- My review of Just Cause 4. This is a review that took me some time to make. Overall Just Cause 4 is not a terrible game but it does not deliver on many things that Just Cause 3 did. It does improve some features but also takes some out like base and city liberations.

I apologize for the review being long I just had a lot of material to cover. I know you guys have asked me for this review. Im sorry it took so long but I wanted to put a lot of effort into this review as I have always enjoyed this series. I strongly suggest if you have never played a just cause game to give just cause 3 a try at least. I had a lot of fun with that game and if you like open world games you will enjoy it. I did enjoy just cause 4 it did some things better then just cause 3 but also did some things worse. In the end I had more fun in Just Cause 3 then I did in 4.

The reason for this is simple. JC4 had less development time between JC3. It was rushed out. So a lot of gameplay got left out.

Just cause 3 is so nostalgic for me. Especially raising the flag after liberating a city and then getting all the rewards and unlocks.

Just Cause 4 was really confusing at first. I didn't understand the region takeover system or the tether mods. I liked Just Cause 3 more, but Just Cause 4 isn't as bad as people say. Also, about the vehicle handling thing, I think they did it to make people want to use the wing suit and parachute more.
I liked it. I wish It was longer. I miss my mechs and shit from three. Also I liked the Bavarium wingsuit more. I hope the dlcs come out really soon.

@@CharlesVanexX dosent seem like it. But I've played just cause 3 in 2016 and replayed it in July 2019 and it's much better than JC4 (I think I played that in early 2020) and the story is crap. I'm able to do the last mission before doing the pulling tether side mission where the dictator is still described as alive

Same. I once spent a real-life day trying to kill all of the soldiers outside of big city on the south-east of the map, only to realize that's not how you liberate the city.
I miss the expansion pack where your wing suit had guns and thrusters in JC3. That was so fun. Honestly it was better.
thruster missile wingsuit is in jc4 with the deluxe pack, and 3 expansion packs are coming eventually
I actually hated the thruster wingsuit but the mech DLC was fire!
They removed mechs :/ which i hate but other then that, the game is fun

The new base takeover system ruined this for me. Destroying shit and filling up a bar was much more satisfying than driving through a ring at x speed.

Also is it just me, or do the main cities in 4 look terrible. They look so fake. Di Ravello City in 3 was really nice, but a bit small. In 4, the big cities are huge but have like 3 buildings in them with massive blank spaces in between.

My main complaint is the lack of weapons, where’s the side arms, duel wilding handguns and such, I do t want to just have a rocket launcher and an adult rifle which both have a small bit of ammo. Who else agrees?
I’m also very happy that the Professional didn’t just say the graphics were bad, he actually had valid points.

Yes, it would have been better if they had added more weapons but I liked that you weren't limited to one of each type instead you could pick any two weapons to use.
This is the same thing that happened with GTA 5 when it first came out if we are only talking about single player and not the online portion. They did improve a lot of things that past GTA games had but it lacks many features that made the older games more likable.

I really want jc5 to have a sort of tactical warfare feature, where if you liberate a military base, you will get support from there. That would make you think in which order to best liberate settlements.

For a person that played JC2 and JC3, i loved basically everything about JC2, amazing everything, then somehow in JC3 they made it like 5x better. Wingsuit was amazing, all DLCs were epic, enjoyed the challenges, liberation and (of course) destruction
I found fun out of just cause 4 but nowhere near as much as I did in just cause 3 mainly because I enjoyed the town snd base liberations in just cause 3 alot.
Marcus Gehrmann town/base liberations, for me, were as important as the core movement mechanics in the game.

I wanted to finish the campaign before stating my thoughts. I'm also writing on my laptop because I have a lot to say about this game. First off...wonderful review! I love you actually made points, pros and cons, in comparison to JC3.
JC3 was my first JC game I'd ever played and I loved the shit out of it!! So I could not wait to play JC4. Bought it and was incredibly underwhelmed by the graphics. So much so I stopped playing 20 minutes in and didn't play it for like 6 months. Finally got around to playing it after I read there were improvements to the game like lighting and graphics. Overall, I like the map and the different biomes more in JC4 than in JC3. But that's about it.
Taking away the liberation of the cities is the biggest downfall to JC4. I love completely clearing areas and I hate how this game, soon as you clear it, it just repopulates all the explosives. Like..what was the point? Speaking of which, JC3 was focused around blowing shit up. This game doesn't give two shits about that. Yes you need to explode shit to earn Chaos points but you can easily fill up a bar just by getting in a firefight in the middle of a field blowing up vehicles. You don't feel a sense of satisfaction after about 4 base takeovers..in fact it feels more like a chore. Then you each base takeover, you have to follow an irritating narrative that typically has you following and covering an AI. Every base clearing felt like a fucking chore and it got super boring. Borderline I wanted to quit the game.
Villains in this game are a joke. Gabriella was hyped in the trailers to be this villain you didn't want to mess with and the Black Hand were even stronger than before. Gabriella is barely in it...BARELY...and the Black Hand are just as easy to take out as they were in JC3. Least Di Ravello was a more menacing villain and each city you liberated felt good cause you knew you were pissing him off. Also another thing hyped that was pretty underwhelming was the weather effects. The sandstorm and the lighting storm were in one place and never roamed the area. The tornado did roam but I didn't find it as destructive as the trailers made it out to be. Then ***SPOILERS*** you overtake the bases that control these weather events and you get prompted that you can control those weather events...but ONLY in those bases. You can't start a weather event anywhere you want. Stupid. Wasteful.
The mods in JC3 were better constructed, utilized, and more useful. The balloons were worthless as was the boosters. Much better utilized in JC3. The tether wasn't as much fun as it was in JC3. Not having the remote detonators like in JC3 was another big setback to this game. Very disappointing. As well as not having grenades. And as pointed out, the challenges were a joke in this game too. Much better constructed in JC3 as it took nearly the entire campaign to unlock all mods to your arsenal. Whereas, I gained all the mods before I left the jungle terrain and then didn't do any of them in the grasslands or desert terrain.
Lastly, the DLC to JC4 does not look as good as the Mech, Naval, and Aerial DLC that was in JC3. To be honest, I'm probably going to uninstall JC4 and never pick it up again. Just keep replaying JC3.
I know I'm missing things (lack of destructible bridges, huge gorgeous map but empty, etc) but I think y'all catch my drift.
Controls are wtf, graphics underwhelming, story is lacking, base capturing is not nearly as fun, barely any destructible bridges. 60 pounds wasted.

I own the entire just cause series and i have a nuetral feeling with jc4, my favorite is jc2 and jc3 is my second favorite, and jc1 is ok
The best thing in just cause 3 was liberating the base with the nuke before disabling it so u could get the cargo plane earlier

I was pretty upset seeing how the game gave us two antagonists and did barely much with either of them especially with Gabriela who made my excited to play the story mode only to be let down to find out we only have a few encounters. I also really dislike the downgrade with destruction in 4 especially with the bridges like we can't destroy concrete now???? What a big disappointment.

Totally agree with this. Trailers made me think Gabriela was the villain but it was actually Oscar Espinosa. I saw him in like 2 cutscenes and never developed any resentment against him because he was just, so mundane.
Are you planning on doing more money guides? I love them. When I get bored I do other money guides and are you doing money guides based on the double money events? Keep it up.

This was very helpful, I had heared mixed things about 4 but after this review I will pick it up. I’m exited to play it after I finish just cause 3. It might not be as good as 3 but it will be unique and fun.
In my opinion (with respect to yours) JC4 is very underdeveloped in the aspect of the game where they thought they could rush (water, general terrain) to increase the quality of weather physics. They have gotten too indulged on the weather system that they decided to downgrade many elements, the destruction is even turned down a notch, I personally would go back to JC2 of 3.
For the record im not writing a hate comment I just wanted to give you my feedback. Espinosa was not a dictator or an oppressor, in fact he was in the eyes of the people of Solis their liberator who tricked them into thinking that he would bring a solution to the problem that HE caused. I think that just cause 3 was missing the part where you have to explore the areas of the map in order to progress in the story. Also since Espinosa wasnt a dictator or a oppressor I dont think there should have been any town liberations, of course the developers could have made something similar. I think that just cause 4 liberation tactics were better since the liberation methods seemed less repetitive and every mission was a little different. I'm not completely sure if what I said about Espinosa was true but that's what j gathered from the dialogs in the story.
You say it has a lot things to do, but it only really has story missions and small challenges like "drive at a certain speed through a checkpoint" and has no base liberations or side missions or anything. Just Cause 2 and 3 had more.

Glad I found this. I played 2 as my first one, finally got a ps4 to play 3 on. Miss the range of huge cities with skyscrapers from 2, but love the mass mayhem I can cause. Looks like I won’t enjoy 4 as much.
Solid review. Agree with majority of everything. Hopefully the dlc will add some of the things it should have had. After no mans sky update revivals I would hope they try their best to deliver

I feel like just cause 4 is way better. the world feels a lot more big, vibrant, vegetated and aesthetically nice. the enemies add more pressure to you in combat. I had some issues dealing with the railgun dudes, shield guys and snipers (i suck, haha) the story was in it's own way different, but I think that both games come in at a tie on what's better. the AR scan, weather events, secondary fire and radio are really nice additions that add some more enjoyment or convenience to your session. The villian sucks, I agree. The story was short, but was somewhat longer than JC3. There were missions you had to do to unlock operations for each biomes weather event so you could liberate the bases, disable that weather event, or enable it at any time (because taking it away after you took the base would be really stupid)
I kind of like the removal of liberation, but this applies more to the military bases. The chaos objects gave the bases a... well, military feel. And getting rid of them just kinda sucked. I feel like liberating the towns could've maybe stayed, but in a different way. But there's so many civilian establishments scattered across Solis, going to liberate each and every one like in JC3 would get boring. I don't really care for the challenges. When I play JC, it's just to let my imagination and curiousity do things, when I got bored, I'd just start a conflict with the black hand or something
the missions to free bases (not the weather ones) were really old after about the 2nd time you had to protect a hacker, or let izzy download information from a transmitter. and yea. the army of chaos just feels like it could be put to more application. If you could actually take a squad to go with you to a base, to make the environment feel like a literal warzone everywhere would be awesome.
In conclusion, I enjoy JC4 more than I did JC3. i feel like some of these cons might be catered to, or dealt with in later updates, when the DLC's come out, and later updates. Then the game really will be something. It's not so old, so some things won't be present until they're applied in a way that works, and things will improve

I think the main problem is the missions. A lot of just cause missions aren't great, but just cause 4 is always defend this person, or hack this why getting shot at, and 1 shot on you cancels it. It's just isn't fun at all.
Did they fix the random crashes on PC? I uninstalled early on.

most people wont agree with me here but I wish just cause 4 had the same map style as just cause 3 because since there were 3 islands in the map, it gives the boats more of a usage than any other game I know

I think the army of chaos would be better if they had a more “fluid” frontline where when you attack the troops advance or retreat depending on how you do in the battle instead of where you annihilathe the enemy army only for yours to lack any initiative and not advance letting the black hand build up again until you advance the front line. Then when you reach a base or town there is a large battle for the area so it gives your army the game likes to make a big deal about actually worth while.
Really liked what you had to say about the elements that drive the player to w a n t to help innocents and fight the bloody uphill battle because they're motivated, immersed and have some schmuck to unleash hate on 👍
Playing JC4 now for first time....holy sh@t is the Grapple UI a baffling exhibit when you first see it......the main map is a bit odd too 🤔
But yeah, your point on the flat-out need for a defined, reaction-provoking fiend - especially in a game of this size, with other side missions etc you need characters that make an impact AND you need a world that reflects what the villain has done and the consequences the player will face if they don't intervene.....
....especially if your villain is too cool to do much besides say Hi at the start and say Boo at the end 😒 that's kind of weak.....replace kind of with most definitely.
I think that the base liberation in jc4 is a lot more realistic than in jc3 bc in jc3 once you liberate it the enemies just leave and never come back while now its like they are trying to take it back but the army of chaos is holding them back
I would say my big difference with this game and jc4 is i think this game controls so much better. I love the they way it feels but I prefer the liberations in jc3

I completed both games at 100% and in my opinion I’d rather just cause 3 when I’m in the mood to liberate a base or 15, but prefer just cause 4 when I just wanna do stunts with the cargo plane or boats because in just cause 3 the cargo plane really glitched a ton for me, especially when vehicles I park inside would move and blow up as I would fly them around.
I kinda don't like how the removed the military bases and towns because now chaos objects feel like they are just there to be there

There is another problem with no re-oppress feature, they have all these cool enemy types but you only see them in the bases so once you have finished taking over all the bases you don't see the riot shield, the titans, the elites, the super elites, the grenade launchers, the ghosts, the machine gunner and the rpg, all you see is the generic easy unarmoured guy and the sniper and the helicopters. I found that annoying

get the sky fortress DLC in JC3. You can get a wingsuit that has a booster, rockets, and a built in machine gun. You also get to liberate the sky fortress

How come when you complete the jc3 story you still have more to liberate but in ic4 the story finishes the game
When I was playing just cause 4 I thought the problem was with me when the destructions were underwhelming. Like I remembered them being bigger then it was or like I was worse at destroying things than in jc3 but this show something different

Hey i am a ps4 player and today i couldn't search fpr anything or playing gta online at all because somehow when i open the weapon wheel i can't choose the weapon i want with the r3 stick but it forces me to use the touchpad. Does anyone know a fix?
I beat this game around 3 days with long session each day (4-8 Hours), the main mission kind of short for some reason compared to Just Cause 3 and the chaos thingy that you enjoy most from Just cause 2-3 is kind of toned down. you will be happy to see any red equipment that is ready to destroyed but the game doesn't encourage you that much compared to second and third entries of the game, Any red-painted equipment that you destroy will be respawn which is kinda bummer for me.

I haven’t played JC4 because I feel that is a full game compared to jc3. But I had no idea they removed the liberation part of jc3. What were they thinking? They turned a destruction sandbox to a mission destruction only? That’s a shame
