This song reminds me an ex girlfriend which has a serious toxic relationship prior to ours. That guy was violent to her but her mind was always with him. We couldn't hold on because her past and it was just after we broke up she realized maybe she wouldn't find someone who love her the way I did.
.I feel like the narrator of this song is a drug itself. How an addicting drug will destroy you, tempting you to fall into its trap. Tells you all you need is the money, and you'll be okay. But in the end, you run away, and hurt people, sacrificing yourself to just a drug who doesn't care whether you're happy, but only in need of it. How a drug will make you say goodbye to your loved ones. I imagine the drug itself taunting and smiling while saying, "Don't you just love goodbyes?"
It's a good "theory" and there is a lot of things that fit your interpretation but some things does not fit. For example "I won't care for you, like I'm really supposed to". Is a drug supposed to care for it's users? For me it feels more like a one-sided (unilateral) love with the narrator being the one who loves "Callie" and Callie is trying to get away from the narrator. The narrator knows his flaws but still want a relationship with the girl. This interpretation makes more sense with the line "I won't care for you, like I'm really supposed to" and "There are things I'll do, that could really hurt you". But this interpretation does also have flaws like "I can always get you down if you got the money for me" and "Don't you just love goodbyes?"
this is the first time i hear this version, love it!

Mew is brilliant. Their arragements are interesting and beautiful, and their lyrics are strange. This combo really does something to me.
