This video came up in my feed today. I've never watched any of your videos before but I love block scheduling so I clicked on this. Surprise, surprise! Your day is almost exactly like mine except for a few exemptions. My kids are older (15, 12, and 10) but we have followed a very similar routine for years!
Thanks is for sharing! I have six kids and my block schedule is very similar. We have tweaked it over the past ten years of homeschooling and this seems to be the most natural/efficient flow to our day.
So helpful! I have 3 work from home side jobs that I juggle along with homeschool. I like how one block you focus more on work and self care and the other block is more chore related. I tend to get so overwhelmed not knowing what I should give my attention to in regards to work and chores. but I think this would help, to dedicate certain activities to each block. Thanks!
This is bringing back so many memories of being homeschooled as a kid! Almost the same schedule I had. I'd love to homeschool my future kids if given the chance
You saying that you just skip things if you don't get to them...TRULY...took a load off of me. I'm prepping 3 different age groups each night because if I don't, I'll die of stress. And I have been making sure not to miss a single thing and it's killing me! (Also have 5). Thank you so much for reminding me that it's okay not to be perfect
Thanks for the peek into your routine! I showed the bit about bedtime to my kids because they all go to bed around 8:30 here - though we let the 10 year old have lights out at 10. They were suitably impressed.
Bedtime is definitely not always smooth, and I often have to go back and tell them to stop talking or get back in bed. 😊 just the other night, I found my oldest daughter still up at 9:30 playing with LEGO by the light of her alarm clock 😂
Hi! My name is Laura and I've been watching your videos for the past couple months. I just wanted to say you're very uplifting to me. :) You inspire me to be a better mom.
I’m a first time homeschooler mom and this has been the best example of a routine that will work for our family as well! Great video ❤️ I’m Nervous, but excited!
I’m so glad! Don’t be nervous! You’ve got this ❤️ Lower your expectations, and don’t expect it to look perfect. Every day is messy and has some sort of challenge, but be patient with yourself and with your child, and enjoy the process of learning at home. It really is beautiful!
Love this! Sounds similar to my days. I really need to workout though. You are an inspiration. I’d love a grwm vlog along with links to your makeup. You look dazzling
Busy, busy! It’s awesome that you have the system set up like you do. It’s great for both you and the kiddos. You all can know what to expect on most days. I didn’t call them blocks of time but did have a system when mine were young (b/4 school) and even as they began school. Nighttime was crucial to me. You do a great job including them in jobs and that was something I didn’t stick to bc I was to particular. I have regrets since I didn’t do them or myself any favors. I am better about it when we have the grands that spend the night with us. I love the scarf! It looks so pretty on you.
Ohhhh mama! You are SO organized! I also have a set time that my kiddos can leave their rooms... Even as they are older! I need my morning workout and my morning Bible time before the day begins! 😀 Loved hearing what your daily block schedule typically looks like!
Haha honestly, I don’t know how I’d get anything done if I wasn’t organized! I feel like it’s essential 😊 Yes, love having the set time...they’re allowed to play quietly in their rooms, but I just need that quiet time before they all get up!
Thank you for this! Our day goes almost the same way and sometimes I feel like I’m not doing enough school. 3-5 is also my least fav time 😂 and I love my rest time after lunch too where I can be “off” and not feel like I need to clean or teach kids. Everyone deserves a little break. I have a kindergartener and preschooler so I’m still trying to find my groove in homeschooling and what works. I needed this reassurance to know that I don’t need to be schooling ALL day long. Just during those blocks ❤️
Newly subscribed- just found your channel through Megan Fox! So thankful I Did! I didn’t realize I unintentionally block schedule haha and it was so nice to hear that so many of those blocks that are similar to mine are incredibly busy just as they are for me! ❤️ I look forward to getting to see your other videos!
Our block schedules are almost exactly the same! The exception being I don’t work out in the mornings...I want the maximum amount of minutes possible for coffee and reading then!! Oh and same with the laundry after 7pm, Ontario cheap rate time! 👊🏻😆
Haha I get it!!! I struggle so much with what to do in those first minutes before the kids are up, but I really enjoy my workouts. Maybe one day I’ll start getting up at 5 😝
Thanks for sharing this! I’m starting our homeschool this September, so I’m still trying to wrap my mind around what the day to day will look like. I definitely think a block schedule will work for me too! Btw, just started following you and so cool that we are both in Ontario! 😊
Hi Julie, I'd love to know how many hours you roughly spend on your youtube channel (video planning, filming, editing, creating thumbnails, replying to comments etc) per week and whether you ever feel that doing youtube takes your time away from being with the kids? x
I’m actually putting a video up all about this in a couple of weeks 😊 Does it take away time from being with the kids? Really no...almost all of it is done when they’re having quiet time or after they go to bed. Even for what I do when they’re up, I don’t feel bad about it, because if I wasn’t doing it, I’d probably be spending that time on a different hobby. 😊
@@mamatofive1 I'm looking forward to that video. I know you've done a video about youtube before but would love to hear your updated version. Also, do you write scripts for your sit down videos and do you rely on youtube for additional income? Thanks x
The headband/scarf looks so nice on you! We kind of move about our day in a similar block type schedule but it’s definitely less structured and I would love to make it more so. This is helpful! What age did you start piano with your kids? I would love to incorporate that into our homeschool early.
I got my degree as a piano teacher, and always told potential clients that 7 was a good age! I definitely taught younger too, but if they’re a fluent reader before starting, and know basic math, it makes it SO much easier. So that’s what age we started with our kids as well 😊
Thanks so much, Julie! Helpful video for sure 😊 Wondering if you guys do a morning basket to start off your school time or do you just get right into your other subjects?
Yes! We currently have a basket full of our Bible curriculum, our read aloud, and then we do our looping basket too (looping history, geography, and science). Then we have a break, then they get into math/writing, etc. 😊
Loved hearing your daily flow routine! As of lately I have been really strict with waking up at 6am or earlier but gosh my 20 month old is such an early riser. He is up by 6-6:30am. That is pretty typical for young children. Have your kids ever been like that? And if so how did you get them to sleep in until 7am? At least I know it won’t last forever and is just a season. But I really want my morning hour to pray and read the word! 😅
Yes!! Elijah was up at 6 EVERY morning for years. Now I think we just have later nights with activities, church, etc. And because all of the kids share rooms, they’re almost never asleep before 8. It’s usually closer to 9 because they stay up and talk, so that’s just moved the routine so that they sleep in later. He’s probably almost at the age where you could get an alarm clock that turns green at 7:00, and teach him that that’s when he can get out of bed. (I know he’d still be a bit young for that concept!) That made a big difference for our kids too. Knowing that they couldn’t come out of their rooms til 7 almost made them subconsciously sleep later, since they knew that they couldn’t get up yet anyways. It just made it boring to wake up that early if that makes sense lol
Mama to Five That makes sense! I heard about those alarm clocks, they sound so cool. I will get one of those when my youngest son is a bit older haha. I need to just get up at 5am and go to bed at 9:30pm 😆
Yes I need to do a video on screen time 😊 Free time is usually just play time. They get screen time on weekends and rainy days for sure, and occasionally on a regular week day...they played outside today for 2 hours, so I figured that deserved an hour of shows 😊
Thank you! If I don't know how to play the piano, would this work with the teacher resources? Or do I need to know how to play in order to teach it at home with this program?
You're so organized! How do you decide on extra-curricular so with so many children? As mine get older, I keep thinking how we may lose afternoons/evenings at home because we will be trekking here or there.
Yes it gets so busy! 😩 Recently we’ve been doing the girls - gymnastics in the fall/winter, boys - baseball in the spring/summer. That’s all we have time for! We often do swimming lessons as well, but I get them all in on the same day. Even that feels like a lot! 😊
Aww I totally know the feeling. As they’ve gotten older and more independent, they can go outside and give me that same “break” inside. If we do have times where they watch more, then they ask for it more..it’s a vicious cycle 😂 So we typically stick to only rainy days or weekends.
Yes! Goals! My kids are 5, 4, 2 and 1 and I struggle with TV so much! We have just started block scheduling and it’s changing our lives! I have faith that we’ll be able to cut back on TV as we go along. Right now I allow my two biggest a 2 hour block of tv while my 2 year old naps. It’s sanity for all of us at the moment but I want to reduce it further. You’re always an encouragement Julie!
I like the concept but I'm not sure I'll try this. It sounds monotonous and drudgery. Do you guys do anything like road trips or visits to museums or activities outside like karate or something like that?

It’s so helpful in figuring out my day 😊 I’m sure you’d find the same!

Yes!! Especially in those early years, a day’s school work really doesn’t take long 😊
I have only 2 kids and I feel overwhelmed and tired. Hats off to handling 5 kids. Mobile is taking my time literally most of the time. 😥😥

Yay! Welcome!! 👋🏻 incredibly busy - YES! That’s a good way to describe it. If I wasn’t organized with time blocks, I feel like we’d get nothing done!
Thanks for this! I am trying hard to adopt a more predictable daily routine. This is super helpful! ❤
Also... Please share where you got your headband. I can't find a good one that doesn't slip off my head all day.

Curious what the 'free time' is for the kiddos. Do you have screen time for them or none at all. Would love a video on that.

Pretty much sounds like our day.
How do the kids do with staying up a little later than each other? I feel like mine would cry and complain 🙈
They do very well with it...they know they’re staying up later than the child younger than them, so it all evens out 😊
What books do you use for piano lessons?
Faber’s book “Piano Adventures” 😊
Thank you! If I don't know how to play the piano, would this work with the teacher resources? Or do I need to know how to play in order to teach it at home with this program?
If we have an extra 15 or so minutes at night, we watch Dude Perfect too 😂 kids love it
