Avery, who has been around for some time and is quite well known in the black community, is IMO, the best male singer of this generation, taking over the mantle for the great Phil Perry. Listen to him doing "Flawless" and his cover of Leon Russell's "Song For You". His runs are supple and flawless, but it's his pretty timbre that keeps me coming back for more...and yes, that is Avery harmonizing with the guitar on that break.
Turning the treble up on mics is unusual, More common is turning down the treble when recording in intimate places like clubs because of the higher frequencies ringing in corners. Did someone think that because much of the singing takes place in higher registers that it should be 'assisted'? Heaven rescue us from amateurs with technology. Good video, good reaction, good analysis!
Thanks for another great reaction. I love your mastery of music and the joy of music I feel from you, and your opinionated but warm style! However, I feel cold with this Mariah Carey type of runs in the music, it feels like musical diarrhea (pun sort of intended!) to me. It's feels to me like all technique that adds nothing to the connection I feel to the song; in fact it detracts from it by drawing the wrong kind of attention to the singer. I can appreciate the technique and I realize it's a "style," but it just leaves me cold!
