    If you used the boardmans for the front and just drill a 3/4 hole in the back for the entrance. You can always use #8 hardware cloth to close the hole if you ever needed too ... the bees won’t care which end is the front or back. Good video! Thanks for sharing.

      This idea makes the most sense, and is very easy. Could use the round plastic entrance disc that spin with various openings over the hole you drill.

    I stopped using Boardman feeders back in 1974 after 2 years of use. I use the internal feeder you showed first for my 5 and 10 frame hives and I haven't had a moments trouble from them. The Boardman feeders on the other hand took turns leaking and attracting ants. Thank you for the video.

    I think putting the feeder in the back is a great idea! As I contemplate using two frame mating nuc's this season I have thought putting the feeder in the back makes a lot of sense. I'm glad someone else has the same idea.

    Glad i saw this video and read the comments.... building several 2 frame mini nics next week...lots if good idead but im just going to leave the back open like the front entrance abd use boardman feeders...will cut a piece of wood to use as entrance blocker when feeder isnt in use...thanks for the idea...cost nothing really if you are building the nucs this way...again thanks for your ideas.

    I started using the small gaderaide bottles drilled #56 holes in lid.used 1/12" forsnter bit in cover .I got that idea from ( just bee cuz ) youtube channel. I also put 5/8" holes front and back under the hand holes 3 each end and 2 in the bottom board ventilation is a must in small boxes. I use #8 wire over the holes .i all use the small entrance disc on front .my thought is small nest to big an opening there harder to guard on robbing . I also get a decent 2x4x8 and rip it to 1/2" cut at 91/2" pieces and they are the front and back panels from bottom board to the top where the cleats are put on for handles make a nice clean frame rest. Just my technique not dogging you at all .Nice to share with others theres many ways to skin a cat.

    How about dry sugar in that top box instead of all the trays and stuff. Pour it in and spray it with some water?
    Also, what about a more ladder shape to the access to the top trough.
    The other thing I have thought about with the 2 frames is why not make them 3 and use the other space for a frame feeder?

      Reasonably Intelligent Maker - that sounds like the mountain camp method that works for some beekeepers. Like I always say, there are many ways to do things with beekeeping. I only show you a way and one that works for me. Thanks for your comment. Also for the 2 frame to 3. That is possible to do also. Make a few and see how it works. From what I believe, the 2 frame hives are a new concept and I am riding that bandwagon and giving them a try also.

      @@6acrefarmstead224 I thought you said "If you have other ideas post them in the comments below." So I did. :) I am in research mode this season, so everything is fair game. I will be watching to see how well these 2 framers work. The fact that they work in GA for BB doesn't surprise me. But we can't all live in GA. :)

    I’m a little late but putting the jar in the back is a good idea if you want to continue using them. Have you thought about building a three frame box and using a frame feeder?

  • @StephenBiggers

    I find the miller style hive top feeder without screen works the best. I use a floating plank structure and never have any deed bees. There is more space for them to feed and without screen you can move bees out of the feeder easily. Because it is split into 2 sides you can fill one with syrup and the other with pollen sub or patty.

    I use Davids two frame mating nucs also and did not care for the fat beemans style of feeder as well so I removed the pan and drilled a 70mm hole in the bottom of the feeder and put in a pint jar with feed holes in the lid (works fine) I now make all of the feeders that way.

    I also use the 1/12 yellow plug mannlake sells to plug hole if not feeding.

    I had tried to tape off that bottle feeder, unless that hive is perfectly level, it's worthless. I threw em all away. I use through the cover feeder bottles instead.

    What about a boardman feeder in the bottom existing slot and a 7/8” entrance hole drilled above the old entrance about an inch or so

  • @JamesMartin-r7r
    @JamesMartin-r7r 8 หลายเดือนก่อน

    I cut a hole in the lid of mine that jar lid fits in and feed from the top

  • @johnward3946
    @johnward3946 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    Why couldn’t you drill a hole in the top and install a quart mason jar feeder? Seems simple enough, I’ve got 30 of the 2 frame mating nucs and that’s my plan? 🤷‍♂️

    • @martyking6942
      @martyking6942 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yes, that will work just fine but I like my interior feeders because all I have to do is lift the outer cover, fill the container, put the cover back on and I'm gone in 10 seconds. The bees probably don't even know what happened.

    • @johnward3946
      @johnward3946 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Marty King great but if you had a top feeder no need in lifting the cover, just replace empty mason jar feeder and you’re done? 🤷‍♂️

    • @6acrefarmstead224

      I could drill the hole (I have the bit from making my mini nucs) but with these, I am really considering the rear mounted boardman which I have always had really good luck with. I also could try both methods and see how well the telescoping cover feeding works. As for an internal frame feeder, I want that second wav frame for the bees to work on and help hold the queens longer. I do own two internal frame feeders but I only use one of them for my observation hive. The other is a spare. Thank you for your comments!

      6 Acre Farmstead never had any luck with frame feeders to many dead bees for me and I’ve tried everything. I used Boardman feeders before with great luck but always worried about robbing issues. I like the mason jar top feeders with buckets to cover the feeders either way good luck 🍀

      @martyking6942 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@6acrefarmstead224 the internal feeder that I use is the top mounted. I don't lose bees to drowning with the top mounted feeder. The frame feeders kill lots of bees.

    Where do you find half gallon small mouth jars

    • @6acrefarmstead224
      @6acrefarmstead224  ปีที่แล้ว

      A few different places. I found them on Facebook marketplace listings, yard sales and the best bet is asking some of the older folks. Ask around and have them check their cellars. They probably aren't any good for canning purposes but will work for this.

    why not just put a hole for a mason on top like a 10 frame I do that and use masons for 10 5 2 frame box

      Well for me personally, I have this mindset to try and not have a roof penetration to feed. I am glad you have a system that works for you and I appreciate your comment. I made an additional video where I decided to go with the Boardman feeder which I really do like and did a rear slot in the 2 frame box for it to fit in. Thanks for watching and commenting.

    I recall that you have two frame queen castles. If you still have them, is are 2 frame nucs beneficial? I'll be using these 3 frame queen castles this year with jar feeders on top millerbeesupply.com/images/queen%20castle.jpg
