  • Today we're talking MINDSET CHANGE, how we define success, being brave enough to stand out, enjoying the journey, and loving others. I'm a flawed human who struggles with these things as much as anyone else, but these are 5 sources of inspiration (my favorite books, podcasts, thinkers and youtuber) who motivate me everyday. I've never been more excited to share a video - these are the things that are most important to me. I hope there's something in here to lift you up today.

    Grandmother here. Just have to say that knowing ourselves, figuring out who we are is a long journey. And that’s ok. Life is full of twists and turns. Just be true to you. Be kind to everyone. You eventually get to a place of peace. Comfort in your own skin. Enjoy the process. And if we are lucky we have friends like Caroline to enjoy the ride. 💜😊

    Your first point about our jobs and identity and how you feel about it really resonated with me. My fancy job was nothing more than a signal to others that I had made it in some way. They didn't know that I cried every day, I wasn't very good at it, and that my boss treated me horribly. It just mattered that I got to say I was off to the World Bank or setting up a meeting with so and so ambassador. When I left to go back to teaching I didn't want to tell anyone. I felt like I wasted my fancy NYU degree and that I was giving up. BUT, as these stories go, it was the best decision ever. You're such a shining light Caroline. You could do any job and it still wouldn't be the most impressive thing about you. Let your heart and mind believe that! Thanks for another great video.

    • @Caroline_Winkler
      @Caroline_Winkler  ปีที่แล้ว +11

      Ahh man that resonates 😑❤️ and wow so glad that it ended up being the best decision you ever made🥲 (I mean of course it was! But still, just love to hear that.
      Ps. Jinx on getting a fancy pointless NYU degree. Girl I majored in “drama”. LOL

      @@Caroline_Winkler I grew up in the "those who can't, teach" era so it was really hard to wrap my brain around identifying as a teacher even though I loved it and it made me happy. I think what I've learned is that the joyful people don't care what their life looks like from the outside, they just carry on with what brings them joy. That's what I want!
      And I legit don't know where my degree is! I'm thankful for it but I also think I lost it :)

      I worked years to finally get an executive position in the nonprofit world. Loved the mission, hated the job. Enjoyed the accolades my friends and family gave me for achieving my goal but not enough to stay. I left for another job but got laid off during pandemic. Returned to prior org where I was formerly COO and now I’m a consultant writing their grants, working remotely, and living life for me! Success is never a straight road and often ends up being something you never imagined. 🤗

      @Caroline_Winkler  ปีที่แล้ว +9

      Wow “success often ends up being something you never imagined” - I love that and completely agree. I don’t think we’re good at guessing what will really make us happy and fulfilled!

    • @jazybelle24
      @jazybelle24 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      @@JD4evr I think leaving a mission based job is extra hard. Like, I still care about the work my non profit did, I just couldn't work there anymore. One of my absolute favorite youtubers to watch is Damon Dominique, he mostly makes travel related content but he dives into culture and stereotypes in such a real way, and also is just so entertaining as well. I'll second this comment. 👌 the Disney Channel vs. Indie film comment was such a light bulb moment. I think to be in indie film in the land of Disney and succeed is too inspiring for words. To be able to hold someone's attention without flashy editing and bright colors and goofy voices...it makes me think it's possible. ❤️

    I never get excited about an influencer or TH-camr putting out a video but I can honestly say if you had 100s of videos I’d happily watch them all. I really felt for you when you mentioned the bit about getting respect for being a coder and not an artist. As a society we put too much pressure on job titles, for what? That’s not what makes us dignified and valuable, it’s our actions, and morality that do, in my opinion at least 🤷🏽‍♀️

    I love that you are genuinely annoyed by things on your videos. Most youtubers are so over happy and over positive when they film themselves it makes the viewer think that something is wrong with him. I love that you are real, you do not smile all the time, you are pissed off by things of the day to day life, you are just a real person with positive and negative emotions and this is reassuring to watch. Have a good day!

    Mr. Grant is right. Basic food, clothing and shelter are all we really NEED. That is success. The rest is just wants. We can measure our own level of success by the quality of the needs and wants we acquire. If you're unhappy with the quality, or the means to acquire, change is in order.

    I just discovered you through your viral video and watched the vlog where you mentioned how this other video has performed really poorly... I had to come look at it.
    Girl, you did a great job. I could feel the passion you have for the content pieces you recommended and convinced me to go check them out. Funny enough one of my least watched videos is exactly the same topic as this one and I also didn't understand what I did wrong.
    No matter how much work and passion we put into our videos, sometimes they just don't perform well. Loved your reasoning around it in that vlog. I also recently made a video that got me to my first million views on a video and it's definitely not one of the best I have on the channel 🤷‍♀ Your home organization video instead is a masterwork! You'll improve so many daily lives with it, mine included. Sending some love from Udine, Italy.

    I just absolutely love your content, delivery, and how genuinely funny you are. I have recently retired and planning on a new journey. A passion since I was in my 20’s. I love antiques and having fun thrifting. As everyone says, “the thrill of the hunt”. I love design and everything that has to do with the home, organizing, unique items, quality furnishings and beautiful things. You speak to my heart and soul. I feel we have way too much in common as well. I was an actress in high school and college. I never took it to another level professionally like you did. I went the cautious real estate route and had a nice career, but so ready for my new adventure. You are giving me the aspiration and additional motivation I need.
    Thanks Caroline, I’ll be watching and enjoying everyday!

    I love this video! Lots of new people to check out! I'm familiar with Paige's channel, but hearing you talk about her is really interesting. I feel like you were able to capture what makes her so unique and why I keep coming back to her channel long after I stopped watching other design channels. She isn't afraid to hurt your feelings. I love that. Some of what she likes is too far out for me, but her tips for creating balance and whatnot are applicable to every design style imo. I feel like I get a similar type of information from your channel. I might not buy the same decor, but your ideas and tips make me rethink the way I put things together and question the "rules" I've been hearing from other designers.
    I would love another list like this!

    I'm at a point in my life where I'm hesitating between choosing a career for the passion and meaning that will change something in this world, or choosing a career I excel at, for good money, that will give me the lifestyle I'm aiming for. These suggestions will for sure help me to start my decision process. Thank you Caroline ❤️

    This is one of my favorites of your videos! It made me feel so comforted after feeling low/depressed bc it reminded me there's always an eventual upswing where things get easier and more joyful as I gain more skills and appreciation for living my life. I've been frustrated by the cyclical nature of this growth process lately, but this was something I needed to hear.

    Girl! This was deep for me. I rarely "read." I listen to books on tape in my car and I gain information, lots of information. But you are so right about reading being a vehicle to get information. Then, when you differentiated learning as a virtue vs. the act of reading...Amazing! Made my morning.

    Caroline! So grateful to have found your channel. Your videos are so thoughtfully curated and edited. I'm in real appreciation and admiration for your work.
    Tonight I had a nightmare which I awoke abruptly and immediately came here to watch one of your videos for comfort. I chose this one because you mentioned the making of it and how no one watched it. Happy to see there are many more views now!
    All that to say, thank you so so much for the incredible suggestions. Especially the organizational psychologist (I believe that's what you said). That's my niche and I'd never heard of him.
    Long-winded, but I feel like you understand. Thanks again! 🎉 I appreciate your existence.

    Yet again LOVED this episode. YOU ARE MULTI DIMENSIONAL! And while that is an admirable trait, it may feel to you, as if you are faltering and always searching for who you really are. You are, first and foremost, an intellect FOR SURE. This is evident in how both articulate and witty you are, as well as in how interested and well versed you are on many topics (your raw honesty about how liking that your job portrays you as in intellect will resonate with many, but recognizing that this isn't necessary is the brave part). You are an actor, which comes through in how comfortable you are in front of the camera, part of what makes you so engaging to watch. You are a comedian, you're ability to improv and your delivery are PERFECT! You're a talented designer, again, well versed and read in addition to having intuitive style and the ability to share it with us. Finally you are a TALENTED you tuber. I never know what each episode will bring and just when I think "oh this is it, this is the content she should focus on", the next episode speaks to me just as loudly. Continue to be multi dimensional as we are all benefiting from all your talents and gifts. Don't worry about understanding your meaning here on earth or grasping your purpose, take your own advice and continue to appreciate your relationships in life, work hard at the things that speak to you and enjoy the journey because you're KILLIN IT. To answer your question, YES more episodes like this......favorite things to read, watch etc. But also more episode on how you helped people with design questions Then again I loved just hearing about how you hurt your knee and hanging with family. Just keep doing you.

    “Peace is prosperity”-Tony gaskins.
    I went from dental assistant to bus driver, I can relate to the lesser value identity. Funny enough, as a bus driver I make about $8 more per hour and have a pension, I can go to doctor appointments now and I’m not overworked and have a 3 hour lunch break. I never thought I’d have a job that offered me peace! While I love dental assisting and miss it so very much, it was really overburdened, emotionally and physically and financially draining even after almost 20 years experience. I don’t feel proud when I say I’m a school bus driver but peace is prosperity and I’m stickin to it.

    I loved this so much - I am a fellow interior designer and love to hear what’s inspiring and motivating others not just in design, but in life. I’m not a huge reader myself, but someone recommended this book to me and I think you would love it too… 101 essays to change the way you think by Briana Wiest. So many mic drop perspectives it’s honestly mind blowing… I always reach for it when I need to get out of my own way/head!

    The meaningful work that expresses your values is something I feel so strongly about. I can’t and don’t focus on work that seems “important” and “valuable” to others. I have found that most often those jobs are about the title and impressing others than the work itself.

    Hey Caroline! Just started watching your videos. You’re so fun to watch! :D I just paused your video at the Adam Grant section because I needed to let you know that I started as a programmer and then tried acting! Haha. I was good at coding and bad at acting. But I didn’t really enjoy either of them. Neither expressed my interests or values. Now I’m a psychotherapist. The difference in how my work energizes me is like night and day! Doing something we don’t love for work is like if we’re all chewing bitter pills for our daily nutrition and collectively concluded that eating is just something everyone has to do throughout the day to stay alive. Work should fuel you! Even now, I end every working day energized, but I still go into them apprehensive because our culture and my past experience tell me to fear effortful work :/ Isn’t that awful? Oh yeah I’m also into the dead flowers in your background! Maybe it’s the juxtaposition of the visual vibrance and the..deathiness? 😂

    All excellent info! The reading books comment though, I needed to hear. My brother reads several books a month, good for him, whatever. You know when someone has a mirror and they’re bouncing the light’s reflection into your eyes? That’s what being ADD and trying to read is for me, read a couple sentences…distraction, read the same couple sentences again…distraction, repeat…

    Ok, so after watching the one video where you referenced how little interest this one got, I finally got motivated to watch it. Girl, the title is misleading. I was expecting it to be about a very meh to me topic, and was delighted to find out that it really is a “what I’m currently reading/listening to/following” montage.
    Man, I’m totally into that! I love getting suggestions on who to read, follow, or listen to for new ideas or for finding kindred spirits that are on my team. Thanks for this episode! 🙂

    I really appreciate you bringing up your struggles with reading. I've always had reading comprehension issues growing up and several teachers and peers told me I was smart but wasn't "trying hard enough." I'm 28 and have always loved learning but found it daunting to try to read books. I've felt like it was cheating and that I was a bit dumb for using audiobooks and podcasts as my methods for retrieving information. It's nice to see some representation of this elsewhere. You're lovely
