Same. I can’t believe how excited I am over this tool and episode. It’s like the day I realized I was a soccer mom, pulling up in my minivan at the soccer field.
Thanks Jim (and Katie) for finding this shovel, creating the video, and saving Christmas. I promptly ordered one for my husband & me, one for my brother, and one for each of our adult sons and had fun wrapping them up as Christmas gifts. Reaction -> They were all VERY pleased and enjoyed your video.
Yay! I bought this same shovel a few years ago after watching one of Jim's videos about digging in clay and its become my "go to". Easy to use and picks up the right amount soil/compost so I'm not struggling. I don't think I'll wear mine out as much though 😁.
I really enjoyed watching you enjoy your new shovel! Like a kid Christmas morning with a much wanted gift! Clearly you needed it- and I absolutely agree that the step metal needs to be wider on MOST of our gardening tools! Happy for you!!
Although that trenching shovel is worn, I wouldn’t trade that for a brand new one for anything in the world. You should auction off the old one for us faithful viewers. Hahahaha thanks for all you do. I really enjoy and learn a lot from your videos. I am totally afraid to send in photos of my yard as it is always a work in progress, but I am building up the courage to do it. Can’t wait to see that area outside the sunroom done. It’s gonna look amazing and be a great place for the two of you to have a cup of coffee and just reap the rewards of your hard work.
Saw the thumbnail and was like "OMG, Jim finally got a new shovel?!" 😂 I went looking for a shovel similar to Jim's, and ended up with a Razor-Back trenching shovel. It's my main digger, too!
How nice! And thanks for the link. In all the years of gardening I didn’t know I needed one, until my son left his at my house after doing a project for me. I loved it, so much easier digging a deeper hole with hard rocky soil,I will always still use and keep my old shovel bought as one of my 1st gardening tools by my husband who has passed away, so here I am at 70 years old buying myself a shovel that I didn’t know I needed. 😊
looks like my favorite trench shovel but slightly shorter lol. I don't think is weird to be obsessed with the shovel. We get attached to the tools and supplies that make gardening a success and happy for us.
Thank you to the viewer for Jim's new shovel. I've been looking for one similar to the one Jim has already but can't find . I prefer wooden handels I landscaped many years and find the fiberglass dangerous they shatter if it's to cold and the splinters are no joke along with the fact they vibrate and throw the shock back on you if hitting a large root .
@@careyjohnston4176 Glad I could help. I'm a geezer, too, and ergonomics has become serious business for my aching back! Lowes, Home Depot, True Value Hdwre, all carry wood-handled trenching shovels. "Razorback" brand, made by chicoms, but with wood handles. A good sanding and a coat of Pine Tar, and the wood will be good for a year's service. I love using pine tar one wood handles to keep them lively and free of bugs or rot.
I inherited one from my mom. My most favorite and never let it leave my garden I've also look for a replacement to give gardening children! Thanks for sharing
Yes Jim I don't know why they don't make the step part of shovels wider for using your weight to force into ground . If they were wider you have more balance . Manufacturers never ask those that use their products how to better assist you.
Great news that you found it! My father had a trenching spade that worked like magic so I somewhat understand your passion. Maybe one day someone will find one for me.
Just love your channel! Your positive & enthusiastic mannerisms are wonderful to listen to. Look fwd to your posts. 💥👊💥😎 Let’s dig a hole somewhere” 🎉🎉☕️🍪🍪🍪
I would like to get that shovel, but we’ve spent so much on home repair and tree work, I don’t think my wife will let me. Of course, I could suggest it as a Christmas present.
I have a short handle version of that same shovel. It was called a perennial shovel. Because of its long, narrow blade that gets deep underneath perennial roots. be able to do better and it is great for edging I got is called hooyman
I actually like the stainless steel digging tools from Lee Valley. I've had a spade from them for well over 10 years! Plus if it ever does break, they have a lifetime warranty.
I did find the 5" size for less (exact product) and ordered it yesterday at noon. It, surprisingly, arrived today by noon. I'll be putting it to work this weekend.
@@darrinmc You should find it through a simple internet search and find it from a contractor tools distributor. Since Jim likely gets paid through his affiliate links, I don't want to step on his toes by providing an outside link. It is a great shovel, though, and has already gotten a workout.
Thanks for this video! I’m in the market for a trenching shovel. The first one I bought didn’t have a place for my foot to rest, and I’d hurt myself if I tried.
How wonderful!! I am glad Katie was able to help you out with finding your favorite shovel. QUESTION: Would I be able to have my husband cut the handle down to fit my height? I am short. I have a lot of trouble with a lot of tools, Rakes Hoes, Shovels etc..because of the length of the handles. Thank you Jim for all your videos and information. I have learned so much from you. It's s amazing the amount of knowledge you have.❤❤
You should try the Radius line of tools. They have a shovel, transplanting shovel, edger, fork etc. They're just the right height and have a kind of ring at the top instead of a regular straight handle so you can have options about where to grip it depending on the task.
I really don't understand why more folks don't use trenching shovels instead of the more common types. The narrower blade means less frontal cross section to push through the dirt, so an easier use. And the angle of the handle to the blade is ideal! Once you've tried one, you'll be convinced. The only thing I'd recommend is getting a Bully Tools version because they are made in America and every bit as economical as the Chicom versions. It's one time when you can support American manufacturing without paying through the nose!
That was so kind of Katie ( subscriber) to send that new trenching shovel !
When I saw the title of this video, I thought "his trenching shovel." When I saw the box I said out loud, "He found it!" Yay!!!!!
Thank you Katie! I got so much secondary joy from just watching him unbox and demo and talk about this shovel! ❤
That was so sweet and thoughtful of Katie.Glad you have a new one Jim.
Gotta get this for myself, thanks!
PS, Jim you helped me with a virtual planning session 2.5 years ago and the landscape is looking GORGEOUS
I never imagined I’d see the day where I got excited, listening intently about garden tools. Here I am.
Maybe you can create a tool grave yard art sculpture with the old shovel?
I’m totally nerding out with excitement for you and your new shovel! You are in good company, we are all a bunch of Garden nerds🤓
Same. I can’t believe how excited I am over this tool and episode. It’s like the day I realized I was a soccer mom, pulling up in my minivan at the soccer field.
Way to go Katie!
Your happiness is contagious !! Thank you Katie- I’m buying one too😊
I just ordered this shovel on Amazon tonight. Love my gardening tools. Merry Christmas to me. My husband said just order it so I did.
This shovel is great news! Thanks subscriber Katie! An excellent housewarming gift!
You’re the reason we started using a trenching shovel on small projects. That’s awesome they figured it out.

That shovel totally reminds me of you. I would love to have a shirt that had that shovel across the front or back.

My dad was a mechanical engineer and loved tools!
That is so awesome!! You sure have worn it down lol 😆

Wow, how nice of her!
Somehow I knew your favorite tool is the trench shovel. I purchased one just like yours earlier this year, and it too will become one of my favorites.
Saw the thumbnail and went “omg he found the shovel”. Glad to see I was half right. 🎉
Jim what's the brand of your new shovel?
SO VERY THOUGHTFUL OF KATIE !!! MERRY CHRISTMAS TO JIM N STEPHANIE AND PUPS!!!🎄🎄🎁🎁💕
What a delight to listen to your videos! Only you could post a 15 min video on one tool and make it interesting. Thank you Jim

Bully Tools, out of Ohio, makes a great trenching shovel. Well worth the money, and every bit as economical as the chicom tools.

this is now my go to shovel. ive wasted so much time and energy on a normal shovel. Thanks Jim
Be sure to show us your first plant that goes in the ground with it 😊
Jim...I ordered the shovel today! Here's to hoping it turns me into 1/100th the gardener you are!
I bought that exact shovel a few years ago based on your trenching shovel recommendation. That's cool Katie found it's the same as your old one.
I use my trenching shovel to plant perennials/annuals closely within other plants in an established garden.
Yeah, Katie🎉 Thanks for sharing holiday cheer.
looks like Christmas came early this year for Jim - he must be on someone’s 🎅🏻“Nice” list 😂
Am digging it Bro 👍🏼

I’ll have to try one. A skinnier ‘Sharpshooter’ has always been my go to
Wow, I guess I really do need a trenching shovel for this red clay! 😲 Thanks for the demonstration Jim.

Maybe swap the old handle to the new shovel head.

That is pretty awesome. I remember the episode when you said about having a shovel like your old one. Glad you got one. I must get one. ☺️👍

Nice! Jim, do you use an auger by any chance? If so, do you have a recommendation for one to use for shrubs?
Which size do you suggest?
Jim do you use that for all digging ??
I hope you give the old shovel a proper burial. RIP "old reliable", lol
You're still keeping the old one aren't you. I still keep the the old heads even though the handles have broken.
