I, too, am enjoying this side of Steve. This is quickly becoming one of my preferred WWMM video, because I am chuckling, learning, and seeing a side of Steve that I find even more enjoyable than his normal presentation.
You should have known him some years before, when he refused to wear or use safety hardware. I have learned a lot with him since then. Steve will always be Steve.

I love your sense of humor. I could watch you build random stuff all day. My own woodworking projects often follow a similar trajectory of "Figure it out as I go." lol
Thanks for keeping it real, Steve. I really appreciate your no nonsense approach. I often build while figuring it out as I go. Plans are good, but a project like this is more about build practice, tool use, etc., without fussing with perfection. This would be a great project to build with a beginner. It would be a fun project with spouse, child, grandchild. There is plenty to learn from here.
the most fun part of any diy wood project is looking at blank pieces of wood and figuring out in your head how to make something from them
Loved the video and the “when are you going to make a project video” joke. Also, I think it’s important to show the true behind the scenes impact of thinking a project out but making a mistake. As well as showing others what putting it together ‘in a more challenging order’ looks like. Also liked the tip about painting BEFORE assembly, would have made my last project much easier to finish. Cheers!

I love "minimal tools" videos on TH-cam. It's fun to count all the tools the maker forgot they were using. Not judging Steve, I've seen it dozens of times on many, many channels. I think they are trying to do a good thing by encouraging people to get into woodworking.
...and 4 clamps, a tape measure, a framing square, an impact driver, a large work bench, a dust collection system, a power sander, a roller brush, and a paint brush.
So, I wasn't the only one! :)
to be fair, you can do this without dust collection and just sweep up at the end.

YEAH!!!! Lockdown Steve shines through. I've been seeing so many 2x4 builds so seeing this build with 1x4 kicked my brain into "oh, hey, 1x4's are plenty strong enough for these things." Harkens back to the video the other guy did about using 1/2 ply instead of 3/4 ply. This was such a lovely, easy, clean, approachable build. Thanks!

This video has a strong "lockdown woodworking" vibe. I love IT.
This is a cool grill stand, Steve and I really enjoyed watching you build it and listening to crack jokes while you did it. You're correct. I won't build it, because the kids are gone and it's so much easier to throw a Stouffer's or Marie Callender's into the microwave.
That doesn't mean that I didn't enjoy it and that I don't look forward to your next project. Hey, I've built many (not all) of your projects over the years, but I think that I've enjoyed them all.

Nice build, I also put heavy plastic screw-in little round feet on the bottom of the legs since they are end grain so water won't wick up them as easily. It has worked well on a large planter and bench I have made last year and this spring. Love your humor. Great landscaping and the cats on the prowl are awesome, Good stuff. All the best. Deck builders used to use a 16 penny nail for a spacer so just copy them and use some arbitrary item to space them. 👍

This is exactly the type of woodworking video I like to see. You are always authentic. You show is your process, including your mistakes, and you make a solid finished piece of work.
I love imperfect project videos. I tend to overthink the projects that I do and it really helps to have wisdom to lean on when I am caught in a tight spot.
A lot of big TH-cam makers will only show you the perfect project from start to finish with no mistakes; but that's unrealistic.
I enjoy your project video because they are honest and transparent. You are especially good at explaining your thoughts while navigating these little issues. That makes me more equipped to handle similar concepts when I am working on my projects.

Hi Steve...I have been watching your channel for about two years now. Thank you for posting this project. Most people that are in a position like yourself would have stopped this project, rethought the steps, deleted the video clips recorded thus far and started all over. It is helpful to beginners like myself to see that even experienced "mortal" people run into obstacles and everything is not always 100% perfect, like some would like to have us believe. I also appreciate you stating, "Its' close enough." Don't get so frustrated in trying to make everything "perfect." And I loved where you talked about your friends will not come to your house to visit with a tape measure in hand to take measurements of your projects. Wonderful statement that ties it all together...Thank you for showing all the good you do for our community...and even some of your mistakes...It all is greatly appreciated!

Thank you Steve. I've found out the hard way that even the most basic woodworking project require some kind of planning and attention. You let your guard down because you can count on your years of experience, but then you forget the basics and a really simple project turns into unecessary problem solving. Truely humbling!

The humor in this episode was phenomenal! in all the 13 years of you being on youtube this has to be the peak of comedy for your channel.
Perhaps we can say that woodworking is 60% formula and 40% creativity and the creativity on your behalf is most brilliant as well as being a fantastic speaker down to the finest of details. I am 72 years of age and nailed my first stud in at 11 years old...since then I could not tell you how many pieces I’ve made for myself as well as other people, still at it today I have to man-up and let you know that I do learn things from watching and listening to you. You Steve, are super great for the woodworking community and I’m so happy that you include the younger and the beginners. You are most valuable to the woodworking community and thank you Steve for everything I’ve learned from you in the past years. Thanks man.

It's awesome that you did a project using basic tools and showed some of your mistakes as well. I find myself getting too fancy and complicated sometimes in my videos. You inspired me to get back to a few basic builds!

I'm halfway through your weekend woodworking course, and I must say I love the simplicity of the builds, yet they come out looking professional! I agree with you if I ever just watch the ones with million dollar shops I would never build anything!
You go, Gary. There's a heck of a lot more $500.00 shops out there than $5,000.00 shops and The Mere Mortals tend to have the $500.00 shops.

I think one aspect of this type of video is that it feels more personal. It's like we're all friends and just having a bit of a chat while you work. As another commenter said, I think we all need this at times like these.
