- After Jurgen Klopp and Liverpool’s comments about Atlético Madrid’s tactics and celebrations during their 1-0 win vs. Liverpool in the UEFA Champions League round of 16 first leg, ESPN FC’s Alejandro Moreno, Craig Burley, Dan Thomas and Frank Leboeuf debate whether Liverpool’s complaints are valid. Moreno thinks Liverpool should be more concerned about advancing to the next round than how Atleti celebrated winning the first match, but still favours the Red’s to win after the second leg at Anfield.

The truth painful truth was we played extremely bad tonight, conceded a goal which we would not concede on another day. This was expected athletico but we should have been better. u cant really blame the ref the whole time athletico also had some decisions gone against them as well. Has to be our worst performance this season. We played better than this even at the napoli game even though we lost 2-0. Well we always do have Shitty away form in Europe.
Lets hope the lads step up at anfield.

I don't think there was a tactical problem, Liverpool has been winning this year without playing well in a lot of matches. They had the bad luck to play bad vs a team that gave them the ball and no space to run.

Most liverpool fans are happy to admit the main 2 factors of this game: athletico had excellent defensive especially with positioning and liverpool played poorly.
The main complaints are it isnt fun to watch a team that dives as frequently as athletico did especially when the referee falls for it every time. I found the officiating very frustrating as even the commentators almost every "foul" committed by liverpool they were like "yeah I'm not sure how at all that is a foul" meanwhile the ox made a huge run about to shoot from the 18 year line (which he does a good job of usually) and was absolutely swept by the defender and the ref waved it off.
I think it's just athleticos strong defensive style is frustrating to play against and then add in this bad diving with bad officiating it's a big mix for frustrating fans.

They played cowardly and just held the game, and kept every player on defense waiting for a counterattack opportunity. Beyond the fact that it's a really coward strategy, this playing style is exactly what is holding back Atlético's potential right now (along with poor forms of some players), as the team is really not playing well, and it has no place in football anymore and only maybe gets you far on leagues, and with much luck on knockout tournaments sometimes, as nowadays offensive teams eventually break your defensive structure 95% of the times, and in cups you have little time and can't keep yourself on top by just stacking up 1x0 wins and draws. I'm actually an Everton supporter, and I'm just speaking up because people condoning Atlético's strategy (probably just because they hate Liverpool) is really rage-inducing

The premier league is overrated! This is how football should be played, atletico knows they have a not as good team as liverpool, so they have to be cynical in order to win. I have never understood the kind of football that is played in the premier league, where every "small" team goes in without respecting the stronger team and they play open field. In spanish and italian football smaller teams respect the bigger team, they know that if they play all in they would 9 out of 10 times lose cos the bigger aka richer team just has the resources to get the better players, so they do whatever is possible to get a positive score.
Other top teams in serie a or la liga are used ot this, cos they play vs park the buss (every breath puts me to the groud) teams week in week out.

I don’t think there’s a single Liverpool fan that feels as though Atletico playing extremely defensive was a surprise or was unfair in some way. The fair complaints are that the Atletico players were diving everywhere and the ref bought it every time and then there were blatant fouls on Liverpool players which the ref just ignored. He got nearly every little call wrong even a couple of corners and giving a throw in to Atleti just before the goal when it quite clearly deflected off Morata’s head
I find diving to be very subjective, a foul is a foul no matter how many rolls a person does after the contact.

As a Liverpool fan, I find it annoying and irritating sometimes when some Liverpool fans were criticising how Atletico celebrated, we need to realise we are a club every single team in the world wanna beat. When someone does it of course they'd celebrate a little bit more than usual. And for the tactics, well its absolutely annoying to see, but it is what it is. You have to get on with it and come up with a way to win it, and not whinge about it. I expect them to win it at Anfield, but they'd need to be way better than last game which was shockingly pathetic.

VAR is very limited in what it can get involved with. I believe (dont quote me on this) it is only plays leading to goals, penalties, and red card offenses.
The dives were in open field not leading to red cards and their goal had a missed call in the lead up where the ball went out for lfc throw but was given to athletico for some reason then crossed in and out for corner which they scored from. VAR as far as I know cannot check throw in decisions which is fair enough so it was bad decision from the linesman but these things happen, it's unfortunate but ultimately liverpool should have defended the corner much better than they did. Simple as that.
I just hope we win at Anfield. I will not be happy with the PL title if we get knockout the Champions League early
