I really like the idea that Gladiator isn't actually any kind of gladiator, and is simply a raving lunatic who's lost their mind(s) due to the war and the cataclysm and all, and is now acting as if they're one of the gladiators they've heard/read about, attacking anyone who attacks them and compensating with it all by simply thinking it's all a big show for the arena. And, none of the knights say anything to them because they're either afraid, or else the Gladiator is just so effective in combat that they'd rather not lose the support. I feel like that'd explain a lot of the confusion of different types of gladiators combined into one, as well as why they shout things like "Fortune favors the bold!" and "Favourite of the crowd!" in the middle of combat, plus why their armor wouldn't be super well maintained - if they're such a big star in their head, they'd probably presume someone else would probably be keeping their armor and weapons cleaned for them
I think he actually was a top gladiator. He was sent to ashen fields along with cent. And like cent, went completely fucking mental. He still thinks he’s a gladiator in an arena as that’s the only place he’s ever known and it’s what makes him feel at home. He’s forgotten the specific styles of armor and weapons he was trained in amidst the madness and instead just uses armor he vaguely remembers from the arena.

I just find it funny how people actually believe that the factions are constantly at war. You mean to tell me that the soliders all the way back in their keeps and strongholds far from the Frontlines and any combat whatsoever are still fighting? The hell they fighting, ghosts?
That was so annoying to hear because I'm a gladiator main. When I saw that there was no armor for the new year I was annoyed, but then they announced that heroes would get new armor for the event so I didn't mind it. Gladiators event armor though is such bull, it's the same thing as previous armors with just minor changes and different colors.
What I find funny about the whole "everybody's got rusty ass armour!" thing is that the Wulin classes have metal armour and it's almost entirely rust free, especially in the case of the recently added Zhanhu - he's got several sets of lamalar, scale, and "mountain" pattern armour and all of it is beautifully maintained, looks wonderful, especially when it's done up in a brightly coloured metal. So apparently it's just the Knights faction who don't know how to maintain their armour properly because the Saumrai wear mostly wood and the Vikings wear mostly leather.
I swear some people think weapon and armor mantinance is some mystical process that must be done by an expert that takes several hours to do instead of just the user themselves with a rag
Gotta love people that don't understand how warfare and weapon maintenance works. If these soldiers are constantly fighting all the time without any food, water, or sleep, then I wanna know what kind of drugs they are taking.

I just found your channel and Im loving these breakdowns :) Keep up the awesome work! Id love to see breakdowns for the rest of the roster at some point.
Funny thing about overlapping armor... It is still used in todays world with soldiers. US troops can use their allowance to buy "Dragon Scale" body armor. It has small scale like titanium plates pointing downward. It is actually the most powerful body armor on the planet, it is said that it can withstand 40mm bullets. But it has one flaw like said in the video, if something gets under the plates, enough force will break through those plates.
I know literally nothing about gladiators but im assuming they dont use the armor on the buckler arm because they use it for quick strikes and bashes and having the armadillo type armor interfere with those movements and actions only saying that because i found a few pictures of gladiators with the same set up except their bucklers are a dome shape
I figured that all of the pelts were signs of how wealthy the gladiator was considering how rare and expensive some of these animals would have been to Rome, especially in the case of the three big cats. While I know leopards may have been no more than a days journey across the mediterranean into coastal africa, for this man to be able to not only kill, but then buy the pelt of that white bengal tiger is crazy to me. I also agree that the secutor helm would be a wonderful addition. With the helmet itself being very plain, there would be ample room for some deviation for those sets.
I don't really know how accurate this is, but there is a painting from 1872. called 'Pollice Verso' by Jean-Leon Gerome. It depicts a murmilo class gladiator (gladius and round shield). He is wearing one of the 'mandible' helmets with an exact same copy of the Modesty ornament. His right arm is well defended with what I can imagine is scalemail and his left arm is almost bare. A belt and skirt that are fine and lastly 1 shin is better defended than the other. The crowd is also giving thumbs up and down. Why did Centurion get that execution and not Gladiator??
I think that the Jupiter's champion helmet and the Fortuna Adiuvat helmet are a reference to "Tigris of Gaul" in the movie the gladiator, or at least they resemble it in some way
My fashion on my glad is: Beatiarius Helmet or Hippocampus helmet Hippocampus Chest or Bestiarius Chest Rex Nemorensis Arms Weapons are Mars Trident’s head, Juno’s shaft, Bp’s event buckler.

I don’t know if it’s rust, but dirt and like mud and muck.. I think that’s why most of them are damaged like that as why the rust looks pretty dark. They want to give the illusion not that your character just got to the fight looking all dirty, but that the character has been fighting for a while, you’re just controlling them at that point in time. I believe that’s why the maps all have some sort of damage, the only one I can say that isn’t like this is temple garden (maybe a few others but I don’t remember)

Thanks for what you`re doing.
Maybe the rust adds some depth to the armor? To give that bit more detail to the creases and edges to prevent it from looking stale and boring? I'm a fan of the rusty look. My headcanon is that ever character just wears their gear 24/7 since all 3 factions(fuck you, Wu Lin) have been at war for roughly a 1000 years. You never know when you might need to raise your sword, so there is no point in taking off your armor if you might need it in an hour and it takes 15 solid minutes to get everything ready. Edit: aaand you touched on my headcanon. Cool. Still, I like the Rust on the armor.
The first helmet you talk about and show the archeological evidence of is a Provocator helmet as far as my understanding of the gladiator types goes. Also, i Think it's pretty stupid of them to call the other helmet the 'retiarius helmet', like you said, it's literaly the only gladiator class that didn't have one! -_- could have perfectly named it after any other gladiator class... Personally i think hoplomacus or tracian would be most appropriate for that one. But they have a tracian already... And it looks like a mashup of... a lot of different ones... Also, the provocator gladiator class had a kind of short chestplate, based on early roman legionary chest plates, I asume that's where they got the inspiration of most of those for the game.
To all the people saying they can't maintain their armor because they are constantly at war, I hope you know there's things called food, water, sleep, friendly territory, and oh the rear lines that are specifically made to give battleworn and weary soldiers a break from the fighting on the frontlines! If soldiers are chilling in the rear hundreds of miles away from the front and they are still fighting, then I wanna know who it is they are fighting. Are they fighting ghosts, maybe a bunch of trees that looked at them funny?
