As a student of mathematics, I can attest to the part talking about stress and skills. However, I would argue that the ratio of regret is low because at least 50% of students drop out before they graduate and therefore only those who really get through the process (whether because of wanting and skill or by sheer luck) are counted as satisfied. Unfortunately, the drop-out rate is extremely high because of the extreme expectations.

I went to college for chemistry. In the early 1980's, I took a computer programming class from a small community college in Rock Springs, Wy. I found my passion, and proceeded to learn everything about computers and software that I could find. Many years later, and I'm working with control systems, excellent pay, mentally challenging environment, I'm so much happier than I would have been working in a chem-lab. Best $100.00 I ever spent LOL. Also, the instructor was an Iranian refugee, Ali Nemat. Ali encouraged me to chase my dreams. Many thanks my friend. I've changed my major 10 times and now I've circled back to computer science / applied computing because I can't get enough of it. So to answer your question, technically no I didn't enjoy it at first. But people's interests changes over time and you can't always love everything you do from the start.
My majors went like this: Media Broadcasting, Accounting, Computer Science - Cyber Security, Accounting (again, and that was a mistake both times), electronics engineering, geology, chemistry, physics, Electrical & Computer Engineering, and now to Applied Computing - Artificial Intelligence.
Quite honestly I've always knew I'd be in STEM, but I never quite knew for sure what I wanted to do. It was only until recently that I realized 2 things:
      1. I hate working with my hands. I always loved planning projects but never actually doing them, anything hands on was just a nightmare, very undesirable for me.
      2. I love AI and can't get enough about topics related to AI and computer scripts / programs. I don't really like programming for the sake of programming, but I love AI.
To answer your question, NO, for me personally I did NOT enjoy what I did from the start, but I think that's because you have to have a certain mindset to be really open to something. When I first went to college I was not in the right headspace, I felt like I was forced to go and wasn't absorbing anything in my classes. Now I'm back with a limitless drive to continue on this path, happier than ever... and I love my field. Artificial Intelligence is the future of every industry, in fact many industries are using it right now as we speak.
I'm very happy to be in tech field, and the best part is that my field pays a lot of money too for seasoned people who are good at their jobs. I probably won't stop at a bachelor's degree, I'll probably get my master's degree in Data Science as well, but we'll see how that goes.
I hope that answers your question at least from my perspective anyways!

Got an English degree (and an MFA) and do not regret it whatsoever, even though it's going to be a long, slow start to my career and I need to pivot to something else while I get started with what I want to do. People who are unsatisfied with their degrees aren't unsatisfied due to following their passion, they've been spoon fed this idea that success is linear, effortless, and instant after graduation. If I went into medical, I'd be so miserable I probably would not have survived 6 months. But there are so many options in front of me with my English degree that I'm sometimes paralyzed by the choices I have.

A business degree is great when you already have a career. It boosts your chances of getting into management. I entered the Military at 22 and chose technology and electronics as my career field. Once I got out, I continued to work on contracts for the Federal Government based on experience for over 10 years. Looking for a little more stability I got a job directly with the Federal Government and decided to get my Undergrad and my Graduate degrees over 4 years. I had taken a lot of classes prior that transferred over along with earning my technology Associates degree through the Community College Of The Air Force. It will help me advance further once there is an opening. While, one is already in a career\job it might not be required to have a degree, but it could put you head and shoulders above your peers. Everyone's brains and emphasis in mathematics are different. I started out as a CIS major in a community college specializing in programming but had to switch to web development because I could not pass C++ programming (I dropped it) and out of nearly 20 people who started the class, only 3 or 4 people manage to ace it with everyone else either dropping out or getting an incomplete.
I wasn't ready to stop my studies with my CIS degree which was an associates so then I decided to transfer to a four year college to pursue a Bachelors in Mathematics as this would serve as a bridge for me to either stay in CIS or go into education. I ended up teaching developmental mathematics as an adjunct a few years without even having a Masters degree along with tutoring for several years in math and IT. Eventually, I went back for a Masters in Education Technology and worked as a Project Program Specialist for TRIO federally funded programs. After doing that for 7 years, I am currently working in Healthcare IT as an Applications Analyst. Mathematics is a versatile field that can take you many places. My programming skills are not that strong although I do have a moderate foundation in web / software development.

I just started my first semester back to college this Spring (was gonna start last Fall but I was denied FAFSA due to my GPA from when I dropped out 9 years ago, which was low due to me regrettably not giving a flying crap about college), and I thought long and hard about what I'd wanna get a degree in; something that I could enjoy but would be lucrative...so I'm aiming for a Computer Science degree~ watching this video makes me feel really good about my choice, I'm gonna work hard at it~

@@karlarios5609 Oh, I can't give an accurate representation of it yet~ Since I was denied FAFSA, we have to pay out of pocket until I can raise my GPA back up, so rn I'm only taking one class online, which works for me because we have four kids so I don't have to find a sitter for them to go to class. I just do my work around their schedules haha...and I'm just taking College Algebra for now, since it's a prerequisite for Calculus~
So far, so good, though! I'm really enjoying it; I like math a lot so that helps and the hubby has helped a lot by keeping the kids distracted for me so I can focus on the notetaking when I need to, whenever he's home~ I figure by the time I take/retake enough classes to raise my GPA back up, the kiddos will be old enough to be in school/preschool (I just had a baby last September) and I can start a larger workload of classes~

I have a strange relationship to college, I am currently a senior about to graduate into the after effects of a COVID world.
I have developed a lot as a person in 4 years, I have learned what I do NOT what to do with my career and what directions I would be okay doing, but I have learned that the price tag for my collage experience (without the scholarships I got) would not have been worth what I got.
I am a graphic design major, that has a lot of creativity and leeway in what I can do with that, but at the same time, if I had just worked 4 years at a graphic design firm, I would have learned a lot more, but I don't think I would have grown as much as a person. Do I regret going to college? No, or at least not completely. If I could do it again would I do it differently? Yes. I would have chosen a different college, maybe one where I could have tried more things, different class selections, new country, IDK. but for an 18 yo coming out of high school it was the right decision then.

Because an undergrad in business and finance is really just a "basis". Pay with such a degree is okay but nothing exceptional. More chances with an MBA or something you indicated. With a solid finance degree you can also make a side step towards actuarial sciences. Lots of money but then again, lots of study. Mind you that lots of people already have a job when "advancing" their studies, so you do have income. But it's a hard life when working AND studying. But ultimately the result is rewarding. On the other hand, there is nothing on TV and social media sucks, so why not study?

@@ronkethewriter Again what is BioMedical Science? I have degrees in STEM and don't understand what BioMedical Science would be. BioMedical is an application, not a fundamental science. We have BioMedical Engineering that is the use of engieeering to applications related to Medicine. BioMedical Engineering is a subdisipline of Biological Engineering. So BioMedical Science makes no sense.

I had always regretted not finishing my Chem E degree, but it just wasnt doing it for me. I love chemistry and just went for it, resigning myself to the fact that I'd have to spend another 5 years in grad school to really learn it and get a decent job. It took even more time and a couple of different jobs for me to truly be content with the path I chose. It doesnt hurt my feelings that the Chem E's ask me how to run processes either 🙂

i finished my first semester of college at montana state university for computer science....got a 2.4gpa and I actually tried. Need to get a 3.6gpa this semester in order to keep my scholarship and stay here. Though I was thinking maybe go to georgia state/local community college or college and do computer science there since it is low consequence if I do poorly on some cs classes. Idk still up in the air because I also am interested in marketing and maybe exercise science.

Stick with CS. It’ll be worth it. Try to figure out what made you struggle in your classes. Do you need to cut time from working/socializing/whatever to make time to go to office hours or work with a study group? Also most colleges have free tutoring as well, look into it. There’s nothing wrong with getting help… you’re paying to learn already so use every resource that you can… Eventually the concepts will click in your head. It’s very hard at first, but you’ll be a better off for going through this.

    • @llexcusesll7933

If that was just your first semester, you better stay on your toes. I’m in my second year and in my data structures and algorithms class we had 28 students and at the end we had only 9 people pass the class… Practice programming in your free time always, and watch videos of programmers coding through different situations.

    • @netfelixandchill5329
      @netfelixandchill5329 2 ปีที่แล้ว

I definitely think it’s worth it to try to stick to cs even if you transfer. I was going to go to Georgia state or kennesaw but ended up at a college in ky with bad professors in the department of csc. At the time, I was only worried about cost but came to realize reputation of professors plays a significant role. We have TA’s who do the teaching for the most part, and the head of the dept is not easily accessible so I ended up dropping the class and the major. If you like it, you should definitely think about continuing it but if you dread coding, you should try something you enjoy. But it’s all up to you. Remember even if you major in one thing, it doesn’t mean everything else is closed off. I’ve seen music majors become academic advisors and political science students get into coding on their own time.

History degrees surprisingly are also very versatile. I didn't realize that until this past month (Jan 2022), do I recommend it no. Its a pain in the ass, and I was studying just as hard if not harder because you are having to learn how to write in a historical way. So if you don't like writing, avoid History Degrees all together. You will end up having to learn languages, at mini 30 page papers once a quarter, and if you do a school like SNHU, your quarters are 10-12 weeks long, so you have that time to research what you need for the final paper, and then on top of that you have papers to write during the course. So really, when it comes to history, unless you love history, and love writing about it, avoid it like the plague.

From what ive researched thus far, they pretty much have the same job prospects and you attend a lot of the same classes, the main differences being CS having more electives and being more math based and less teamwork based, and software engineering having the credibility of being an engineer. But like, they have the same job prospects anyway so i could become a software engineer with a CS degree which allows me more free time for the same result.

"Coding" and "programming" are different things. Stop conflating them. A "coder" offen makes less than a "programmer" and coding is fairly easy to learn compared to programming. There are overlaps but think of it this way, coding is built on programming. The Browser is built in C++ but what you see is HTML (or the alternatives), javascript, and CSS (and/or styles content management systems).
