Dave your generous knowledge about nuc multiplying must be making a huge difference in the bee world. This girl will be heading to the hardware store with the nuc measurements. Very inspiring stuff
Hi Dave, I have a lot of problems with bees absconding from two frame boxes,I'm in southern Indiana. Any suggestions as to why they abscond. What can I do to encourage them staying?
Ended up with a small swarm (no queen) and a small cut out. Merged them and added a full frame of brood and honey. Unbelievable how fast it has got going. Thanks for your help.
Very high( weed ) and curious on how he doesn’t get stung what’s so ever and also has he ever killed any bees by accident when sliding those slabs into the mini boxes?
Michael LaCroix I have yet to find a way to do a hive check or move bees without killing some... but if there were no beekeepers, honeybees around the world would likely be in serious jeopardy at this moment in history
David, can you use 10 frame boxes with frame baffles (dummy boards) to get the same effect as the "2 frame mini nuc"? Or even a 10 or 5 frame box baffled down to a 2 frame and remove the baffles as the nuc increases in size? I have also wondered about using the plastic frame feeder to crowd up the colony. Would you please expound and give us your opinion.
Boards will have to fit tight top, bottom, and sides, so bees in 'each mini' within, don't wander from space to space ! Or Queen will kill any neighbouring 'Queen' in the next section !!! 😱 If they all have opposite entrances, eg Front, Back, Front, Back on x4 mini's within a 10 Frame Box. Also use an ex Clear Feed Bag to place over all top. Bees propolis this tight down under lid. On inspection you can view 'girls' without any buzzing up and out ! 😉
Thank you so much videos, please continue. I keep learning from you. I work with 8 frames and this is the first year. I have not added any super or another deep on top but it’s time I think. Having said that here in California we have mild winter and summer. Wondering if May is right time to this?
What’s the best way to prevent them from being robbed out? I did a walk away split in the same yard in a 5 frame. I reduced the entrance to 3/4” wide. It got completely robbed out. They even ate all the eggs and larvae and the capped brood was abandoned.
David I have a question. Is it possible to have a frame with screen wire on it to basically divide the hive in half and have 2 queens in the same box but divided
@@davidhaught84 Thanks for the understanding. I have 7 5 frame nucs coming this spring and wanting to increase those into a few more and this looks like the way to get started with my increase. I am thinking about taking one good frame of brood from 4 of the 7 nucs to create 4 walk away splits and using the other 3 nucs to build up as production hives, using brood frames produced from the two frame nucs to build up the production hives to start with then start growing some 4 over 4 double nucs for overwintering. Any thought or advise would be greatly appreciated.
I was watching the queen mating video and at 7.17 there looks like the queen had just returned back home, she lands on the top of the old box for a moment before flying off again !!
Half weight of White Sugar to Half Weight of tepid Water. Mix until fully dissolved. In metic x1 Kg Dry = x1000ml (1Litre) Liquid. So 500g Sugar in 500ml of water = Bee Syrup to build up Wax building properties (That 1 : 1 Syrup above !) 2 : 1 Syrup would be eg 1kg Sugar to 500ml water (This 2 : 1 is for bees to increase Brood rearing quickly, eg end of season before winter. Or after a Split etc... ) Go feed your Bees... 🐝
You hang the new Queen cage in the hive. The little cage has a candy plug, or marshmallow plugging the entrance to the Queen. By time they chew through the plug they will accept her. Most of the time, sometimes they could kill her, bit not often.
Im curious and want to know if 1 full deep frame of nurse bees with eggs, larvae and pollen and honey is actually plenty of resources to raise good well healthy queens for open mating and establishing a strong healthy hive? Ive heard pro and con of a minimum amount of resources vs a maximum amount of resources raising queens.
I have no idea what hes talking about, but here I am, subscribing to his channel and enjoying videos
He’s expanding is bees from one hive to three hives. Ok

I dont even like bees but your channel is so soothing
Most practical informative day in/day out bee keeping channel on TH-cam.

Looks like you build your own minis are there plans somewhere I am interested in doing this this looks great

Nearly always, some bees are killed in the process of checking/expanding/separating.
Strive4impact you’d think there’d be safer way of doing it... ( I’m not snow flaking thanks for answering)

The bees accept him as their god.
Yes you can hear when he puts the slabs in a few bees are being crushed
Ah the old two frame, three box, four step split. lol

It is easy to use 10 frames box and convert it to 2 frameq or 3 you just need polystyrene and cut it to fill the space left by removing the frames
What’s the best way to prevent them from being robbed ? Thanks !!
You’re right. I made several of these mating nucs and love em. Thanks
Do you use 1/2” or 3/4” advantech for your boxes?
Could you make a video about how to make mini mate nuks
Great idea. How many mini nucs can you get out of a 4x8 sheet?
Barnyard Bees thanks bud. I got 5 out of one. Not sure on how to cut the plywood
How do you get 8? I have 2 sheets of advantech ordered and was trying to get the most out of it
@@bryanheiman5300, You can plug in the dimensions on this website to get your cut list. cutlistoptimizer.com/
What thickness plywood are you using inside the box as a frame rest?

once you remove mated queen from mating Nuc,, does she need to be in a Queen cage until the bees accept her?
David I have a question. Is it possible to have a frame with screen wire on it to basically divide the hive in half and have 2 queens in the same box but divided
Google queen castle
These videos are awesome, I I love them they’re amazing🐝🐝🐝😊
How do you handle their hive without being stung a bunch?
When you do your walk away splits do you put an empty frame in or foundation in the second position?

David- thanks for the video. Just a question from a beginner.. how would you introduce a virgin queen into one of the mating nucs? Thanks!
Hi, could you please tell us at what ratio you mix your feed syrup? 50/50?
Half weight of White Sugar to Half Weight of tepid Water. Mix until fully dissolved.
In metic x1 Kg Dry = x1000ml (1Litre) Liquid.
So 500g Sugar in 500ml of water = Bee Syrup to build up Wax building properties

2 : 1 Syrup would be eg
1kg Sugar to 500ml water
(This 2 : 1 is for bees to increase Brood rearing quickly, eg end of season before winter. Or after a Split etc... )

My Grandfather is a Bee keeper and just gotten his new queen. I was wondering how you can show the males to the new queen?
You hang the new Queen cage in the hive. The little cage has a candy plug, or marshmallow plugging the entrance to the Queen. By time they chew through the plug they will accept her. Most of the time, sometimes they could kill her, bit not often.
Hey David, what is the dimensions for the barn yard bees rapid feeder? Some look to be 8 frame in size. The box
am using these to expand my apiary this year
How can I get Queens and feeders from you? I’m trying to diversify some splits I live in Antioch, California, shipping cost?
I don't know if you know what a yin yang is but you got bees coming out of it.
Thanks for the dimensions
Thanks, for the video...let's watch them through the fall. Eggs, queen cells, or virgin queens. Just a thought.
Good Idea Dave.
Great video I have watched it before. Get more information each time. Thanks
is there a reason you use 3/4 and not 1/2
Half inch moves to much, disrupts bee space. That is weather resistant composite plywood called Advantech.

Good Stuff! Thanks for sharing
One of your videos just blew up
*I need some mini nucs.*
Great Video!! Thx David!
Dream Big brother 🙏
I wish that feeder price could get better...
*Sting like a bee🐝*
imo i would have not split that hive into mini nukes. i would have kept it in the nuke and just added a queen to it
This is genius, almost lmbo
tHiS iS aIds
Those bees have lung cancer now 🤣😂
