Kenya - Opposition to Moi's security zone

Opposition politicians have condemned a declaration by Kenyan President Arap Moi on Thursday (18/12) as a move designed to prevent them from campaigning in a key western region. Moi declared the Transmara-Gucha and Kisii-Migori districts a "security operation zone", saying its borders had to be sealed by security forces following ethnic clashes during the last month in which more than 35 people have been killed. The decision effectively barred presidential candidates for the December 29 general election from holding campaign rallies in the region.
