It's clear to me that he has way more depth as a character than what appears on the surface. The way he isn't even phased when Black Sampson gave him the "call me Dad" monologue shows he's self-confident on a level that often comes from having to rely on one's self as a means to survive, and pulling through. It also might reflect a deep disdain for authority that could come from childhood-trauma. I also love the juxtaposition of Rexxsplode's confidence with the clear insecurities around abandonment that are on display during the scene where Atom Eve catches him cheating with Dupli-Kate. It's so sad to me that the conclusion he drew from Atom Eve hanging out with Invincible more was that she was leaving (abandoning) him.
My theory about Mark's comics is that because superheroes exist for real in this universe, the comics turned more to other genres. It's like in "Watchmen", where the most popular comics are about pirates. Also, the one about the underwater welder is a real comic by Jeff Lemire, "The Underwater Welder"
In the comics, Mark's favorite comic is Science Dog, but maybe they didn't get the separate license for that character, so they had to change it? Or maybe they just thought Seance Dog was funnier.

Robert Kirkman, who wrote the comic, is also one of the lead writers on the show. So yes, it closely follows the comics. This is basically Kirkman redoing his work now that he is a better, more mature storyteller.
I think the Demon Detective might look like Hellboy, but the character is closer to Constantine. (If you haven't watched it yet, I'd strongly recommend checking out the Keanu Reeves movie. It might not be fully canon, but it's well-done, under-appreciated, and, y'know, Keanu Reeves.) The plot is basically that he briefly died and went to hell, and he's been working as a demon-hunter to try to buy his way into heaven.

Demon Detective is kind of like a mix between Hellboy, Constantine, The Question, and Rorschach. Dupli-Kate tried to intercept Eve from knowing Rex was also in the shower, then tried to pass all the blame off on Rex. Some people will give Dupli-Kate a pass, but Rex wasn't the only one betraying Eve here.
The Guardians of the Globe were definitely parodies of the Justice League. Mainly because Kirkman was killing them off in the first chapter and it allowed to have people to understand and get attached to these characters and infer their histories based on the original characters. Most of the characters in Invincible are original, though they do play on superhero tropes quite a bit.
13:50 this is a large reason invincible is tense during the action. We largely feel main characters are safe, they are the show. But the innocent bystanders, they are fragile. We know they may die so we worry for them. I think it was a fantastic idea to make sure squishy people are around the major action scenes.

I wouldn't call Invincible a satire of the superhero genre. It starts out feeling that way with it's own take on the Justice League and the typical lineup of superhero archetypes, but it diverges and becomes it's own thing pretty quickly. When I first watched the show I thought it was just another Dark Superman deconstruction too, but I recently finished reading the comic books and it develops its own identity that is so much more interesting than the "What if superheroes were evil/jerks/more like real people" trope that's become popular lately.
Yes it is based on a comic by the same creator of the Walking Dead which is why all of the Guardians of the Globe from ep 1 where actors from the Walking Dead series as well as Black Samson, and of course Steven Yeun as Mark. They did change some of the characters like Amber is a blonde girl in the comic, and Shrinking Ray is a man.

Invincible likes to remix and blend characters and powers from Marvel and DC characters. I think its less about being a satire or parody and more about starting with familiar archtypes and then veering them into unexpected territory.
All of the heroes are sort of emulating heroes we know from the majot IPs. Darkblood is like an amalgam of Hellboy, Spirit, and a little bit of The Demon/Etrigan, at least that is what I get from him. I am sure there are other influences but all of the heroes of familiar flavors that fused like a some weird Doritos promo. Kirkman did a good job making a fleshed out hero world using our increasing familiarity with comic hero tropes, even back when the this book was coming out. Also pretty dope how well they translated Ryan Ottley's designs to animation.
At the moment, Cecil's goal is not to replace the Guardians of the Globe, because frankly, that just isn't possible. The original Guardians were the strongest, most experienced heroes on the planet. Black Samson is the only person who understands the standard of what they have to live up to.

The entire concept is based on riffs within the comic genre. All the characters, the motifs, the storylines. They'll all run within similar bounds of other comic properties. Sometime commenting on them and the genre itself. Sometimes pointing fun at them. Sometimes reflecting on the validity of the tropes. Add in some political/social commentaries mixed with the ultra violence and you get the breadth of the IP.
My head canon is that, when Mark asks Cecil what state Mt. Rushmore is in, and Cecil replies with "What do they teach you kids in school these days?" He was actually leaving to look it up for himself.

im sure this has been said before in this comment section but the invincible comics are a satire in the opposite direction of the boys. the boys is written by someone who doesnt like superhero comics so that satire is a lot more mean-spirited and cynical, but robert kirkman absolutely loves them so invincible is much more of a love letter containing a lot of different elements and tropes from superhero media! absolutely loving this series so far as a reader of the comics and i hope y'all enjoy season 3 when it comes out!
Love how Monstergirl lasts like less than a second with Omniman. He's a Viltrumite, everyone else are just people, no matter how strong, just weak people. Strong against other people, not against aliens.
Super hero comics borrow from each other a lot. Especially ones like these that are made to subvert expectations. So that’s why there are so many similarities between these characters and others.
this show is its own comic universe. its not part of a big connected world like marvel or dc. this show is adapted from a single comic called invincible. just like how the boys is only based on the comic "the boys". some characters have had short term spin off comics. but invincible is just a singular comic with a singular story

I think the clone dudes are the coolest idea for a character in the whole show, they were just a human, but they have made so many clones that now they are blue and they enhanced themselves while they were at it so the original has obviously been dead for a long time, but they also make sure that the process of cloning makes them forget which one actually pulled the switch, because it causes problems if they know which one is the clone. Also, dark wing isn't based on batman, it's based on a Donald duck cartoon lol, and there are multiple stories that follow these tropes, like the demon trying to help people is basically Constantine (kinda), hellboy (kinda), Alucard in castlevania (kinda), Alucard in hellsing (more so since he actually is demonic instead of just a vampire, which are created by demons), ghost rider (kinda), spawn (kinda), multiple characters in charmed and or supernatural... the list goes on forever.
All that about the Mauler Twins is just straight made up. None of that is in the comics. And Darkwing duck is a duck cartoon. But Invincibles Darkwing is a Batman reference.
Over a thousand years ago Omni man was born on the planet Viltrum, but at that exact same time, on Earth, it was the month of August. Thus his entire personality can be summed up with characteristics associated with the constellation of Leo. Makes perfect sense.
Omniman is a parody of Vegeta from dragonball/Superman. Viltrumians share a lot of similarities with saiyans in their temperament as the story goes on it becomes more clear.

Both are a logical conclusion to "what if Superman/Kryptonians were evil?". I love Dragon Ball, but it has nothing to do with Invincible other than the writers being influenced by Superman.

I wouldn't call Invincible a satire of the superhero genre. It starts out feeling that way with it's own take on the Justice League and the typical lineup of superhero archetypes, but it diverges and becomes it's own thing pretty quickly. When I first watched the show I thought it was just another Dark Superman deconstruction too, but I recently finished reading the comic books and it develops its own identity that is so much more interesting than the "What if superheroes were evil/jerks/more like real people" trope that's become popular lately.

Yes it is based on a comic by the same creator of the Walking Dead which is why all of the Guardians of the Globe from ep 1 where actors from the Walking Dead series as well as Black Samson, and of course Steven Yeun as Mark. They did change some of the characters like Amber is a blonde girl in the comic, and Shrinking Ray is a man.

Invincible likes to remix and blend characters and powers from Marvel and DC characters. I think its less about being a satire or parody and more about starting with familiar archtypes and then veering them into unexpected territory.

All of the heroes are sort of emulating heroes we know from the majot IPs. Darkblood is like an amalgam of Hellboy, Spirit, and a little bit of The Demon/Etrigan, at least that is what I get from him. I am sure there are other influences but all of the heroes of familiar flavors that fused like a some weird Doritos promo.
Kirkman did a good job making a fleshed out hero world using our increasing familiarity with comic hero tropes, even back when the this book was coming out. Also pretty dope how well they translated Ryan Ottley's designs to animation.

At the moment, Cecil's goal is not to replace the Guardians of the Globe, because frankly, that just isn't possible. The original Guardians were the strongest, most experienced heroes on the planet.

The entire concept is based on riffs within the comic genre. All the characters, the motifs, the storylines. They'll all run within similar bounds of other comic properties. Sometime commenting on them and the genre itself. Sometimes pointing fun at them. Sometimes reflecting on the validity of the tropes. Add in some political/social commentaries mixed with the ultra violence and you get the breadth of the IP.
My head canon is that, when Mark asks Cecil what state Mt. Rushmore is in, and Cecil replies with "What do they teach you kids in school these days?" He was actually leaving to look it up for himself.

im sure this has been said before in this comment section but the invincible comics are a satire in the opposite direction of the boys. the boys is written by someone who doesnt like superhero comics so that satire is a lot more mean-spirited and cynical, but robert kirkman absolutely loves them so invincible is much more of a love letter containing a lot of different elements and tropes from superhero media! absolutely loving this series so far as a reader of the comics and i hope y'all enjoy season 3 when it comes out!

Super hero comics borrow from each other a lot. Especially ones like these that are made to subvert expectations. So that’s why there are so many similarities between these characters and others.
this show is its own comic universe. its not part of a big connected world like marvel or dc. this show is adapted from a single comic called invincible. just like how the boys is only based on the comic "the boys". some characters have had short term spin off comics. but invincible is just a singular comic with a singular story

I think the clone dudes are the coolest idea for a character in the whole show, they were just a human, but they have made so many clones that now they are blue and they enhanced themselves while they were at it so the original has obviously been dead for a long time, but they also make sure that the process of cloning makes them forget which one actually pulled the switch, because it causes problems if they know which one is the clone.
Also, dark wing isn't based on batman, it's based on a Donald duck cartoon lol, and there are multiple stories that follow these tropes, like the demon trying to help people is basically Constantine (kinda), hellboy (kinda), Alucard in castlevania (kinda), Alucard in hellsing (more so since he actually is demonic instead of just a vampire, which are created by demons), ghost rider (kinda), spawn (kinda), multiple characters in charmed and or supernatural... the list goes on forever.
All that about the Mauler Twins is just straight made up. None of that is in the comics. And Darkwing duck is a duck cartoon. But Invincibles Darkwing is a Batman reference.

Omniman is a parody of Vegeta from dragonball/Superman. Viltrumians share a lot of similarities with saiyans in their temperament as the story goes on it becomes more clear.
Parody isn't the word you're looking for. Also, I doubt Robert Kirkman was influenced by DBZ. It's more likely similarities are due to Akira Toriyama being influenced by Superman (the movie Superman II specifically)

Both are a logical conclusion to "what if Superman/Kryptonians were evil?". I love Dragon Ball, but it has nothing to do with Invincible other than the writers being influenced by Superman.
