I honestly love these! FUZ is just so charming! It has a little bit of everything that makes FEZ great, but it's bite-sized, and the creator is actually a chill dude! And I can safely say: POOM is how I got into DOOM properly. I'm kinda surprised you didn't talk about that one.
Another advantage of the PICO-8 architecture is that it teaches and gives you an appreciation for the retro games of the past; All PICO-8 games come with the source code and that means you can poke around and see how the game works and, while pico uses a subset of LUA many of the general concepts are the same as "old school" game programming ( even if they are nicer to use then what our forebearers where actually using )
Good collection. My favorite thing about pico 8 games is that you can look at and edit the lua code for every cart. It can be a bit overwhelming depending on how well the code is organized 😅
Ooooh PICO-8! 💜💜💜 I picked up a small square-screened handheld a while back, and it's perfect for this... in fact I learned about PICO-8 in a review for that handheld, and tbh it's the main reason I bought it. I love it, I've played a bunch of delightful games and these look great too - I'm surprised how devs can cram this stuff onto this tiny fantasy console. Superhot?!? 😄 There's a few options for cheap (but good) square-screen handhelds - mine is the Powkiddy RGB30 which I recommend, and there's also the newly released Anbernic R Cube XX (which is both cheaper and better, I think). Retro Game Corps has reviews of both.
