The Short of the same name went ballistic so it inspired me to have a go at a longer version as some didn’t know what it was about. First I have heard of this and it is an awesome story. Who else would have the balls to do this? He is a hero in several ways... yeah he save the Who which is the best thing ever, but then he is a legend to show people you just have to go for it when it's your time to shine. This is another story for Rock and Roll fame and history for sure. I'm so sad to hear he's no longer with us but damn what a bad ass 19 year old!
I clearly remember when this happened. Sadly, I know Scott has since passed away but what an extraordinary experience that must have been. Pulled out of the audience to fill in for Keith Moon in The Who's heyday. Probably the best rock and roll band at the time. I saw them numerous times including this tour. Lynyrd Skynyrd was the opening band
A dream gig of a lifetime for Mr. Halpern - seeing Pete, John and Roger guiding, encouraging and gelling with Scott really was memorable. Thanks for sharing!
There should be an added category in the R&R Hall of Fame that would have Scot Halpin inducted. That category would include whoever the guy was who turned off Yoko Ono's mic on the Mike Douglas show.
yeah right. we can't even get true rock n rollers in the rock n roll hall of fame let alone rock n rollers who saved the day. but they have no problem getting hip hop and country artists in it. i think it should be abolished.

I do believe Pete when he said he hated touring with The Who. Can you imagine? He's an artist whom any Who fan justly gives lots of allowance for his frankness and sensitivity--and the music. I love this guy and his music. It's meant so much to me.
I had never heard this story until the morning of Thursday, August 13, 2024. What a great moment in the annals of rock 'n' roll history. Bravo to Scot!
''Afterwards, he was taken backstage, along with his friend Mike, joined the band for a drink and snacks, and was given a Who concert jacket, which Halpin said was stolen from him later that night''
Huge thanks for finding and putting up this great piece of rock history. The additional info was excellent to see. Hail Scot Halpin for filling the Giant Moo's Shoes! There isnt enough stuff like this on TH-cam!
It's fun to see how the greats out there keep performing in spite of their obstacles. The way The Who brought Scot on to finish out the show reminds me a little bit of how Stevie Ray Vaughan once changed out a guitar with a broken string in the middle of a tune for a good guitar without missing a beat. These things make legends.
One of the greatest and wackiest moments in all of Rock n Roll history. Scott was my cousin and I was there that night with him. We recently lost him. The band did send him a check for $1,000 afterwards. They told him he saved the show and he really did.
Anyone familiar with Moon's drumkit will know how intimidating those must have been. You did yourself proud Scotty. What an experience, the memory of a (far too short) lifetime.
I can just picture Scot applying to play with another band and they ask if he's got any experience. Well, I played a short set withThe Who. Ever hear of them?
Love ain't for keeping on that album had Leslie West on lead guitar , the local record store guy thought i was nuts when i told him that was on Odds and Sods .
I'm by no means a super fan - although I rate them in my top five or ten of all-time great rock bands - but I had NO idea that footage of this event existed. Amazing!

I’ve seen the first 1-2 minutes on the “30 Years Max RnB” history of the band ( up to at least the mid 90s I believe ) DVD - I didn’t know these extra features were out there. All I know is if I was Scott, I’d be sitting there on Keith’s kit.. - not believing that they saw me raise my hand to begin with- as Pete asked for a “good drummer” never mind trying to show Pete I can do as well as the times I’ve made believe I was Keith at home. Now what ?? Lol - Those guys at work/school will never believe this ! ( no TH-cam back in 1973!) I wonder if they had a way to take a group shot and mail to him to show friends. I always had doubts about this story. It is hard to believe that there was no one in the Who's crew (drum tech maybe?) that could have filled in for Keith.
Once he got over the fear he loosened up. I'd have played the F out of those drums even if it killed me by the end. "I'd die for you to play with The Who"
When given the opportunity this guy Scott would have probably been half keen and half nervous with no rehearsal and getting on someone else's set up is always tricky apart from some minor errors he's done really well
Seems like they were ready for this to happen at some point.. Petes like lll lead you and Roger didnt bat an eye once they heard Scott could play good..like Pete said .. then Pete just turns around and carries on jamming
As a retired musician, lead guitarist, who once had the chance to perform onstage, I can safely say the drummer's post is one of the most difficult. Along with the bass, the drummer sets the foundation of a song, kind of giving signals to the rest of the group where in the song the band already is at certain points in time, and sets most of the accents. Here, a guest musician without proper rehearsal, stands in for a big-name band and its drummer. And beats through to the finish. How difficult can things get for him?
He did a fantastic job considering. Especially as Moon would play lead drums at time and always switching from syncing with John or Pete. If you look at the IoW 1970 concert its fascinating how Moon constantly looks over to John and Pete switching to and fro supporting, filling, leading all the time. I have a short that's done very well 'Keith plays along with the vocals' which shows how gifted he was in the studio. For Scott to even get through Naked Eye, with its changing tempos, would take any drummer alot pr practice to get up to speed, it shows the guy had alot of heart. Thanks for stopping by cheers 👍
