Heading back up to town to get my shrubs... how many do you think I will get? STAY TUNE... maybe I'll video how to plant these! Let me know what you thinK!
Please show another video of what your Vanilla Strawberry Hydrangeas look like now. I got one about 5 years ago now its peeking over my 7 foot fence and is 5 foot wide. Its absolutely beautiful and about to bloom here in Illinois. I've bought 8 more since then.
Hello, I planted two vanilla strawberry hydrangeas several years ago. They get full sun with a west side exposure. I live in the Midwest and they have grown to be very large with large flowers every year. My question is the flowers always remain white and never change over to the pink. Both plants seem to have this issue and the local nursery cannot explain it. I am told changing the ph of the soil does not effect this particular hydrangea. Any tips? Thank you.
Are you sure it is a Strawberry Hydrangea? Sometimes the tags get mixed in garden centers. I do it all the time at my place in the garden. However, I do believe that the plant could be a strawberry hydrangea and it just doesn't turn a dark / pink like they are described to do. I recently moved my oldest Vanilla Strawberry Hydrangeas to a new location in the garden. They now get full sun until about 3 pm which is way more than they did in the original location. I need to put together a video to share about this experience. I will try and come back here to share an update video of that and share what the blooms look like. My original shrubs always stayed a light white / pink. I do believe that was because of the poor soil conditions and lack of sun. STAY TUNED and be sure to reach out to me on my website for more information: brenhaas.com/
I have propagated a couple of dozen strawberry vanilla hydrangeas. Do you think it is safe to put them in the ground this Fall or wait till Spring? I live in Alabama.
I am in Ohio zone 5b - and I have planting hydrangeas during the Autumn season. Be sure to watch that plant gets enough water so the roots will take. You don't want it to dry out before it goes dormant. I've got 2 new shrubs I am trialing this season that will be going in this weekend. We've had so much rain I had to put off planting because it is just too muddy. Keep me posted on how your Hydrangeas turn out Steve.
Hi, my strawberry vanilla hydrangea tree is in the ground for it's 2nd year this year, I am in Buffalo, NY by the way and it's only got green foliage on one side of the branches. There are about 6-7 branches on the back side of the tree that are completely void of any green leaves. It's like half of the tree is doing ok and the other half is dead? We just got it last year in 2020 and planted it, in maybe July I think. I was told to add some slow release fertilizer and soak it. I was wondering what might be the issue with this. I have a limelight, a pinky-windy and sure fire and they are all doing fabulous.
I have never grown a strawberry vanilla hydrangea tree. I believe the plant is made into tree shape by pruning. You might be able to prune the tree back and see if you get a new growth to reshape it. Consider consulting local garden center or a tree specialist in your area. I hope this helps.
@@BrenHaas Thank you for responding, Bren. Love your name, by the way. I think I may have trimmed back some of the newer growth branches too soon this spring. A big oops for me. The tree is showing signs of getting buds for the summer season, thank goodness. I did contact the greenhouse, they told me to get some fertilizer and sprinkle it about the base before a rain. I'm going to do that. Thank you for your response and for your enjoyable videos! All the best to you!
Fortunately, I have not had to fertilize my Vanilla Strawberry Hydrangea. A site a trust recommends all purpose 12-4-8 or 10-10-10. Keep me posted Eileen.
Hi I just planted 6 strawberry Vanilla hydrangeas// I’m hoping they get as big as the limelight!! I see you have both... do you know if they grow as high?
Hello! I'm about 35 to 40 minutes south east of Columbus. And I have a Vanilla Strawberry Hydrangea that I am about to plant. 😅 But I don't want to put it in the wrong spot. Anyway I was thinking of putting in my yard in front of my flower bed but I'm not sure if it's the right location 😂 help please 😅
The shrubs I am growing love morning to early afternoon sun so keep that in mind when planting in the garden. I think they would do great in a flower bed with a nice border. My new location for the Vanilla Strawberry has an ivy ground over creeping in. I don't mind it as long as I can keep it pruned off of the shrub. A good live ground cover can keep the plants soil and roots happy especially in drought conditions. Thanks for asking and I will share more later if you like!
Hi Bren, thanks for the video! I just stumbled on your page today. I noticed your beautiful dogwood tree 2:09. I was wondering if you could tell me more about it? make a video? I'm curious as to how long the pink 'fruit'? stay on the tree?
Hey Johnnie - the plant will do amazing in full sun as long as you aren't in a super hot growing zone. I personally recommend full sun in zones 3-6. 7-10 hardiness zones maybe pushing it. IF you don't know your hardiness zone check out my website for links to the USDA : brenhaas.com/hardiness-zone-usda/
I purchased these two years ago (entering the 3rd year), and they are becoming full and need to be pruned but was wondering if you can any advice on how/if these can be pruned from a shrub into a tree?
I have never done this but you have my curious. I did find a great video of a gentleman who has done this and learned alot from watching it. I might try this! th-cam.com/video/0E3gF35pMgg/w-d-xo.html

Hi Bren, after watching your video a few weeks ago, I lucked up on a approx. 3-4 ft Vanilla Strawberry yesterday at a local garden center but I just remembered it was under their shade house. I noticed you're planting yours in full sun. I'm in Florida Zone 9B and wondering if this variety will do well in Full sun as it gets so big? My other hydrandrea's get morning /early afternoon sun, they seem stressed although the foliage looks healthy my plans are to move them. Any solutions would be great.
sorry I am late replying. I was out in the garden .... you know how that is. I shared a blog post about this shrub at brenhaas.com/vanilla-strawberry-hydrangea-tip/. Also - in my garden, the shrub maxed out at 4 feet tall. In florida you may want to talk to then nursery and see what they recommend. I would guess the shrub would do better in late morning sun / afternoon shade in your hardiness zone.
I am sorry... it is a super simple plant to grow. I will remember your comment in my next video and try to share some growing tips. ASK ME ANYTHING! brenhaas.com/connect/
Bren Haas hello and I love your videos I have a vanilla strawberry tree that I transplant it two years ago she is leaving but not a lot of leaves I was wondering what I could do to help her out. She did have blooms last year but very few compared to my other ones
The Vanilla Strawberry Hydrangea in my hardiness zone 5b / 6 do best in full sun. In warmer states they recommend the shrub gets a little more shade. I hope this helps you.
Ok.. that is a Kousa dogwood - or the Japanese Dogwood. I have 2 of them on my property here in NW Ohio. I will share more with you as they start to bloom this spring and summer.

They get huge at least 6 foot tall
I guess I keep my pruned back. The growers description of this shrub says: Its mature height is 6-7 feet, with a spread of 4-5 feet.
thank u so much for ur time
Thank you for commenting.
How are your vanilla strawberry doing? I am not sure if I should plant them, they look a bit leggy at the nurseries.
They do best in mid-late summer planted. You gotta get them in the ground so the roots can get established before winter. Good LUck!

Hi they need frost to bloom
do you mean a dormancy time? I've seen hydrangeas in cooler states like Georgia. The Vanilla Strawberry Hydrangea is rated for hardiness zones 4-8.
sweetie you are lovely but where are the tips? I thought we can learn about the plant, how to care for it?
I am sorry... it is a super simple plant to grow. I will remember your comment in my next video and try to share some growing tips. ASK ME ANYTHING!

I'm indebted to you on Facebook.
Thank you for stopping by my channel.
This didn’t give me any advice
