  • Sundays February 26th 2023…With Hwy 395 finally reopen after a “hard close” for the last 48hrs the great exodus out of Mammoth Lakes took place today. Miles of traffic backed up in town with police escorting thousands of cars south down through the town of Bishop,Ca …not a moment too soon with a blizzard moving in which is expected to drop 2-4 FEET of snow in the next two days

Part of my upbringing was in Mammoth Lakes. At that time there were 600 full time residents in town. We had a little restaurant called the Penguin. It was before Safeway, there was one narrow road to Old Mammoth. The gas station was Atlantic Richfield. (They really did auto repair.) We had the old post office. No fire station.
Leaving town, about 4 miles down at the junction with US 395 is a geyser named Casa Diablo. It was visible all the time. There were no other buildings near the geyser at all.
Go south on 395 a bit then there was a basic airstrip on the east side; and turn left to Mammoth Elementary School and the fish 🐟 hatchery.
On the Mountain we had one chairlift and a rope tow. Later a T-bar was added.

    • @midi510
      @midi510 ปีที่แล้ว

Wondering where you got the 600 number from. I moved to Mammoth in '62. I remember seeing the town sign with elevation and population after I'd been there for several years and it said the population was 450. That may have been an old number, but I don't see 600 people living there before that. I still live here, but you must have been here before me, since there were five chairs, a T-bar, and a rope tow as I remember. I don't really remember learning how to ski, but I do have memories of a rope tow. I think it was on the line that became T-bar 2.

I have no problem with your numbers. I came to Mammoth in the early '50s.
Later when Dave really got going he built like crazy. So the numbers and kinds of lifts and other things changed rapidly.
To be honest I don't remember where I got that population figure. But it was a "common knowledge" item. This I do know, I have been in my little town farther up the state since the '70s and they have updated our population sign once. But we have grown much more than I like!
Did you know that Dave McCoy got started with a portable rope tow? It's location was west of 395 down in the area of Lake Crowley. Very ancient history!

The history of Dave is pretty well documented these days. For a while, I lived next to Gary and Tina. My younger brother and Davey were best friends at the time. We spent a lot of time around the McCoy family in the old days I see Davey and Gary now and then, but am more in touch with Ron. Mammoth is a mess of a micro city now, being inhabited primarily with city people. I have no intention of leaving anytime soon, though. It's still so easy to get away from it all. I'm only three miles from both the John Muir and Ansel Adams wilderness areas. Plus, I've been working on Pisten Bully snowcats at the mountain for going on 30 years and like being top dog.

Just think... in 1844 some dudes led by John Fremont and Kit Carson crossed the Sierras not far North of Mammoth at this very time of year! They went from the East side of the Sierras to Sutters fort ( in now, not then, Sacramento ). The lndians told them not to try it because of the snows. Knowing Fremont he probably decided to go because of being told not to. Early February to early March is how long it took.

When you still see that much snow on everyone's roof, you have got to wonder how much damage to the structures there will be. Right now here in WISCONSIN we are going though an all day rain event...with up to 1.5 inches expected. When that water hits the snow, it collects the water like a sponge, and if the temps drop (its expected to be 35-40 today) it will be solid ice. The weight will be phenomenal, and we don't have as much on our roofs as your guys there do. It is a beautiful sight though, if everyone can get through it. Thanx for showing us all of that traffic! Sheesh!

As Joshua Glaser stated, the roofs here are designed for these loads. Where we live (Soda Springs, CA elev 6,800'), the design specification call for roofs to support 375-400 pounds per square foot (depending on elevation). In our neighborhood of about 250 homes we have never seen a roof collapse, and we average 411" of snow per year. We're at 440" so far this year and expecting 36"-48" in the next 48 hours! It's beautiful.

I heard before that the seasonal snowfall record is 800 inches on highest elevation there at Mammoth Mountain Ski Resort. Will it get that high, who knows? The winter of 2018-2019 brought 780 inches of snow according to Mammoth Mountain Ski Resort's TH-cam channel on the mountain top. They still would even have more to go to Mt. Baker Ski Area, Washington where in winter 1998-1999 they got 1140 inches of seasonal snowfall. Well that is the worldwide seasonal snowfall record unless that record was broken in Japan.
I don't live out there in Mammoth Mountain/Mammoth Lakes, California or anywhere else like Breckenridge, Colorado but I looked at TH-cam videos over the years about skiing/snowboarding, and life in general in Western United States.
Be safe when traveling, skiing or snowboarding. I have medical problems and just living on Social Security so I haven't done skiing in 8-10 years.

If you live out there, traveling to skiing to Arapahoe Basin Ski Area(no lodges and/or hotels), Colorado maybe too far to go. But they have had dry powdery snow like in January in May before. Their base is 10,000 feet and over 13,00 feet and the top. It's close to the Continental Divide. I can't change things, this is just what life given me.

I left MMI at 10 and it wasn’t until 2 that I got to the 395. As soon as I got up to the 385 cal trans stopped us as we waited for the next chippy to escort us. The chp showed up and the Caltrans guy picked up his stuff and left as we were the last “escort” down and the floodgates were finally opened.
It was ridiculous that it took us 4 hours to get to the 395 while chp performed escorts. The 395 was completely dry and had both lanes open except in 3 spots. Not sure what the point was other than to keep people slow but there are other ways to do that. (Like Idk write tickets for speeding)

As you were shooting this, I was skinning up the ski area boundary on the north ridge of Hemlocks. We then skied down to Pumice Flat and skinned back up to Reds Lake. Here's the video: th-cam.com/video/4k1mi-oGcwI/w-d-xo.html It was nice and sunny for most of the skin up, but the next storm had already moved in by the time we dropped in.

I am not confident in knowing their are very few businesses in mammoth grocery store, carls jr, library, Mc donalds, breakfast place, of course coffee bean or coffee shop laundromat, rite aid small town. Its a large snowfall and it seems that people some how have to go driving, their is no where to drive in spring time and summer. Its strange how people don't PLAN for the snow in winter in cold areas, they just decide their bigger, more, stronger than the circumstances of the earth. I really dislike some people when their expectations extract, praise difficult, danger, hardship, uncomfortable as a way of living. The people who call you crazy for not driving pointlessly in the snow, cold, freezing temps, for not keeping their expectations at any cost.

I'm curious, you have a block heater in your Cummins? I have a 6.7 but rarely have the use for one. About the only time was working in ND in Oct/Nov when it was in the high 30's and mid teens a few year back, left before the 30 below though. Mammoth gets cold but not 30 below cold.

Yes, have a block heater and wall/outlet timer to save energy. Pops on at 5am. From there usually start her up at 8am … I’ve done a lot of research and according to the interwebs these newer gen Cummins (mine is 2018) don’t really need to be plugged in unless you’re in the single digits, even then some people swear you don’t need to plug in. Regardless if the temp is 30 or below I plug in… figured it can’t hurt
