I was with you there until you started saying that allowing designers to make them in different shapes is advantage over USB - the point of USB is that it's supposed to be universal so there's agreement that we use the same type/shape of connector, at least on the PC side. EDIT: scratch that - that growth rate graph is just beyond saving xD

One question, how do they overcome the most obvious risk, being short circuits when getting close to any ferric or even bare metal surfaces like keys? Also there is a greater risk of ESD damage with exposed connections.
I like the concept, but I can see the old problem of aversion to cross platform/brand standard configuration through these not being patented and licensed out for universal standards compliance like all of the current USB variants.

Why change a system that works? I'm so glad that finally USB has become the quasi standard on mobile device. It used to be a nightmare back then every manufacturer had their own connectors. I don't want to go back. Unless there's a widely used set of standard magnetic connectors, I won't ever buy into these myself. Maybe for a speciality need like rigging up an auto-charger for a drone, yes that looks cool, but is it practical for my everyday life? I don't want to come back to my phone thinking it charged overnight, only to find out that the magnetic connector immediately came loose without me noticing when I laid down the phone last evening. USB connectors have a huge advantage, they are relatively firmly attached, and I like my cables that way.

USB-C is awful, at least as a replacement for USB-A and B etc. It's clearly only designed as a replacement for USB Micro and is only barely better than it.

@@numberlessconglomerate Companies will take the risk to design a new connector when the current iteration of usb c doesn't support their needs. Same reason we got the lightning connector and then the usb c connector. Thinking that isn't going to happen is crazy. How long it will take to switch to the standard is unknown after the decision is made, but they said they will review the standard every 5 years. If lets say phone companies feel they are missing out on adding features because of the old connector they can push for the new one and likely get it revised easily with enough support. Quite frankly its a long time coming, I've got a whole box of cables with various connectors, voltages, and amps. Being able to replace every cable in that box and dc device in my home with one cable is a dream

@@numberlessconglomerate USB has been a standard going back to the late 90's with Win98 and the iMac. By WinXP ('03) it was by far the most common pc peripheral connector. Mini worked for smaller devices but wasn't really meant for daily insertions like charging a cell phone. Micro addressed that much better.

How many times do I need to hear that POGO PINS are so good? THEY ARE NOT.
The very POGO PIN that you keep promoting blindly nearly set my house on fire. The magnet on this pin stuck to a metal piece on my bed, creating a short circuit between the positive and negative poles. It got so hot that the USB adapter and the cable melted, filling my entire room with smoke. Luckily, the house alarm went off, and I got there just in time. If I’d arrived five minutes later, the whole house would have been on fire.
So please, stop going on and on about POGO PINS.

i don’t see these connectors taking over. they have been used by the industry for over 50 years. the main problem with them are that they force you to use a proprietary cable. you lose that cable then you have to order a new one often at an over priced cost or hunt down your spare cable. the advantage of usb are that cables are easier to find because they were originally designed to be a “universal” standard.
usb standards were made to overcome the problems of special pogo pin cables needed. you’re stuck with countless pogo pin cables made for specific devices, …or one or two usb cables which would be compatible with all your devices. again, pogo pin cables are nothing new and have been around longer than usb cables… usb cables came about to solve that problem with proprietry cables.

I have used a better type of mag connector for years now than what you have here. You can get magnetic adapters WITHOUT mechanical moving pins and NO moving parts, easily cleanable with alcohol and qtip. Macs used to use these and the mechanical pins had a high tendency to fail early. I had MS Windows Tablet with similar design as the one on the video. The springy connector pins failed twice in 3 years. Also, If the magnet is on the phone-side adapter, it will pick up metal shavings if you work in that environ, so only suggestion would be keep the mag on the usb end of the cable only with the connecting adapter being regular ferrous metal that is not mangetized.

Most of my devices accept USB-C connectors. I can buy a USB-C cable almost anywhere. The gas station down the street from my house sells them. Also, that USB-C cable can power my phone, my tablet, my laptop, my dashcam, my CD/DVD burner, charge my headset, and do a host of other things. One cable...that's it. Pogo connectors, by design, do not do this. Regardless of their technological advantages, they are a failure from an end-user perspective.

It's true that the physical interfaces aren't ideal for every use and that physical interfaces using pogo pins are better suited for harsh environments. I don't see how that means that the sun is setting on USB. There are 24 pins in a USB-C connector. Has a 24-pin pogo pin connector ever been made?

That lowercase "b" in Mbps & Gbps stands for bits, not Bytes. Remember there are 8 bits in a Byte. Yet somehow you were able to say Gigabits per second properly.

For the people who actually care and wanna break into engineering, I suggest going through the USB-IF documentation for specs and some may go through the VESA spec for display port on usb c.

Who in his right mind thinks POGO pins are good? I can name at least a handful of reasons why they are terrible just off the top of my head. Fire hazards (as @meytimeshki mentioned) and electrical burns are clearly the top two of them, but also they have terrible lifespans. Do you know how fast pogo pins rust? They are electrically charged pieces of metal that are exposed to air, dust and water, and constantly under frictional wear. In short, those things erode crazy fast.
