    Be very careful on what help you accept, because it can negatively affect your ability to sell or live in the property in the future. My sister in law learned this lesson when her grandmother accepted assistance through a grant program tailored to low income seniors and didn't tell anyone. Her grandmother died 3.5 years after the grant was made and the family was left with 2 choices, pay back the grant or loose the house. They even tried to live in the home after her grandmothers death and were ordered to leave since it violated the written contract that the grandmother had with the government that the property had to be resided in by the person granted the grant. In the end they couldn't repay the grant and had no choice but to sell the property. The family ended up having to pay the grant plus fee's and costs associated with the grant from the proceeds of the sale of the house. Lesson learned nothing is free and read everything.

    • @grantchatter
      @grantchatter  ปีที่แล้ว +6

      @lhead7226 Reading every word of a contract is solid advice. In my experience, some funding sources call their dollars "grants", but add other requirements that may or may not be a "normal" grant. I personally cringe when I see "free money" associated with grants, because you have seen that is not the case. Even regular, everyday grants come with contracts and required actions, and they take precious time to complete and manage.

    Tiffany, I've been trying to get help to fix my home for years. In the meantime, my home is getting worse and worse. Water damage is continuing with each storm.
    My house is an adobe and cement construction with wood siding and asphalt roofing. I've lived in my home since I was a teenager. My parents bought the house for me, cash $ deal. I never bought homeowners insurance.
    I'm in my late 50's now. A few years ago, we had a bad hail storm. A few drops started in the ceiling. My husband took ill and could no longer do repairs. I bought roof sealant, climbed up on the roof, and rolled it on. Leaks stopped. Then we had another bad hail storm. More leaks. I rolled sealant on.
    I was pretty much caring for my husband round the clock, and another hail storm tore up a lot of the sealer coating. Leaks started again. This time I couldn't get on the ladder, myself. I got a very long pole and thick roller and sealed what I could reach. Almost got the whole house covered. My husband got worse, memory issues. He moved into a nursing home in Feb. 2020. A month later a storm hit while I was sleeping. The rain got in like a garden hose was on in the attic. I lost curtains, clothing, furniture, my shoes. My 1930's home might have asbestos so everything damaged went in the trash. Mold started in closet. I had no bed now. Bugs got in through cracks that formed in the adobe walls. I had bites on me from bugs. Moved into my van in the driveway. Paid Orkin to spray my home on regular contract basis.
    With no insurance, I went to my bank for a loan to do repairs. Didn't qualify due to lack of income. Husband and I lived off his retirement pension. I was ill, seeing my own doctor and afraid of freezing in my car. Banker told me to try the housing authority. They said fill this form, and MAKE SURE YOU HAVE YOUR HOME INSURANCE POLICY INFO.
    I said I don't have any. They said find some. Insurance companies said fix the house then we can sell you a policy. I told them I need a policy TO FIX THE HOUSE.
    Almost a year living in my driveway, a social worker told me to fill the form's anyway. She had a nurse come by, leave new forms from the housing authority. I filled them in. The nurse picked them up and dropped them off at the housing authority. I almost froze one day. I tried paying people to fix some holes, put more sealer on the roof. Bugs were terrible. I'm allergic to the bites. Only went in the house to access the bathroom. Ended up with sepsis from a scratch that got infected. Was put in the hospital then physical therapy & rehab for a month. Talked to many social workers. Found a small apt a block from my husband, rented that 4 mos, the expense was high and I was drowning in debt, told to submit a rental assistance voucher at the housing authority. I did and it was approved, but I was put on a two year waiting list. Landlord sold the apt building and nursing home. Moved my husband to another nursing home, far away, moved myself to an apt 2 miles from him. One mo later I moved out. No money, heavy in debt, back to my driveway, never received a grant, a loan, still can't find a homeowners policy, my house roof is starting to cave in over the kitchen. I'm still patching holes so I can use the bathroom. Still pay the utilities every mo.
    Can't sell because my elderly mother, who lives next door, won't move out of her tiny home. Can't abandon her, plus she gets water and phone service from my home. I tried sleeping in a chair in her living room a few nights during sub zero temps. Too painful for my bad back. No room for me there, barely enough for her.
    There is NO HELP from the govt. because of the home insurance requirements. Getting hard to open the front door now, due to the roof condition, and a heavy winter is predicted for this year. I may freeze living outside, but I have nowhere else to go.
    I don't have work income due to my health, or enough money from my husband's pension to fix the house. Barely have enough to eat and pay gas to go visit my husband, and keep doctor appts. There is NO help. Waiting list on rental voucher is two years long, and rentals are expensive, beyond my ability to pay. Pastor from church told me there's a cold weather shelter, but it's co-ed, many people have health issues, and he said I was safer in my own driveway, in my car.
    The program that you talk about that has volunteers that fix homes, had no offices in my state. Even if a person says I can come by and work on your house, I have no money for materials.
    TV shows about home repairs don't fix people's homes for free. So again, unless several years pass and I'm older to qualify for one govt grant that's for people over 62, there's nothing available for my situation.

      Liz, what state are you in? I applied at the united states department of agriculture and looked under "Home Repairs". they are free to you and all you do is call your county office and they will give you the person who has the grants. You can get those free grants for home repairs. My heating and air went out and i had no money for a $8,000 new HVAC system and my kids were cold in the winter. We had no heat. I called them and they contacted a local HVAC company in my town and everything was paid by the grants. They also said they do roofs, windows and other repairs for free. Its available but the government just doesn't advertise it so people dont know where to look. DOn't give up, Liz. You can have your entire house remodeled and all for free by those grants. Praying for you

      @grantchatter  ปีที่แล้ว +4

      @LizCastro I've been thinking about options while at work today (I work on Grant Chatter after work). I will list several options, and hopefully one or more will work. (1) Call the phone number 211 to see if there are any other local options. (2) The option that Dreams1997 suggested is limited to people over 62 and grants max out at $10,000. But maybe use that option for your mother's home to be repaired, including a bed for you, and move in there. The link for more information is www.rd.usda.gov/programs-services/single-family-housing-programs/single-family-housing-repair-loans-grants (3) Try www.benefits.gov/, to see if there are options for you there. (4) Convince your mother to move with you to affordable senior housing. I know, that's easier said than done, but here is a link with more information, www.assisted-living-directory.com/content/low-income-senior-housing/ (5) This one is a tough one, so I left it to last. I'm surprised your pastor recommended that you sleep in your car. In my church experience, the members come together to help another member who is struggling. Maybe change churches to one that has a ministry to help the poor in the area?

    Rebuilding together San Diego a Diane Hutchinson said to me I should sell my long time home and move into senior complex, so disturbing to me. She said had no roof program but I saw on CBS news that same month she repaired a new roof on an entire home roof. I was asking for a 400 sq ft. Garage roof that has caused me over 70 plus to have neck, back, leg injuries lugging heavy water. I am alone, only income social security! This agency did not even help with driveway cracks that are dangerous, not broken window, nor garage large hole in garage car door where pests gain entry scaring me! Skunks in area, Fox chayotes, in my city!
    I needed assistance of emergency, did not even help with a tarp to aid the situation. This needs investigation. I am low income!
