lost 70lbs and i m happy however 3 months back i got my blood work done and i was shocked to learn my cholesterol touch the roof. I kept thinking what could be the reason as i m very cautious of what i eat(nothing fried) then i realised i eat 3 eggs each day 5 days a week with my salad . So i reduced my egg intake to almost 75% and got my blood work done and boom its back to a normal reading. So i want everyone to understand though we are religiously fasting eating the wrong food might sure cause harm.and again i cant thank you enough for all your efforts*

      Cholesterol means little, and nothing for women. Do not even worry about it, mainstream doctors are moronic automatons.

      I have read that having a cholesterol test during a longer fast gives a high reading, and it’s best to decrease fasting window to 14 or 13 hours for 4 days before testing.

    I'm intermittent fasting (primarily OMAD or 2MAD at most a feeding window of 6 hours).
    In addition to low refined carbohydrate, drastically if not go almost completely eliminated sugar, no alcohol, never smoked.
    I am down from 330 to 280 in two and a half months. (Down from 350 at my heaviest)
    I fully intend to get down to 225.

    I just got blood testing which I hadn’t done in 3 years, with the last year doing IF and mostly keto diet and substantial reduction of carbs intake.

    Great video again. I would love if you could talk about LDL and how it may go up when intermittent fasting and low carb. A more extensive lipid panel with your doctor will show better results.

      I would like Dr Fung to make a video about why LDL rises on fasts. My small particle LDL is up as well as ApoB after 6 mos of 16:8 with several 3 day fasts. I eat mainly plant based, EVOO, some salmon, no gluten or dairy.

    It's great that fasting fits into my daily schedule. I skip breakfast because too busy getting ready for work. At 10am eat brunch then 2 hours later lunch then 2 hours later dinner or skip dinner altogether.. so, between 10am and 6pm, I eat. After 6pm, fast until next 10am
