    Absolute altitude of 300m is likely correct: GPS reports altitude above sea level.
    Betaflight sets altitude to zero on arm, to report relative altitude in-flight.

    I have the Flywoo GM10 pro on my chimera 7 and i use it in combination with the vifly gps-mate and the other week i got 32 sats... absolutely incredible unit and fills me with confidence. I managed 3.72km to my goal location and it flew home with RTH perfectly. landed 1.5m away from take off point. I did make sure to use Galileo in the config as i am in the UK, think i will get the m10 chipsets for all my quads now.

      I use the HGLRC M100 mini M10gps In combination with the vifly GPS mate and Betaflight 4.4.1 and I am getting similar performance. The other day I was curious so I did a RTH test with my mini 3 pro, Air 2s, avata, and my 2 diy fpv drones. We all know how good DJI's GPS and return to home functionality is so I was super excited when both of my custom built fpv quads landed closer to the take off point than ANY of the DJI drones! They all landed within about 3 meters of their home point but 1 of my quads landed within inches of the landing pad! It was an awesome experience!! And that M100 GPS from HGLRC is like 15mmx15mm so it will literally fit on anything! It's also like $15-$20 and the GPS mate is $15-$20 so for a Max $40 investment, you could *almost* never lose a quad again! (I haven't lost any, knock on wood)

      @@carlochannel5027 no, the vifly gps mate is a gps battery backup and buzzer that goes inline from the fc to the gps and allows you to switch between 3.3v and 5v as well as power the gps unit in between pack changes so you don’t have to reaquire sats every time you power up.

  • @MactacFPV
    @MactacFPV ปีที่แล้ว +19

    This looks fantastic, and could mean the difference between losing a quad and getting it back, especially in the mountains where you can lose sats easily. I think it's important for people to know that different satellite receivers can't actually "find" sats faster. On a cold start, they all need to download the almanac (as you point out), and while they are doing that, they check for each sat as the entry for it is downloaded. All satellite receivers take the same amount of time to download the almanac (12 and a half minutes), so they all get them at the same "speed". The difference is that more sensitive receivers can detect MORE sats, so although they aren't picking up any particular sat faster than any other receiver (since they all take the exact same amount of time), you will get a lock faster. So it would be correct to say that some receivers will get a lock more quickly, but it wouldn't be correct to say that it finds specific satellites faster. It sort of amounts to the same thing, but it's an important difference. In other words, to find ALL the possible sats, ALL GPS receivers will take the exact same amount of time (12.5 minutes) The other thing to keep in mind is that on a warm start (ie you haven't moved locations and it hasn't been too long since you were powered up), it doesn't have to download the almanac again, which means you will get a lock much, much faster. Some people have issues with their receiver always taking forever to get sats - that's either because you are always cold starting, or because your battery is dead. I've seen lots of cheap GPS receivers ship with dead batteries, leading people to think the receiver is "slow" because it's always cold starting.

      I wish betaflight would allow to upload almanacs through usb/serial. Like smartwatch apps do … so before leaving home everyone could just cut this 12m off

    • @jiatan_fpv
      @jiatan_fpv ปีที่แล้ว

      @@NikitaShirokov Speedybee could do this; Betaflight already allows serial passthrough required for gps comms. Although I'm pretty sure the way to leave passthrough mode is via FC reset, and that usually means powering down the quad, including the GPS that you just uploaded AssistNow data to..

    I saw 18-20 sats on cheap bn-220 gps, it greatly depends on the place you fly and amount of interference. Yet, i agree, the better chip, the better. Matek m8q works better than bn220, and this m10 should be even better.
    Also, to dramatically improve gps performance, you should power it without esc, e.g. from 4.5v usb pin and let it sit for 30-60 minutes. It will download all possible almanac data and will see 18+ gps very fast next time

    I have been using the Matek ones. Not sure what chip those are but they lock at least that fast as well. You need to go to the CLI and find the item with hdop in the name and turn that on. That will put the hdop value after the sat count in the OSD. Super useful if using GPS rescue.

      what does hdop represent?

      @@ShizzelBodizel You know when you open maps on your smart phone and it draws a circle around the pin to let you know how accurate the fix is? HDOP let’s you know how accurate the GPS thinks the fix is. The number of satellites does not tell you that. The smaller the number the better the fix. A value of 1 is good but I typically see 0.5.

    • @JustinHunnicutt
      @JustinHunnicutt ปีที่แล้ว +1

      that's mostly right, hdop shows how accurate the horizontal gps position is likely to be as a function of the relative position of the satellites. If they're all in one place in the sky hdop is high, when they're spread out it gets lower. Ublox gps actually output an accuracy estimate that takes more things into account that does what you described. So I guess simple answer is yeah it's roughly the position accuracy.

    • @NETBotic
      @NETBotic ปีที่แล้ว

      @@JustinHunnicutt It's not the GPS sats being all in one place in the sky. That's impossible. There are more than enough to cover the sky. What it is, is the sats being blocked by terrain or other objects. HDOP is usually only considered on the ground or low flying aircraft. It's useless above a few hundred feet AGL, as there's nothing to block sats.

    In Betaflight 4.5 there will be gps related improvements.
    All Ublox gps will benefit from this, so M8 as well.
    Faster locks and more satellites expected because dynamic models and full power mode is default now.
    You can already test these if you flash 4.5-zulu.

    With the GPS Mate, my M10 would get 20-24 satellites under 2 minutes. GPS Mate fried itself. Having the quad powered up with the GPS it seemed to take MUCH longer (I assume because the o3, rx, and Bluetooth enabled FC cause interference.) I'd love to suggest the GPS Mate, but mine died within 10 flights.
    My solution is though, disable the check for number of sats, and for your first flight just fly around and you'll pick up your sats. Come back and land to enable GPS rescue. This negates sitting on the ground heating up while waiting for the first few sats.

    • @UnrulyRotors

The biggest enemy of GPS are VTX analog or digital units because of electrical interferences. This can be easily seen if you power GPS ower usb cable (solder gps module on 3.3V or any other pad which is powered over USB cable) and just let GPS to lock on sat. Then look in BF what happen if you plug in the battery. You will see big change in GPS signal loss.

    Question, I fly a FLYWING FW450 heli and I want to upgrade the GPS antenna. This GPS also has a compass within. FlyWing wants 50-60 bucks for its new GPS antenna. Do u know if this antenna will work on the FlyWing FW450 Heli? If so, would I have to modify it in any way? Thanks

    Can you do a gps rescue video with an M10? My foxeer 250 consistently gets 20 sats sitting in my office. I'm wondering if this would improve accuracy. I would try it myself but I'm waiting on a new stack as I fried mine. I'm also a noob who hasn't left his back yard yet....

    Hello I want to get into fpv and I have never flown a drone, I have a 400$ budget and I would like to buy a controller, goggles, and a drone but I don't know where to start or what to get. What drone, goggles and controller should I get, or should I get a specific rtf kit you recommend? I also want decent equipment that I can use for probably a year or two before I would like to upgrade. Also I am looking for a digital option in my budget, if that's not possible then I understand, because fpv can be a pretty pricey hobby but I just want some recommendations on where to start, thank you

    Hello! I want to build my first FPV drone, which weighs around 610g. I want to have a fully black drone and thought of the IFlight Xing 2's 2207 in black with 1750 kv. I would use the Gemfan Hurricane JB edition. Would 1750kv be to weak for such an drone and should I get the Xing 2's with 1855kv? Would there be a substantial speed difference? I want to fly 6s.

    I bet the reason it shows 300m is because it's measuring your height above mean sea level and your place is around 1000ft msl.

    • @UnrulyRotors

      not sure the reason, but once you start flying it fixes itself.

    • @OldManCassius
      @OldManCassius ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@UnrulyRotors Yeah, there's a tickbox in betaflight that sets your current altitude as zero once you arm. You can actually untick that box if you want to see your altitude in msl.

I tried even another uart and even another F4 fc... I have the version with compass so I connected the I2C wires too. M8 chip was working fine. Thanks!

    This is so much worse than all my M8 GPS modules. I usually get a cold start lock (6 sats) in under a minute, sometimes under 30 seconds, and then a warm start almost instantly. I usually get up to 10-20 sats as well in the air, and I get them on the ground for a warm start. It's so much about placement on the quad, BNF manufacturers mess this up so badly and people think it's the GPS module's fault. Put your M8 on an arm and see how much better it is than this...
