Was a mechanic for 10 years, spent 5 of them working for Ford. Absolutely loved doing these jobs when I was left alone to do them. Never got daring enough to pull the cab on an Expedition myself, but I pulled F-150 cabs every chance I had. And this is one of the jobs that actually makes me miss being a mechanic. But, I like my Trains now.

Bought my 2018 from a shady dealer in Fon du lac Wi and luckily under warranty which needed this repair ( They knew damn well this was a problem) but sold it to me anyway. Knock on wood it’s still good.
My 2019 eco boost has been doing this rattle since it was new. I mentioned it to the dealer a couple of times and they just acted as though it was the first time they’d ever heard of it and had no idea what it could be. I started just holding the gas peddle to the floor for a couple seconds when cold starting so the engine cranks a few times before firing up and has a chance to built some oil pressure. It’s now off warranty so I’m just hoping to sell it before something fails.
Yet my cousin's 17 has little over 200k. Been making the noise since around 60k. So if it's out of warranty is it really worth spending the money to replace them. To me that would be no does not seem to actually harm anything.
For me the Toyota Tundra and the Toyota Sequoia with the 5.7L I-Force V8 is definitely the best vehicle to have and it'll outlast any Ecoboost vehicle with ease.
Agreed, but the payload on the Tundras is a joke. I'd love to get one. They hover at around 1300lbs per the sticker. 8000lbs trailer, looking at 1200lbs tongue weight (at the top end of the 15% recommendation). Add a 75lb weight distribution hitch. You need to find someone that weighs 25lbs to drive it. and have no other gear. :( I wish Toyota did better with that.

I go to the Ford parts desk and they pull up what I have is 2 large chains. So yes please please order OEM when you do phaser repairs. According to Ford, up to 6/2017 had the 4 chains does this seem right to you?
I bought a 2017 3.5 EB back in May (6 months ago). Sure enough, I started it up last weekend and got the dreaded rattle. It seems like, since it's a known issue, Ford would step up and cover the full cost as a warranty recall. These trucks aren't cheap and we're expected to pay thousands of dollars to repair a design flaw that they've known was a problem for several years. As much as I love my truck, it may very well be the last F150 I buy. Maybe I should've bought the 5.0 L Coyote like I started to, who knows.
My coworker just got a brand new f150 with 2.7. Brand new vehicle - phasers rattle at cold start. Waiting for new phasers under warranty. Funny that for this 2.7 he traded in his 3.5 he bought also new in May of 2023. On that one cam followers had been eaten after a few months of ownership. “Ford making his customers eat the cost of bad parts” indeed. If he did not work for Ford he’d probably never buy another one again. Wonder how long before our plant parking lot start filling up with Tundras.
I have a 2018 and it makes that noise and it got stuck at start up (like when you turn the ignition & hold it) I’v dealt with the local Ford dealer a few times and even forced them to change out the Vacuum solenoid valve & Check valve for the IWE vacuum lines at my cost because of the scraping sound it would make once in a while when I turned left due to the 4wd hubs trying to engage or ??? But whatever it did fix. That sound started again this week so I bought the parts and changed them myself (literally a 5 minute job) and $100 in parts. Now I have to deal with this other issue, I’m an HVAC tech and like fixing things and understand design flaws and I fix them on HVAC systems everyday. I’ve been told that that the screeching sound and the rattle from the engine will not damage anything, I’m an older dude & the first thing I tech new techs is to troubleshoot with their ears and that metal to metal noise is NEVER GOOD lol😂. The way Ford is dealing with these issues is unacceptable and is making me think I’m just better off with a new GMC truck. I’m on my 6th Ford from the same dealer.
I recently bought a used 2017 from a dealer. Have a warranty covering the parts associated with the cam phaser issues. However, would they replace if no codes have been thrown? The rattle is even embarrassing in public.
Thanks a lot for these videos. What is the new part number? You said it started with an M. Is it still a factory recall or should I look to come out of pocket for this fix?
I know old videos just curious if u have done some new style phaser replacements yet ?? I’m doing one rn I can tell the truck has been torn down before and had em replaced at some point
With all of the problems the 3.5 ecoboost is having, is it possible to come up with a complete list of must do reliable enhancements to put on the engine. It appears most of the issues that ecoboost is having are very costly in terms of maintenance hours. Lifting the cab away seems excessive maintenance for just one issue, but very practical to just do all of them at once. In fact, I would like to see it as a package deal. As of now, I am looking to just replace my engine with a new one that will have as much done to it that will make the engine last easily 400k miles or longer.
Hey Mason I'm subscribed to your videos and I value your opinion. I would like to know what truck ford sells that you would say is the most bulletproof (least amount of problems) I personally own a 2016 f150 with 3.5 ecoboost. Only major problem I fixed myself was exhaust manifold leaks and catalytic converter.
I have a 2019 F150 getting tbis job done right now at 95K miles. If i replace all phasers, timing chains and tensioners how long do i got before ill need to do this again? $3,500 ouch
Thanks for another excellent video. My 2017 F150 3.5 ecoboost (Now at 62,000 miles )and i have been dealing with this problem for over 3 years. The Cam phasers have been replaced 4 times . the first two times they used the old part numbers HL3Z, then the third time they used the new ML3Z part. Each time the problem continued not only at cold start but even when the engine was warm. At times the engine sounded like it was going to blow apart. Most recently (Sept) they put in the 4th set of cam phasers using the old part number HL3Z. At first the noise was still there but not as bad and now for the last two weeks the engine is quiet for the first time in 3 years, i am not that confident that the problem has been permanently fixed and suppose that any day now it will start making that awful noise again
My 2017 is going under the knife on 2/23 I have been assured the new parts are going to be installed. I love the truck but I didn't buy a diesel ! Best of luck to all in phaser land and Merry Christmas!
And that the EXTREMELY loud knocking for 1-2 seconds right at startup? after it's competlely cold, or are you talking about another rattle like turbo waste gate?

Thanks for your awesome videos, Mason! I have a question for you: How long would you think it should take for a dealership shop to get parts in to do a cam phaser repair on a 2018 F150? This would be in north Alabama. I ask, because I am currently in week 5 of waiting for parts to arrive.
I just purchased a used expedition in north Alabama. It had the cam phaser issue. Im taking it to the dealership tomorrow. I would think they would be keeping an inventory on these since it’s a very common issue. But who knows with todays post Covid shipping.
Hey I have a 19 raptor and the cam phaser are scheduled are getting replaced what other parts would you recommend to change while it open. I heard recommend to change oil pump, timing chain and tensioner anything else would you change. What are those part numbers of other parts you would change thanks
Do you know if all dealer service departments are using the newer phasers for the replacement? My 2020 is in the shop for a knocking noise coming from the drivers side phasers. I’m afraid they’ll put the same old parts in it.
Hey Mason, I have a '18 EB with 130k miles and was wondering if you have a video of the general steps for doing this phaser job for us poor people that can't really afford $4-$6000? Great videos.
I missed the last part did you say GM's have less problems than fords? It's weird you would think Ford would do a recall with so many people having this problem, and them discontinuing those particular cam phasers. I have a 2019 Expedition and I'm having the same problem with the cam phasers rattling noise. Just curious, do you know how much your dealership charges to change all 4 cam phasers.
Can onyone tell me the TSB showing this part is recommended? My truck is at the dealer right now (2018 Expedition) getting phasers and they refude to use the M part number because the Ford TSB does not recommend it per the 2023 TSB. Are all of the H part numbers the bad design?
I have a question for you I just bought a 2018 Ford expedition limited about 6 months ago with 63,000 miles on it. I didn’t know about this rattle but I bought it from my local ford and they said the rattle was nothing big to worry but now 6 months latter my expedition is in the shop and they are saying I need to replace them. How is this not covered when they new it had the rattle ?
everytime it does it it's damaging your cams, timing chains, tensions, timing chain sliders. which will eventually lead to a constant knocking at idle and eventually catastrophic damage

These trucks aren't cheap and we're expected to pay thousands of dollars to repair a design flaw that they've known was a problem for several years. As much as I love my truck, it may very well be the last F150 I buy. Maybe I should've bought the 5.0 L Coyote like I started to, who knows.
5.0 has severe oil consumption issues so who knows
Mason - where is your shop...I'd like to get you to change my phasers.
Man my 11 5.0 with over 200k miles stills purrs like a kitten 🐺
I have a 1st gen 3.5. 2012 f150.
Will these new parts work for my engine? If not is there a phaser designed that has fixed the issues for the 1st gen?
Make a video of your tool box tour I'm interested in seeing you set up
Will do
Great info thanks for sharing ✌
the question is...What happens if you dont fix it? Will it eventually break and cause catastrophic failure or not?
Some people say they never fixed it and they don’t have any problems.
🤔
So the big question would be
As a ford mechanic would you choose a 2019 3.5 eb or 5.0 for your personal vehicle?
Nice video sir, Good fix channel!
Thanks Sir Mason. We have a 2017 and a2019. So far so good. Just waiting for 😢
I have a 2020 f150 with the 3.5 and mine is rattling on startup also and last for a while it’s got 140,000 miles on it
Hey thanks for the update! I see in the description you put the new style and old style part description but it says exhaust?
Hello and thanks for the videos! So how have the new phasers help up? Have they been coming back now?
Thanks a lot for these videos. What is the new part number? You said it started with an M. Is it still a factory recall or should I look to come out of pocket for this fix?
Just had these put in my 20. Hopefully they fix the problem
Now have a decel rattle after new phasers. Lol
its been 9 months, did it fixed the problem?
@@miguelangelalanis5105 yes
Can we get your opinion on which Ford diesel we should buy? What year range and maybe what to look for as problems
Any 6.7
Would this fit on a 2013 Ford F-150 Ecoboost? Would really help to know
did you ever get a answer? i have a 2013 aswell
I have a 2019 F150 getting tbis job done right now at 95K miles. If i replace all phasers, timing chains and tensioners how long do i got before ill need to do this again? $3,500 ouch
Make sure they put the ML3Z updated phasers and hopefully never!
I didn't realize that they lift the body off the frames now for working on the trucks?
If not repaired will it cause engine failure?
The noise did return after the 4th Cam Phaser replacement with the same symptoms as before. I no longer have that truck
And that the EXTREMELY loud knocking for 1-2 seconds right at startup? after it's competlely cold, or are you talking about another rattle like turbo waste gate?
seconds right at startup
Hey bud I think your doing a great thing and they are lucky to have you. I recently bought a 2019 f150 limited as you know it has the high output 3.5 Ecoboost and the check engine light came on checked and it’s a p0022 but if the light didn’t come on I wouldn’t now there was a problem it runs fine the truck has 25000 miles what should I do? Thanks again for your videos very helpful
Great video!
Thanks for your awesome videos, Mason!
I have a question for you:
How long would you think it should take for a dealership shop to get parts in to do a cam phaser repair on a 2018 F150? This would be in north Alabama.
I ask, because I am currently in week 5 of waiting for parts to arrive.
I just purchased a used expedition in north Alabama. It had the cam phaser issue. Im taking it to the dealership tomorrow. I would think they would be keeping an inventory on these since it’s a very common issue. But who knows with todays post Covid shipping.
Question for the technician, are the 3.5 eco-bost in the Ford Transits having the same problems?
I had the updated parts installed (4 of them) about a year back and now I have the rattling issue again.. Expedition 2018
Same
@@koltenpierce3707 you know later I went to them and they made some computer reset and noise became much lesa
Can you use the new part (ML3Z-6256-A) for a 2019? I noticed it only lists 2021-2023 on the ford compatibility list….
So If I get mine fixed will I have the new ones in. I have an appointment tomorrow.
Will these be compatible with the Gen 1 3.5 ecoboost?
So is there a recall for this??
Have they done a recall on these phasers to be replaced with the updated ones?
What about a 2021 ecoboost that has a rattle, would that have the updated phasers?
Is Ford covering the cost of replacing cam phasers a second time if the "new" replacement phasers are rattling?
Hey I have a 19 raptor and the cam phaser are scheduled are getting replaced what other parts would you recommend to change while it open. I heard recommend to change oil pump, timing chain and tensioner anything else would you change. What are those part numbers of other parts you would change thanks
What is the risk of not doing the repair? Is it just the issue of the noise at cold startup, or is there damage being done to the engine?
30K since started, no issues. Try flood mode, gets oil up there so no rattle / less
Some people never change them and say nothing happens so who knows.
Excellent video 👍 👍
Just picked up my 22 3.5 eco f150 today . Hope it’s a good one for me
How's it feel, spending all that money on a vehicle and you have to hope.
@@mikewest712 i think any mass produced vehicle is a hope . Ha
When that pin on the phaser breaks, does it wind up in the bottom of the oil pan?
Do you know if all dealer service departments are using the newer phasers for the replacement? My 2020 is in the shop for a knocking noise coming from the drivers side phasers. I’m afraid they’ll put the same old parts in it.
Hey Mason, I have a '18 EB with 130k miles and was wondering if you have a video of the general steps for doing this phaser job for us poor people that can't really afford $4-$6000? Great videos.
Start pulling stuff apart, keep your bolts organized and remember how it goes back together
@@dope_prolific that’s what my dad always said! Just put it back together the way you took it apart. But in reverse. Certainly sounds easy. 🤷🏼
@@Maynardd yes but the trick is to actually understand what your taking apart before actually doing it. Tremendously helps when reassembling.
Mason, I been wanting a 3.5 ecoboost f-150 from 15-17 should I do it? Just don’t wanna visit the dealership but I like the trucks.
You should do a video of removing cab off expedition like you did f150
It’s pretty much the same thing
I saw you took the bumpers off and all this stuff
I missed the last part did you say GM's have less problems than fords? It's weird you would think Ford would do a recall with so many people having this problem, and them discontinuing those particular cam phasers. I have a 2019 Expedition and I'm having the same problem with the cam phasers rattling noise. Just curious, do you know how much your dealership charges to change all 4 cam phasers.
Does this repair/fix apply to the coyote engine as well?
Can onyone tell me the TSB showing this part is recommended? My truck is at the dealer right now (2018 Expedition) getting phasers and they refude to use the M part number because the Ford TSB does not recommend it per the 2023 TSB. Are all of the H part numbers the bad design?
Do you install a new timing chain when you replace the cam phasers or put the old timing chain back on. Thanks for your time
All up to customer
My 2016 Ford F150 had this issue and they replaced all of them.
Where would I find all the torque specs and if any sequence for bolt tightening for like intakes front covers and such?
Also what is the typical price for replacement? I just want to compare and ensure they don't over-quote me.
So how much does it cost?
Or will Ford cover the cost due to faulty design?
Im doing this job tomorrow is it faster to lift the cab like you did?
Do you have to reprogram the pcm after putting the phasers in??
Do the ‘21 models have the updated phasers?
Is the rattle just an annoyance or will the phaser eventually cause damage to other stuff if ignored?
everytime it does it it's damaging your cams, timing chains, tensions, timing chain sliders. which will eventually lead to a constant knocking at idle and eventually catastrophic damage
@@nastysoda9212people never fix it and they have 150k 200k miles on their trucks.
