i NEVER get tired of this. Sara is an UNSUNG DIVA - She doesn't behave like one, but her voice is legendary. so pure, and notes so clean. She has never really gotten the credit she deserves. I'm just noticing that I actually commented 8 yrs ago and I'm still in awe of her musical gift.
Every time I listen to Sara’s version I get chills! Anyone else?
💥🤙🏾♥️
Yes❤
every time!
It's the only version to listen to
In terms of musicality, emoting Angelina Jordan elevating SB version even more!!!!
Love the guy in the background, in the orchestra, just enjoying his front row seat smiling at how good she is.
We are all embodied in that guitarist watching her, gobsmacked, and full of respect for this performance.
It’s her father
@@michaelmcgreevy2894 That's pretty cool
Sir Elton John: "I was so blown away by the version of Yellow Brick Road. I've never heard anyone sing one of my songs like that ever. I can't thank you enough, giving your time and blowing my mind with that version. Because when someone sings your songs they usually copy you and she made it her own. That's brilliant--it's a hard song."
He didn't say all of this.
@@ruffruff7510 Yes he did.
@@ruffruff7510 Refer to duet Elton did with her on Gravity, he said all of this.
@@nikita-dh5je, my apologies. I thought you wrote "hard on".
Sir Elton.... listen to Anglina Jordan... she takes it away!
I'm 67 and have heard a lot of music in my time. Including loads of covers that rarely live up to the original. But this is an exception. In my opnion Sara Bareilles has taken this song to a new level. Excellent.
This woman is in an inimitable league of her own. She’ll never get the accolades the many commenters say she is shorted- for good reason. She does not need a level of recognition that’s already below her if we’re equating her to pop/commercial standards of notoriety. Her musicality and performance is pure and impeccable and a treasure in a world of carbon-copied personages and stale musicianship.
You only have to look at the smile on the face of the acoustic guitarist behind her (who is not playing in this) to know just how wonderful this is.
I think this is the first time I could understand the lyrics.
literally 15 seconds of singing with one breath, unreal
She’s the most underrated and unappreciated vocalist in the business.
I don't know much about singing, and this is the first time I heard her, but I was absolutely mesmerized!
"Back to the howling old owl in the woods". Who knew? 🤷♂️
Yoga probably helps
I agree!!!!! Sara is so very awesome and her Talent is so REAL!!!!
@@burns1210 I think it’s actually at @3:11-3:25
This woman - her talent - isn't appreciated enough. Her vocals are... I'm speechless.
This is literally one of the best musical performances there ever was. Just beyond amazing. I could watch it over and over. The musician's face behind her throughout, and the little tap of his hand at the end, says it all.
He knows he was just part of perfect performance. Doesn't get much better than that feeling right there. Cheers!
It's literally not. It's a good performance, but it's not remotely close to one of the best ever.
3:10 here is a perfectly executed single breath 15 second vocal, which has clarity, power and tone and perfect pitch. No wonder Elton John raves about this cover
And she makes us wait for it.
imagine how many times she praticed for to go this perfection.
And no Autotune!
Boy you got that right! What an amazing moment!
yep, dead on 310 to 330 magic
Her voice is absolutely haunting. She gives me goosebumps
Her nuanced voice is breathtaking. 🌹👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾
I can't remember the last time I heard something so exquisitely crafted, sensitively and dynamically performed, so intelligently thought out. Absolutely stunning.
@david Myers it’s JT... from TMB... hope you’re doing well! I agree it was an exquisite performance!
🎼 This song is wonderful. Her interpreting is heaven.
I dream of her doing a duet of some fabulous song with Lady Gaga, or even Billie Eilish....wouldn't that be grand!?
Tender rendition.
@@NN-jv5is Thank you for giving Angelina Jordan the idea for her version of this song.
th-cam.com/video/Ozd2ja7mAgM/w-d-xo.html
Ive probably listened to this specific performance more than 100 times. I still cannot find a single note out of place. Sara is a gift.
All the way from Hawaii thank you for singing that song so beautifully done such a beautiful voice and Talent
Listen again then properly
Right at 2:59 it sounds like she says "horny BLACK TOE" instead of "BACKED TOAD". Perhaps not a note error but lyrical.
@@ArztLecker No. I listened many times ..."Hunting the horny BACK toad. " this is correct. lip language does not match the pronunciation of L, you can see this in slow motion.
elton heard this, and contacted her, wanted to perform this song with her...and they did. look it up.
I'm a rather jaded 64 yr old. It takes a lot to move me. So why did this bring me to tears? I had never heard this version.
Then the original solo version of this symphonic presentation will make you bawl: th-cam.com/video/Ozd2ja7mAgM/w-d-xo.html
@@iroulis I love that version
Can you imagine hearing this and NOT giving a standing ovation? This cover is unreal. Probably the best performance I have ever heard & seen, live or otherwise.
I can’t imagine NOT standing omg what a voice she has!!!!!! I never heard of her until today, she had a concert here locally two years ago had no idea until I saw it on TH-cam after this song.. WOW!!!!!
I literally react like it personally affects me and my husband came running thinking something was wrong with me.
I never read the words of songs and now I read every word.
So much joy to share.
Yes it is beautiful rendition awesome
God given talent!
@@daledeese983 she is an awesome singer
Not just the vocal cover but the orchestral arrangement is sublime. The strings are incredible.
Sara Bareilles really is the musician’s musician. Such effortless power in her vocals ❤ ❤❤
Am I the only one that can fall in love with someone just from experiencing a performance like this? Her talent tears my heart out of my chest. Even on the 1,000th listening.
Why is this woman not the biggest thing in music? She outshines every contemporary female singer today.
She was absolutely massive back in 2007-2010 when her albums Little Voices and Kaleidoscope Heart were released. I guess you just didn't follow pop music at that time...
Her music isn't main stream. Just like Joni Mitchell. She is amazingly talent, but just not for everybody. Not a mass "product"
Everybody else grabbed all the good publicists.
@@LizatHome Absolutely wrong. "People like the ordinary"??? Can you think of *_no_* modern female singers who are as extraordinarily talented as Sara? You have a hypothesis, that people like the ordinary, now prove it wrong.
I wish her performances were more well known too, so I share them with my friends. But also, part of why she's not as well known as some modern performers is because of her. Her style does not cater to the experience that most concert goers are looking for: pyrotechnics, elaborate dancing, or some other gimmick (and no you cannot just blame Katy Perry or Ariana Grande for sewing those seeds. Think of all the famous bands that went nuts with the showmanship.) That's just not her way, and that's okay. Don't confuse your attempt to elevate yourself with cynicism.
@@leomarshall4059 haha this gave me a good giggle. Quick wit.
She’s the most underrated and unappreciated vocalist in the business.
Steve Paradiso no kidding. I feel like I’ve been living under a rock now. Just found this vid. And her. Incredible.
I agree. I’ve liked her music for many years now but I suppose I never really appreciated how amazing her voice is.
I’m a singer as well, though nearly not as talented as Sara, and her resonance and technique in general just blew me away when I first heard her sing live.
I just discovered her. I think she is lovely. I've started down that rabbit hole . I expect I will find many wonderful and exciting
things.
Been saying that for YEARS. I totally agree.
No, Brandi Carlile is
3:10 to 3:35 never hear the word "road" sound so beautiful . . . . amazing. I think I am in love.
Your listening to high quality music, know you have exceptional music taste!❤
This is how I discovered Sara. Forever changed my life.
How so?
Didn't know she existed in 2019. This video pened up a whole new world of music, not only herself. Just knew I liked Elton. Goes to show what a small bubble we live in.
This isn't a mere cover, it's a re-invention of the song. What a beautiful interpretation Sara.
Stunning.
If you like this one, go find her cover of it in Atlanta, 2013. Jaw-dropping.
I've heard it like 4 times already. amazing rendition.
have you seen Angelina Jordan sing this song?
@@lucreziajackson3326 Angelina Jordan has a great voice and a good future ahead, but Sara's interpretation is far better than Angelina's.
I've cried on this one a hundred times... every time my life takes a turn for the worse, it brings me back around. elton is the beloved legend but respectfully, sara's version makes my heart begin to be right again. not sure why... just is
The standard is set for what a cover of a classic song is capable of sounding like. She's absolutely angelic.
Her control is astonishing! That 5 bar run makes my heart sing!
I don’t know what a five bar run is, but whatever it is I agree with you because there’s NOTHING wrong with this song…🤗
@@madwhitehare3635 this song is in 4-4 time which means in each bar has 4 quarter beats so she is not only exhaling to the count of 20, but she's modulating the air moving through her vocal cords at varying rates of speed making the notes higher or lower and at varying rates depending on how close the notes are in the vocal run. It's incredibly difficult what she's doing and it's on par with some of the greatest opera singers, in my humble opinion. 🙂
I could listen to her sing all day everyday and never feel a need for anything else. Her ability to make me smiles is second to only my wife and children.
i keep coming back to this
Back after 8yrs to listen to this to her sing this song and I still get chills when she hits those high notes.
I love the expression of contentment on the guitarist's face behind her. It shows how much these amazing musicians appreciate good music when they hear it.
Well said they know the one's
I was waiting for someone to mention him. :) Him and I had the same expression throughout the entire song
She sings everything as if it was beautiful, legible print versus sloppy cursive....
I was scrolling down to find this comment!
The guitarist behind her is giving her the sweetest smile.
haha that is so true!!!
+Jeb Hoge Lol! I was looking out for him the whole time because of your comment. Seeing his was like finding Waldo at that point. Hahaha
He absolutely makes this clip so much better. Like a proud Dad. Love watching him.
He gets to sit just feet away and enjoy this brilliant performance. I would be smiling just like that.
Jeb Hoge that was the first thing I noticed. His smile says it all.
Oh Sara's version is simply exquisitely done❤ sorry Elton, i love you, but this is my new favorite version!
Besides pure talent, which Sara has in spades, what I love about her is that instead of resting on talent alone, you can see hard she has worked at her craft. Her breath control alone, is astounding. I see people comment all the time about how she should be “bigger” or “more famous” than she is. And she could be, if she wanted to go the pop star route. Clearly she is looking for something more, and she is achieving it. She has integrity not seen often in mainstream music. When it is all said and done I think she will be relevant long after most of today’s “stars” have faded.
Tiki Stanford could NOT agere more
👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻
One hundred thousand percent !!!
Greatest octave shift...ever
Sara gives a great performance. Any experienced trained musician can explain why this is so good in so many words how she does it with such beautiful expression. Tone quality( knowing when to be subtle with head voice or when to belt using chest voice) precise intonation, appropriately applied dynamic nuance, careful vowel shaping on each syllable, carefully arranged orchestral backup that compliments everything she does vocally without being too much. Everything done with both precision and emotional control. Simple yet exquisitely beautiful yet modestly tasteful attire does not visually distract the listener.
@@mattyb5345 just go to 3:10 and tell me she's straining...
Vocal coaches have been saying for years you cannot judge strain by what you see it going on in the neck. There is a lot of reasons you will see neck veins, and it has nothing to do with a persons straining.
This is simply one of the best performances of all time.
She is truly a legend and master of her craft. Bow down to the queen. NO ONE ELSE COMES CLOSE TO MS. BAREILLES .
We are in the presence of greatness.
Grihe: amen
AMAZING. I could listen to this forever. She is incandescent.
I agree! She truly is just that!
"you cant plant me in your penthouse" gave me frickin chills....love her voice
It’s also a complete joy to watch the adoration on the guitarist’s face behind her. At the end, he pumps his guitar and if feels like he’s saying ‘ she totally nailed it’ and she did of course.
The arrangement makes it. She starts and finishes with the simplest of chords resisting the temptation to turn into yet another power ballad. She concentrated all the emotion on that beautiful middle section. Stunning.
Sara's just a pure work of art. Elton is smiling, if not, he should be !!
Simply the best sound ever made by combining a human voice and an instrument.❤
Hard to listen to this version without wiping tears. Breathtaking rendition, I am speechless. Thank you.
I've literally watched this 50 times. It's so freaking good.
i come back to this every hour
3:03 - When pure, raw emotion aligns with professional talent. A truly remarkable moment. I'm a professional musician and I love watching/listening to moments like these. At my stage, it takes a truly gifted individual to give me chills. This did it.
Thank you, Sara.
Exactly! I surely don't have perfect pitch or anything, but when she meets the same note as the violins with all that raw energy PERFECTLY, all the elements of the song become one in an instant. If you don't immediately get tears in your eyes then you just don't love music!
I have listened to this many, many times and all my hairs still stand up on end. Amazing
Absolutely love this lady! ❤❤ She sings from the heart, always! She is the best female artist of today!❤
I could listen to her do that one phrase a thousand times and never get tired of it
I was so blown away by her vocal performance that I completely forgot she was also playing the piano for awhile. When I remembered that, it completely blew my mind. I'm a singer and pianist, but this is something else entirely. Incredible.
She's playing three instruments: the piano, her voice, and the entire hall - at 3:11 you can hear when she belts so loud the mic picks up up the hall's reverb, and she wove than into the performance. Amazing. Amazing.
Her version is extremely intimate... just like all her songs. That long "Ooooh" gives the shivers! 17 seconds long without breathing....!!!
Loooove it :D
I was just thinking about the remarkable focus required to deliver that note while continuing to play the piano! I'm not a pianist or vocalist but can appreciate that it's probably pretty darn tough. Her interpretation truly displays Sara's artistry, supported by her undeniable musical talents.
so glad I stumbled across this version. Sara sang this, beautifully.
Nobody realizes that Elton is one of, if not the greatest song writers ever to walk this very earth......period!
He wrote the tune, but not the words.
Timothy Smith If what I read is true, the real genius was Bernie Taupin. He is the songwriter of most, if not all, Elton John's greatest hits. Elton John was mainly involved in the music.
I saw Elton John perform Yellow Brick Road in 1974 at the Cow Palace. Sara Bareilles does the song proud!
I'm speechless. Sara is a musical genius. I love her changes to the song, every change so perfectly placed.
love me some Sara B but what she did to this song is awful... i need to go back and listen to Bottle It Up and Between the Lines right now to wash the taste of this out of my ears.
Thankfully, Will, everyone has their opinion. Personally, I enjoyed this passionate unique interpretation . And Sir Elton's original version reflects his personal time and experience when he wrote it. Two wonderfully talented artists.
Agreed!
She hypnotized me. Outstanding.
Its absolutely NUTTY how talented she is. The fact she can play a piano and sing like that is insaneee
Sir Elton John loved this version himself..this is incredible :)
Absolutely incredible! Such a stunning interpretation She changes just a few notes and makes it her own. Her pitch, her timing, her control, her delivery - I love it all. She doesn't over-sing, but uses her power when she needs to. I am now a huge Sara B. fan.
Superb take on one of Elton’s classic!
Well said... she's simply transcendant, I can see the field of poppies all blooming at once :-)
Breathtaking pathos. Absolutely gorgeous.
It's purely pure. It's just amazing.
This is an amazing version for this song. Sara bareilles crushed it, my favorite version I have heard!!!
As many have mentioned Angelina Jordan (no kidding and it doesn't surprise me!!!), I've been listening to different simgers' versions of this song. There is a part of me that wonders how one can separate AJ on AGT and Gala, who won Belgiums Got Talent. Then I come here and listen to Sara, and I'm just blown away with this performance. Not only does she have a nice voice (no cackling!!), but this arrangement is just so professional and classy. I really enjoyed this.
no words to describe her vocals. my god. the tone, the power. amazing.
Easily one of the best Elton John covers I have ever heard!!
Ugggggggg seriously??????? jesus everything that she sings is GOLD. Love her so much. All of her music choices are just perfect. This version is just so haunting and sublime. xxxxxxx
Have I ever lived before this moment? Will life always be divided by time prior to hearing this the first time and everything hence? I'm undone. Beautiful!
That's a lovely comment.
The breath control this talented human has.
Nostalgia tingles it gives me
Good lord, this is beautiful. It's like she was born to sing it.
I never realised how great a song this is until I heard this version...
I agree
Me too
Same! Elton is one of my heroes but she really brings out the utter masterpiece of this song
At 59 I finally know the words. Love it.
Same 🤍
I dare say a flawless performance, and just incredibly moving. I've watched this probably 3 times so far.
Agreed I even felt quite emotional and I don't know why , what a performance and rendition, I've always loved this song, but now I even know the words lol first time in 48 years !
I'm on 3 now. Going through comments. Grateful others appreciate this.
Love the original. Love this version.
Just so good.
3 times a week this year.
Has to be 6 or 7 times for me now. J
I’m playing it for people I know hahaha… It’s just so moving, intriguing and inspired. Gorgeous is an understatement.
Those are rookies numbers
She kills it every time. She can sing anything.
Blessed my goosebumps with every "Ahhhh..ooooohhh" she gives.
Some original songs are so good that you think there cannot ever be a better version of that song. This version is so incredible beautiful, it proves me wrong.
True !
Best cover in the history of covers. I love this performance.
Two tears all the way down my face. When she starts it’s beautiful and then you’re all the way in and all out committed. All you can do is ride till your heart explodes and your head says what was that. She’s amazing.
How could anyone not love Sara Bareilles?
What separates Elton John and Sara Bereilles from the rest of us mortals isn't merely their singing and instrumental skills. What really does it is the emotion they pour into their songs. His version is more defiant, her's sounds more anguished. In either case it is someone giving up their dream and going home after finding they cannot or will not thrive in the world they sought.
@Clever Trevor they stay in their room and blossom away from the idiocrity..harvest their own mind
Beautiful rendition. And thanks Pete for explaining. The lure of the yellow brick road and penthouse life aint always what it seems.
Cause the people making decisions have no clue. I’m sort of sick of watching rather mundane fumble to analyze weather and political comments from people who aren’t qualified to discuss matter at hand.educational system insane. I wish had this in school. Make hrs of classes turn into getting subject learned and then continue to learn more
Pete Guard very well said!
Yess
OMG... I think I went into another dimension after discovering this cover... Wow.
Profoundly talented individual.
Wow just wow.
I cried. Her rendition of this song easily pierces through the heart. So much emotions!!!
Music so good that it brings one to tears. She knocked this out of the park.
Gillian Miles so true, I cant explain it. I never have this reaction to music. There's just something about watching someone at the peak of their craft enjoying what they are doing while captivating a room full of people. Perfect.
Simply the greatest vocal performance I've ever heard. Astounding.
Wow! I never saw The Waitress, or anything else by Sara Bareilles. She's got one incredible of lungs on her. BRAVA!
And She's Stunningly BEAUTIFUL
God she is stunning. I just love the guitarist behind her looking at her with such admiration...
The man seated next to her with the guitar is adorable. Just smiling throughout the entire song.
One of the most beautiful voices this planet has ever been blessed enough to hear. 🙏🏻
Maybe spare some kudos for Bernie Taupin, who wrote these words:
When are you gonna come down?
When are you going to land?
I should have stayed on the farm
I should have listened to my old man
You know you can't hold me forever
I didn't sign up with you
I'm not a present for your friends to open
This boy's too young to be singing, the blues
So goodbye yellow brick road
Where the dogs of society howl
You can't plant me in your penthouse
I'm going back to my plough
Back to the howling old owl in the woods
Hunting the horny back toad
Oh I've finally decided my future lies
Beyond the yellow brick road
What do you think you'll do then?
I bet that'll shoot down your plane
It'll take you a couple of vodka and tonics
To set you on your feet again
Maybe you'll get a replacement
There's plenty like me to be found
Mongrels who ain't got a penny
Sniffing for tidbits like you on the ground
So goodbye yellow brick road
Where the dogs of society howl
You can't plant me in your penthouse
I'm going back to my plough
Back to the howling old owl in the woods
Hunting the horny back toad
Oh I've finally decided my future lies
Beyond the yellow brick road
Thank you! Such a beautiful song!
Could've only been written by a farm boy.
Sounds like this was inspired by some poor soul who was a kept man who knew they were expendable and being used as some kind of sex slave ("I'm not a present for your friends to open")
Simply the best cover ever!
Love the early songs. The fox was the last thing I bought. Too commercial after that and very few songs that moved me. Not a great performer either. Very campy.

Love this version, made it new, made it hers.
Ditto.
Sara is just in a class of her own and this rendition of Yellow Brick Road is freeking me out! Beautifully done.
After becoming addicted to this video, I couldn't help but fall in love with her. I'd only heard Love Song, which was terrific (I'm a 40 year pianist, myself) and fun to play, then a few years pass and I sort of stumbled across this about a week ago, and.....WOW! The magical droning of the chord progressions, and Sara's captivating & heartfelt vocals made my hair stand straight up! This talented lady took a song from decades back, and breathed new life into it. I especially loved the ending, when she kind of short cut into the Db, Eb & F to take it home beautifully. I'm in awe. Thank you, Sara!! We want more!!
Thank you for explaining the chord progressions. I just love the whole feel. It’s beautiful 😍
I'm with you Glenn. I'm a guitarist and play along to her several times a week. Her emotion, the pureness and perfect tone in her voice makes my playing along seem like a gift. This feeds my soul. Hope you understand.
@@LinYouToo you’re welcome. Actually she changed the progression at the end of the chorus line. Elton ended the chorus with the walk down, F, E. Dm, C, Bb, C, F. In addition to the Bb-C, F, Sara puts in a Db to Eb to F (between the C and F). And this is all based under the assumption that the key of the song is in F.
Her voice..........Simply blown away.
