In this video going over the East Blue Saga I will be talking about the following characters:
    Monkey D. Luffy
    Sanji
    Roronoa Zoro
    Captain Kuro
    Usopp
    Nami
    Buggy
    Dragon
    Captain Smokes

But the fact that he pushes through that to go on this grand adventure with people who are near-superhuman shows that he is actually *incredibly* brave. He is the everyman and shows how goals and drive and pursuing aspirations are the core of One Piece's story and world.

The mangaka Eiichiro Oda puts insane details in his manga. Just mentioning a few: every time the moon is shown in a panel, the progression of the moonphases is actually consistent across the whole story. The made-up clothing brands that appear during the story actually have their own distinguishable style. All characters grow aesthetically, but very gradually: if you pay attention to Luffy's shape saga by saga he gets just slightly more muscular every time. The story of all secondary characters progresses offscreen. Each single character (even the most marginal ones) actually have a backstory which affects their appearance.

I always took that Kurina's death was purposfully random and sudden and awful to emphasize the specific trauma that Zoro was put through. Kurina specifically didn't have a death that mattered. She was alive, and then she was dead, and it was no one's fault. That's the kind of thing that makes you deeply question the world you live in.
The reason that Zoro instantly chooses a life goal that's concrete but extrenely difficult is to give himself a reason to devote his entire life to one thing and one thing only. That way he doesn't have to focus on the grief and anger and emptiness that comes from processing the sudden death of a person he valued very highly.
That's where he earns his moniker "the demon". That's the alternate persona he created so he didn't have to be the scared, sad little boy that still grieves and carries his friend. The person he feels he needs to become in order to be the greatest swordsman.

One of my favorite underappreciated character developements in these early chapters is Zoro's drastic change in demeanor. He goes from a confident but arrogant guy with no worries to a much more serious and careful man. We see Zoro laugh all the time before his fight with Mihawk, he was full of this lighthearted spirit and confidance that he will defeat anyone that comes his way because he will be the greatest swordsman. Mihawk was the wake up call that reminded him that the future he wants won't just fall into his hands. Now he no longer belly laughs, he feels this pressure and the weight of what he has set out to do. From that day forward all we see Zoro doing is training and sleeping - doing nothing else but making sure he can win that next fight. It makes you think, how is it effecting him behind that stoic face?

I think getting overhyped with One Piece is worse than having negative impressions of the story before even reading it, because at least with the latter your mind could still be changed by the story itself, but when you're overhyped with the series I think it just cheapens your first experience with the story overall. "Usopp feels like the Krillin of the crew" well fun fact, they share the same english voice actor, Sonny Strait. He's said the voice of Usopp is "like Krillin with a hitch".
And some quick pronunciation notes (no shame in this, everyone gets someone's name wrong early on):
    - Usopp is said without the long U or "you" sound that you're putting at the front. The U at the front is the same U sound as what's in Luffy's name. To put it phonetically, you're saying "You-sopp", take out the y and say it more like "Oo-sopp", with that double-O sounding like it does in words like pool, tool, gloom, etc.
    - Sanji doesn't rhyme with sandy. That A sound is more of an "Ah" sound like when you have to open wide and say ahhhh. I would say pronounce it like in the word aunt, but I know some people say that like ant. So if that's you, say it like the other way. So basically it rhymes with "On G" (just put an S sound at the start)
    - On Roguetown/Loguetown. Both are honestly equally as valid, Roguetown is fitting in that it's a big pirate town, town of rogues, makes sense. But the Loguetown version/interpretation is more drawn from the town's moniker of "the town of the beginning and the end" as in proLOGUE and epiLOGUE. And so yeah, Loguetown is then pronounced "log-town". And as I'm sure you've probably had explained to you before, in Japanese L and R are the same exact sound, so it's down to context which is more fitting when moving to English. There have been many localizations of One Piece that have named Luffy Ruffy because of this, for instance. And there are more L/R fun times to come, don't worry too much about it, pretty much no matter what you decide on there will be half the fanbase telling you it's the other.

Honestly I feel like people who haven't watched/read op have the wrong idea about it mostly because of it's animation style. Like yeah op is to a degree goofy and funny, but it is so much more if you go beyond the surface, lots of dark themes, political talking, a very complex plot, a big vast fantasy world that has anything one can desire, and sure at the end it is still a very optimistic story but not in a careless way but more in like an empowering way to see the world in a positive light.

The continuity of character presence does significantly add to the believability of an otherwise increasingly absurd world. And what's more is that Oda is a master at recontextualizing characters and events. Just when you think you have someone figured out, you might see a totally new side of them (in just about the best way possible).

The one place is called Loguetown. You can see a sign in chapter 96 that's in plain English instead of katakana like all the spoken instances of it, when the Strawhats get there.
It's just 4kids and Viz that translated it as Roguetown, which I could _maybe_ see the reasoning behind if that sign wasn't there, as it is kind of a town of rogues _I guess_ (and Lo and Ro are the same in katakana).
But no Loguetown is the one Oda wrote it as, and it really works better too. It's called "the town of the beginning and the end", the town of the proLOGUE and the epiLOGUE. It was the start and the end of the pirate king's life, and it's also where the prologue of One Piece ends.

It's always so wonderful to see someone new discover One Piece. Welcome to the fandom!!
Oda is a master of character design, and even this early on he has created so many distinct characters. I've reread the series a couple of times, but even the first time around I usually remembered characters that I hadn't seen for hundreds of chapters (and for several years in real time).

I watched another guy reading through it all (Totally not Mark) from episode one and that's was a journey for everyone. I'm looking for something similar here. The era of the daring ones comes with an unstoppable swell!

Another thing I like about One Piece is that every named character had a clear background about what they were doing before they appeared in the show, like the crew itself, it wasn't like Luffy was just going around, saw a random person walking on the street beat up a bad guy and be like "Okay, that guy is gonna be the next crew memeber!" No, everyone on the crew had a clear routine before joining
Luffy - Was preparing himself for his pirate voyage living in a mostly peaceful village, ocassionaly being visited by Shanks, who was probably telling him some pirate stories
Zoro - Was traveling the sea trying to hone his skills, searching for the strongest swordsmen to defeat, hunting pirates for a living
Nami - Also traveling the sea, however she was trying to steal all the pirate riches, so she can pay off an insane sum of money Arlong wants, to buy the island back, where she has a sister and a home
Usopp - After the passing of his mother, he spent most his days running away from angry villagers for some excitement, been playing with the town children and been keeping a company to the sick Kaya, while wishing to someday go out to sea and become a real pirate
Sanji - Before joining he's been a cook at a famous floating restaurant, which he called a home and despite always calling all his co-workers and his boss names, he felt a great gratitude towards them all, for taking him in and giving him a home.
The same goes for the villains too, like they haven't just appeared out of nowhere
Buggy used to be part of a pirate group alongside with Shanks, before splitting off and forming his own group
Alvida used to be a stereotypical pirate before joining Buggy's crew, she used to just plunder random ships and stealing from people
    Etc etc.

Most people and nearly all other translations think it's Loguetown because it derives from "prologue" and "epilogue". The english manga translation (but not the anime besides the weird 4kids version) simply chose to go with the "R" instead of "L" for Roguetown.

So happy to see you start One Piece!
Just so you'll know, in Japanese the sound for L and R is the same one, which is why there is some confusion about the names of different characters & places.
Zoro is pronounced with an R as his name is a reference to the famous swordsman Zorro.
Louge Town is pronounced with an L as it is a pun. Signifying both the epilouge of the East Blue, and the Prolouge of the actual Story at the Grand Line.
