    Incredible comparison Anthony. Although not a collector of this particular brand of characters, I can really see how SOTA was obviously one-step ahead of its competitors. It's amazing how much a little innovation can prove timeless. SOTA's Guile remains the standard to which all other Guile's are to be compared against. Thanks again for the video.

    Sota's highly detailed and pseudo-realistic style reminds me of Toybiz's era of Marvel Legends that were also going on at the time (except that Sota were able to stop themselves from adding excessive amounts of texturing and avoided some of the weird proportions that toybiz struggled with). Nowadays, you usually have to go to lines like Storm Collectibles if you want this level of heavily detailed sculpts, which comes at a premium price-point.
    I'm glad that Storm is doing a 6-inch SF Alpha-styled line that'll hopefully be more affordable thanks to the downsized scale, but I'm also curious to see if they'll be able to keep up the same level of detail as their normal line once they move away from the streamlined Alpha designs again.

    There’s an appeal that sota has & it grabbed me all those years ago. I will say this, if you open your figs and pose them, you will struggle with sota. It’s one of the reasons why I displayed them in box. Plus, the packaging was so display worthy, so I couldn’t bring myself to open and discard it.

    Not gonna lie, I had never seen a SOTA figure before and I'm actually amazed at how good it is even after all these years.
    I'd say it's kind of a Marvel Select Venom/Carnage situation: I still think those two figures are the best out of every other Venom/Carnage figure in the market. Their articulation and scale are their only downsides, sculpt, accessories and paint are just beautiful. I really prefer them over the MAFEX ones.
    Back to the video, that SOTA Guile does a couple of things I'd like to see more in some figures like the Marvel Legends, the torso is a good example. I like the way the hips are kind of rounded so when you use the swivel it doesn't break the sculpt. The ML are just ovals and look super ugly when you use the swivel.
    SOTA's headsculpts look great, too. Very detailed and full of life. Jada's are really soft and cartoonish, sure, they could be aiming 100% for that look but I'm still not very fond of their faces 😬
    Better action figure overall: Jada.
    Great display piece and better collectible: SOTA
    Go home and be a family man!: Figuarts 💀

    This is a great example of the toy industry right now. Before, there seemed to be a bigger focus on the art of the toy; of having great musculature, texture, wrinkles, details. You can tell that figure was sculpted by hand, it has 'life', it has feeling. Most modern figures lack that. Plus, paint and labor was cheaper, so having a ton of paint, washes, drybrushes, specifically painted details, was easier to happen. However, nowdays designers focus on the range of motion, articulation, poseability, balance, longevity of the joints, the feeling of hand candy; having something that you just wanna play with. This change is allowed of course thanks to 3d printers and sculpting software. It is much easier to design more functional joints when you can basically use CAD to do it (I know most figures are done in ZBrush). Paint and labor prices have gone up, so adding detailed paint apps, washes and drybrushes is something most companies just don't do anymore. There's also a great lack of artistic talent, so many companies are putting out figures that look inhuman, even when learning about anatomy is easier than ever. And some sculptors are probably not paid enough to do it anyways.
    I dream about a future time when all of these things can be put into a single figure without it being incredibly expensive. Neca was doing great sculpts and paints, and upgrading articulation, but I fear they have abandoned their hand sculpted ways and are putting less and less detail and paint into their figures. Besides, their joints have always been different. SH figuarts sometimes do amazing sculpts and articulation, but usually lack in paint apps (and are usually really expensive). There's the Four Horsemen and Mythic Legions who have great sculpts and paint apps, and are trying to get better at articulation, but they are getting more and more expensive each year, besides, they don't release very often. The other indie toy companies do variations of this; some have great sculpts and paints, others have great articulation, but almost always, not both. Then there's all the high end lines, which usually do pretty good in everything but are so expensive, it's really hard to pick them up (specially internationally, Jesus it's so expensive out here), and they end up feeling not really worth it in the end.
    Will we ever see the perfect figures at the perfect price? I kinda don't think so, because it takes someone who is committed to the art of the figure rather than the money. I would certainly love to do this, I have a lot of knowledge of how action figures should be made, but I lack the money to fund a company like this (and I'm not even in the US, so everything is harder). Maybe there's people out there who would like to do it, have the knowledge, the skills, and the funds... and the desire to do art. Because that's what a good figure is. Interactive art.

    • @AnthonysCustoms
      @AnthonysCustoms  หลายเดือนก่อน +6

      Tl;dr. Jk. I agree but I think it's mostly the lack of talent and care frankly. Some day... Not any time soon... I'll have successfully launched my line and established myself and will release a modern day SOTA Street Fighter line. That's the plan anyway.

    I was looking forward to this one; great video! With many ‘crafted’ things, I feel it’s pretty common for older versions to be superior; like 2d animation. The animation quality from many 90s cartoons blow modern ones out of the water (such as the 90s batman animated series vs the new one that just came out).
    With guile, I prefer Jada’s silhouette and proportions, but I like the ‘harder’ and stylised sculpt of Sota’s. I’m also not a fan of the ab crunch style articulation for sota’s. It’s a personal preference thing; but for me, it’s not very aesthetically appealing :P. I dislike it more than seeing pins for joints

    Guile was one of SOTA’s best SF figures. In terms of sculpt and paint, it is better than Jada to me. In terms of fun factor and poseability, it’s Jada Guile for me. It would be the same with MBison and maybe Fei Long. Of the releases so far, I think Ryu, Ken , Chunners, Cammy, and Dhalsim from Jada would get my vote for being better overall compared to SOTA versions.
    Also, some of my SOTA figures are experiencing some kind of paint dissolving? I have a Gouken still in package, but the paint on his face is turning black. He’s been in storage for years in a controlled temp room and out of direct sunlight. Some of my other in package SOTA figures are experiencing the same issue on different body parts.

    I totally agree with the conclusion, I think the SOTA Guile holds up extremely well all things considered, I was fortunate enough to get one for about $35 a couple years back and because of that I don't have any intention on getting the Jada one unless the price is right, however, the current prices of SOTA Guile makes it hard for me to actually want to suggest it to someone unless they really wanted the best of the best. I also think the Jada could use a similarly darker color scheme, as the garishly bright colors really show when it probably should be more muted.

I agree that the SOTA toys has a better overall look and if there was a way to combine the articualtion of JADAs to it i think it would be a superior figure easily. I like harsher more detailed sculpts on action characters. I think i do prefer a touch of realism when it comes to figures based on people unless it's purely based on cartoons and what not. It's a tricky thing but either way both have cool styles. I think most collectors can agree these kinda videos help a lot so thank you!

    The SOTA body looks like it belongs to an old school WWE action figure. Which is really cool.

    The Jada Guile is my pick, hands down! It looks much more from the game, the colors are brighter, and better to pose. Also, pinless joints, for the win. No contest!

    Great comparison! As much as I love The Jada Toys SF line, Sota is on a whole different level. Way ahead of their time. You can't beat the price, paint, sculpt, aesthetic, etc.

    Great comparison. I’ve sold a lot of things in my collection but the only thing I regret is selling my complete SOTA StreetFighter set. I want to see a Ryu comparison. Because with that I think Jada looks better too. And Bison because I think SOTA looks better still.

    Based on game images and art, it looks like the SOTA figure has the accurate dogtag chain length! And for my part, way back when, I actually preferred the look of that old Jazwares Guile to the SOTA one. (It was definitely the SOTA figure's face that threw me.) These days I think my favorite Guile is the SFIV NECA figure.

    I always prefer Jada's cartoonish stylization for SF personally. When I think about SF it's SF4 and SF2 in the first place, and they were very stylized and cartoonish, so I prefer SF characters to not look too realistic. I don't usually like Sota's style too much honestly, despite the figures themselves being objectively good, although this Guile looks great even to me, just not my cup of tea for SF specifically. A great balance between a cartoonish and realistic style is the Storm line imo, but I rarely collect Storms, and it's a completely different price point.

    I like both guile’s. I have a GI Joe / Action force display that the SOTA guile fit really nicely into because of the paint. The Jada guile sticks out because of the tones, but I kinda like that it sticks out. It was hard to put my SOTA guile away, but he just had such a hard time standing. I really like the Jada and hope that they at least add more paint and leave less of the plastic exposed.

    Honest review, and was forthcoming with his biases.
    Although he rolled back his earlier comment on who won accessories at 21:49, I think one omission about the accessories is I *_think(?)_* Jada's stand, shown with the sonic boom, can also hold Guile (at least it should if there was also a waist clip); and IF that's the case, then he can be posed in his whip kick/flip kick move, which I think would be a positive edging in their favor. Still, waiting for my Jadatoys Guile to arrive (maybe this Friday or Saturday? 🤞)

      The stand is tiny and meant for the sonic boom so it's just a part of that piece.

    Hey Anthony! Now that I see the more realistic look compared side by side with the admittedly more stylized cartoony look for Jada, I like Jada's more. While I definitely see the value in putting good effort and detail into realism, I personally prefer a more stylized esthetic. Thanks for the comparison! Very much appreciated!

    really cool idea with this video, would definitely like to see more like this. for me personally i like both figures for different reasons. i’d probably take jada simply because they look good enough, while not as realistic/ detailed, and pose so nicely. the articulation does a lot for me

    Jada looks like a Street Fighter Alpha figure, while SOTA looks like a Street Fighter III figure, even though Guile did not appear in Street Fighter III

  • @Trikeboy2
    @Trikeboy2 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

    In my opinion, the Jada looks better, since it is replicating the Street Fighter 2 sprite design. The SOTA is more stylized to look more realistic, but that isn't how he looked in the game. Though, I do concede that the skin colour is better on the SOTA.

    This makes me want to see some comparisons between modern Hasbro Marvel Legends and the old school Toy Biz Marvel Legends figures. Some of those old ones held up really well and some are shockingly bad by today’s standards. I’d love to hear your opinions.

  • @KawaiiMiri
    @KawaiiMiri หลายเดือนก่อน +1

    Sota holds its own, you give Sota version modern articulation and Jada ends looking cheap in the end. Sure Sota Guiles head is a bit small and forearms long then the big feet but fix that with modern articulation and you really don't need another Guile ever.
    We have still one more chance at a good SFII Guile with Storm Arena so let's see. I know Yamaguchi is in the game but he will likely do SFVI version and honestly tho Yamaguchi would do the best Guile I know the shoulders and elbows will suck.
    Fingers crossed on Storm Arena Guile.

    For me sota won in the first 5 min of your comparison . Many believe toys are works of art ,and i agree so if sota is hand sculpted that speaks more to being art than computer imaged toys . The difference really stand out ,just like listening to digital music and what you hear on records . W sota . Ofcourse i admit bias since i do not collect cartoony figs like tmnt and motu origins or anime ,i always want more realistic looking toys .One thing i noticed on the jada is the arms look really stumpy and short in comparison to the sota ,im surprised you didnt catch that .

    Would love to see Jada recreate some of the SOTA releases e.g. Guile, just like how Hasbro released Legends in its Toybiz era (20th anniversary, Iron Man series) and just recently Secret Wars (Mattel)
