Hi there ; doing well. I also had to stopped uploading videos to get some work done. I just uploaded a parts 1&2 of the firewall and luggage compartment repair.
At 4:13 he smacks it with a hammer. I can't seem to get mine undone that way. He talks about going up top and undoing something but it isn't shown. What is he talking about?
OK 99% of the time you can smack them with a pretty heavy hammer and they will break loose. However, if it won’t break loose like that, you will need to use a ball joint fork. I believe Harbor freight even sells them pretty cheap. I actually show using one in one of my newer videos Removing a front beam off of a standard beetle OK I don’t know what you mean about up top. To remove the ball joint there should be three bolts on top, right where I was hitting. If you don’t mean that, then up higher inside of the trunk, there should be 13 mm nuts to remove the whole strut. So I’m trying to figure out if it was one of those two.
I enjoy your videos i have finally found someone that knows how correctly to repair a vw .I am looking for a correct wiring diagram for my 73 superbeetle sunroof to show the head light switch can u help.
Thank you Peter, I don’t know everything, but I do share what I know how to do. I don’t have a diagram like that on hand. But I would check the samba archives. They have lots there for stuff like that.
Great video. 👍 I’m about to start replacing the control arm bushings on my ‘71 SB, and I heard you mention in this video to mark the camber on the bolts with a chisel… how do I mark it correctly so that i end up with the same (or close to it) alignment of how it was previously? Thank you again.
It You could or would you do a video on a 1973 Super Beetle strut housing and spindle separation and replacement. I have the three bolt ball joint McPherson strut system and the spindle is very well worn...please help
Another great video Slades. Was that a 14mm hex on that arm I remember you saying in another video you used a 14mm for something in the steering if so I need to get one of those too lol 😂 gives me excuses to buy more tools. I’ve always got great enjoyment out of doing suspension work for some reason.
Honestly I can’t remember what size, unless I would go back and watch the video. LOL, I actually have been buying a lot of tools from Lowe’s. Or Home Depot. Harbor freight has some pretty decent shots if you spend on the little bit better of what they have. I don’t know if that even made sense LOL
@@SladesVWBeetle LOL. It’s all good. I need a good bearing race and seal installer I am thinking of getting the Maddox one from Harbor Freight it’s supposed to be the better one. I ordered a guard for my beetle that goes on the front under the handle so if you have to cut it off it won’t damage the paint. I got it also from M&T manufacturing.
That guard at the bottom of the handle is a really good idea in all honesty. Harbor freight sells a nice kit For the race installers. It’s not something you use daily so I think Harbor freight brand would be just fine.
@@SladesVWBeetle yeah I shattered the one I had at work after gosh probably 5 or 6 years of hitting on it lol. I need a good hand impact driver too I liked the Craftsman ones at Lowe’s but don’t know how the quality is on those.
Thank you for your video
This gives me a lot of knowledge as I have my first beetle and having front end problems.
You’re very welcome, and thank you so much for taking the time to leave a comment
Cool Thanks Bro Ive got too do the Same on my 1302 verry soon , Gonna replace them all and Clean and Reco the whole Steering

Nice work with the sunroof. Very detailed explanation.

Just take a chisel and lightly tap it, on both so you’ll put it back on the same way. Also maybe a paint marker instead!
@@SladesVWBeetle Thanks! I’ll do that. I like the idea of painting the control arms in black. I’ll do the same. 👍
Very useful tips! I’m doing this now. What kind of paint did you use to paint the control arms and the front end underneath?
All we need is a car with McPherson struts and a ball joint on the bottom thats the right length and we shoukd be able to swap the hole thing out

can you just melt the bushing to get it out? will it warp the arm or something?
Honestly I never tried that, because I would be concerned about warpage.
are the control arms left and right or they fit on any side ?? thanks
This is next on my list. Did you reuse anything? It appears you did. Do you have a list of things you reuse and a list you had to purchase?
What size is the castle nut that screws onto the swaybar through the control arm? I'm having a hell of a time finding them. Thanks in advance
I am really interested in hearing the answer, and whether you can get them anywhere.
