HOW TO TIE THE MINI MEAT WHISTLE | MY FIRST FLY TYING VIDEO | ONE OF THE BEST FLIES IN MY BOX

  • Is this a streamer? Or is it a nymph? Its neither, its the Mini Meat Whistle.. It is one of the deadliest stream side combos you are going to find! Not only is it easy to make, but it is also easy to take! Folks this is one of my bread and butter fly patterns that has done some serious work over the past year. If you are new to the channel you may not know.. If you have been around.. You know the deal! This is a super versatile pattern that can cover such a wide range of imitations. Is it a bait fish? A swimming nymph? A big Stone fly? Maybe even a crawdad!! It has such amazing action in the water and I would highly recommend any fly fisher to whip a few of these up and stick them in your box for the next trip!

    I was curious how you were down sizing John Barr’s pattern. The way you tie it is more like the slump buster or pine squirrel leach. You tie the mini a bit different than the than the original, which you wouldn’t be able to do when down sizing. What sizes do you tie it in. Good video maybe slow down the tie a bit from high speed. I enjoy watching other people tie, and I have been tying over 30 years. You never stop learning. Keep going.

    Huh...I tied almost the exact dressings on 1/64 to 1/16 oz long shank jigheads for catching smallmouth and redeye on ultralight spinning tackle in creeks.
    I also tied one without a tail and then on the water I attached a pork skin strip that roughly matched the color of the zonker body. That one was deadly.

    I was completely skunked this spring. The only conclusion that I came to was that I was targeting spawning rainbows? It kind of reminded me of having to virtually slap a dry on the nose of brook trout in October.
    Yes, tying videos are important. Why, because the folks at the fly shops, here, seem disinterested in tying. No, I don't want to talk about that rod that split twice in the same place, really. If I didn't tie, I'm not sure why I wouldn't just use a jar of salmon eggs with a fly rod, or spinners with conventional gear? I've bought tons of synthetic materials, including floss/thread, over the years, that I now have no intention of ever using; too much stuff is almost worse than not enough. Maybe that is why I like tying, as it is an inherently a challenge just getting materials. Natural fur, hackle, and hair rarely disappoints.
    The Mini Meat Whistle is gorgeous, so much so that the video could be shot in grayscale and go all-out 'artsy.' Your videos are great because of your narration; you could talk about fishing (which is cool, don't get me wrong), or you could talk about your grind following an extensive series of highway signs, and it is still captivating. I'm inspired.

      It is one size bigger than whatever is recommended for a Size10 hook. I am not too sure on the actual number

    Thanks for the video - I got the supplies to try tying myself! Quick question - I'm having trouble getting the wraps to look quite as nice as yours - what's the width of the zonker strips you're using?

    • @FLYALLSZN
      @FLYALLSZN  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      I use pine squirrel Zonker strips!

      Thanks! Think I just needed to tie a few to get the hang of it - caught my first fish on one of them yesterday!

      Follow up question - what hook and bead size do you typically use?

  • @Danny-ng3og

    What size bead do you use for the MMW?

    • @FLYALLSZN
      @FLYALLSZN  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      I like to oversize the bead at least 1 size! So if you used a #10 hook, go up one bead size!
