As Sultan Süleyman waits for Alex, he happens to see Mahidevran. İbrahim is held resposible for this mistake. Sultan Süleyman stroms at İbrahim. Sultana feels responsible for what happened and decides to speak to Sultan Süleyman but she meets a reaction that she didn't expect. Süleyman sends a letter which he explains his objectives to Hungarian King Lajos via a messenger. Süleyman is determined that he will have a campaign for Rhodes which has been tried but couldn't been conquered before his era. Süleyman gives Alex a new name. It lances through the palace that Alex will be called Hürrem from now on. This news bothers some in the palace. Hürrem's rapid rise gets negative reactions. Mahidevran punishes Hürrem heavily with the help of Sultana. Mahidevran tells Hürrem that she can save her from this punishment but she has a condition.
At the age of 26, when he ascended to the throne, Sultan Suleiman aimed to build an empire more powerful than Alexander the Great and to render the Ottomans invincible. Throughout his 46-year reign, he became the greatest warrior and ruler of both East and West.
The young Suleiman received news of his succession to the throne during a hunting party in 1520. Unaware that he would be ruling a reign beyond his dreams, he left behind his wife son and took to the road with his close friend and companion Pargali Ibrahim to reach the Topkapi Palace in Istanbul. As they started their journey overland, an Ottoman ship set sail from Crimea in the Black Sea, bringing female slaves as gifts for the Ottoman palace… On this ship was Alexandra La Rossa, the daughter of a Ukrainian Orthodox minister, taken away from her family and sold to the Crimean palace. She had no idea that she would become Hurrem, wife of Sultan Suleiman and mother of princes, ruling the empire with him through bloodshed and intrigue.
As Sultan Suleiman conquered the world, his great passion for Hurrem would clash with his love for and trust in his closest friend and advisor, Grand Vizier Pargali Ibrahim, all set against the backdrop of the tension between Christian Europe and the Ottoman Empire in the 16th century.

It's very obvious why Süleyman got attracted to Hürrem, everyone around him repeatedly says " We can't discuss his decisions." no one stood his own ground, no woman tried talking to him, they are all boring.
Hürrem treated him as a normal man, tried loving him the way a woman loves a man not a sultan.
True as well as her unique beauty making her stand out even more she was the only red head in the harem

Did anyone notice when Mahidevran walks into the Sultans chamber how she looks around noticing everything, she admiring her surroundings. But when Hurrem walks in she only has eyes for Sultan Suleiman, she's not fazed by her surrounding just the man in front of her... Moving on I felt bad for Mahidevran until she began lying and bullying Hurrem. I understand why Hurrem became so fierce in the end. Also, the scene where he gives Hurrem the ring, it's pure magic, the music the wind blowing, Suleiman eyes and Hurrem's lips simply beautiful.

I think she was noticing how he made the room ready foor Alexandra/Hürrem, she knew that he wasn't expecting her for the night, so that must have been a painful realization that he put so much effort into that Russian slave.

But with hurrem, the pacing around of room, the nervousness and the continuous checking himself was gold! How they both were so mesmerized by eachother was so beautiful and magical.

Suleyman had slept with other women before hürrem arrived (correct me if i'm wrong) and the way he looked at Mahidevran when she arrived to the palace... Mahidevran might be the first one to bore him a son, but you're right, Suleiman had had other concubines before Hurrem. He just happened to fall/favor for Hurrem. Hurrem was smart to take advantage, her name would always be remembered in the history... In real life, we don't know whether or not Mahidevran was directly blaming Hurrem, it's possible though, because if they blamed the Sultan (and the system in which they're forced into), their lives would be forfeit.

Hurrem really made him feel loved and feel happy and feel himself. Some people don’t understand how important that feeling is. And get stuck in loveless relationships and marriages. No one saw it from Suleymans perspective

Luckily this is only in the show lol, irl, Mahidevran might be the first one to bear him a son then (pre-Hurrem), but there was no indication he was ever in love with her, heck, he didn't gift her any role/status, I read that her stipend was small too (so he never quite favored her)...he could have, but he never did, so I could see that he was never 'in love' with Mahidevran, it's just that she was the mother of the crown prince. With Hurrem, he married her, etc. So he did show his love/affection for her by elevating her from slave to his sultana.

Sultan Suleiman while playing with Mustafa says this jokingly (22:30) "Guards take him away I want his head" and then he becomes serious suddenly, as if he knew that one day he himself will order his son's execution. Very nicely portrayed. 👍

In fact this serie shows only 40% of the truth, many think that Sultan Sulayman had made wrong decision to execute his son and his prime Minister but in fact he had to do that bxz they were threatening his power and crown, you may go research to get more informations about it

Mahidevran was never a Haseki Sultan and after the birth of Sehzade Mustafa her sexual relationship with Suleyman was over. As a Sehzade in Manisa Suleyman strictly followed the traditional rule one concubine-one son up until he met Hurrem. So when Mahidevran arrived to Istanbul there was no love or sexual relationship between the two. She was used to Suleyman having other concubines, she knew the rules. Alongside Mustafa, Suleyman had one older and one younger son and a daughter before he became the Sultan. Unfortunately all but Mustafa died of the plague that hit Istanbul when he was on his first campaign. Hurrem already had a son then as well, but he was a newborn, Mehmet and he survived the plague as well. These are historical facts so this rivalrly between Mahidevran and Hurrem is completely fictional. Sure, the other concubines must have been jealous of Hurrem when Suleyman started to break the tradition and having multiple sons with her but obviously something clicked between the two. And also, Hurrem didn't have a choice, she couldn't refuse the Sultan when he called for her again and again.
She gave birth to 6 children alltogether, Sehzade Abdullah is not even mentioned in the series, he died as a toddler.
And she was the first to hold the title of Haseki Sultan, which was invented for her. After the death of Valide Sultan, she became Suleyman's most trusted person and after the marriage she ruled the Harem. So the need to give her a higher rank, similar if not above the dynasty Sultan, was necessary. Otherwise it would be impossible for her to rule the Harem.
I so wish they done this programme with legitimate facts in it. Don’t get me wrong I love the series but it would have been so good if they done another series with how things actually happened and show him with his children with Gulfem also and also shown Sehzade Abdullah. Of course it’s heart breaking that some of his children died to early in their lives but it would have been great to actually see the full history of Sultan Suleiman.
@@jesssefton6752 I guess if they had done the series with only historical facts it would not be as interesting and appealing for the masses, especially as it's a Turkish series where drama is needed for views.
Also, in order to fully understand the life of Sultan Suleyman one must be acquinted with social, economical challenges of that time. A wider perspective is needed to understand his life and decisions he made as a Sultan. It is also impossible to know how Suleyman acted in daily life, how he adressed his family, how he behaved, what they spoke about. So some parts can only be left to imagination. But certainly the series portayal of this is way too modern. Also, the harem was still in the Old Palace, not the Topkapi, Suleyman actually ordered the expansion of the Topkapi for his harem to move there but this happened much later, Hafsa Valide Sultan passed away before she could have moved in the Topkapi.
Yes, I love the series as well but the more I read academic papers and books of the era the more it annoys me how lightly they disgraced real history.
I read in a newspaper that sone people actually went to Suleyman's tomb after the part of Mustafa's death was played and cursed him and spit on his tomb.

Giving Mahidevran the title of haseki sultan ruined the significance of it. It was created specifically for Hurrem and they washed it away for mahidevran to make her seem more relevant than she actually was and to feed the petty rivalry between the two women

Suleiman doesn't really have much imagination. He approaches every concubine in the same way. In the meeting between Sultan and Hurrem, she is that one who makes the difference, she is exceptional, he is boring and stereotypical. Hurrem rules!

The reaction to the ring shows how different Hurrem and Mahidevran are… Mahidevran automatically assumed it was for her and felt entitled to it. Suleiman sensed that and seemed irritated by it. Hurrem said it was beautiful and asked which woman is was for. When he didn’t answer her, she put the ring down. She already had a better sense of how to read him than Mahidevran. Suleiman found Hurrem to be a fun and a true companion. He fell out of love with Mahidevran, and her actions down the road didn’t help matters. I also don’t think Suleiman was too happy with Mustafa already declaring himself the future sultan. It was plain to Suleiman that Mahidevran put that thought in his head. She had already started to self-destruct.

When Mahadevrin entered the room....her first looks were on the contents and fabrics etc. what all he had in there...not at Sueliman himself. (She then went to Sueliman) . Later she saw the large emerald ring , and just knew it had to be for her. At the entertainment she tried to make fun of Hurrem, and when Hurrem corrected her by telling her the new name Sueliman had given her...queen mother sent her to the prisons for being disrespectful to Mahadevrin. Mahadevrin then went to Hurrem's cell, told her she would get out if she begged forgiveness from her.....Hurrem said...no. That all backfired on them when Sueliman found out. When she recovered, Sueliman called for her again, and he placed the emerald ring on her finger.

Mahidevren didn’t love him at all. She was just enjoying the power trip of her position and the ability it gave her to control others. She thought she was equal to Sultan Suleyman. She FA and she found out.
I think the Sultan had not ever fallen in love before Hürrem. They were all trying too hard to please him, and too scared of his power. Hürrem loved him and he her, in a way he never had. That would go to any man’s head. And beneath the status, power and robes, Süleyman was just a man wanting to be loved for who he was, rather than for his kingdom.
True love is the most powerful force there is. Controlling love is totally different, for it is not true at all, and the person feels it in some way…
Mahidevren forgot that, and even his mother did too. But then women forced to be idle and bored will find ways of entertaining themselves and will find ways of feeling accomplished, strong and important, often at the expense of other women. It’s as old as time itself…sad though

If you are enjoying this series, I think you might enjoy a book I read many years ago. A romance novel entitled 'The Kadin' by author Bertrice Small, if you can still find it. She intertwines history with fiction about Sultan Selim as a boy and how he ascends the throne, and his favorite who eventually becomes Hafsa. In her book she is named Cyra and after Suleyman ascends, she is named Hafise. It's a lovely book to read and does include Hurrem at the end. But Cyra does not come from Crimea as the real Hafsa did. It's a great book.

In my opinion mahidevran loved suliman because she didnt have a choice, she was his slave, that is the only way she could live her life till mustafa becomes a king , all her tears when suleiman left her she dried easily by mustafa's power

Mahidevran gets my nerves. She is always in such a misery. Yes, i do agree it is harsh to see your man sleep with another woman. But, she lived at those times, the day she was born that was the world she was living in. In nowadays, it is crazy for us of course, because the structure and hierarchy is ages different. We don't have to compete against other women in such terms. But she knew where she lived, she knew that the are many other women in the sultan's harem. So, she should be more patient and smart. And of course blaming him for things he didn’t know were going on is unfair, but he never took time to reflect on how his and his subordinates’ actions left him open to suspicion and possible treachery. Sadly this only flaw was enough to cause him to lose his life, which is a shame really.
In this episode, Mahidevran actually broke a tradition/ unwritten rule .It is as follows:
(1)New Concubines / Slaves / Soldiers were given Muslim names in any medieval Muslim royal families service. It was to prevent spies from functioning openly (you had to know the new Muslim name ) .
(2)All letters to home were checked for hidden messages & new converts to Islam could be easily obtained.
(3)Royal families enforced this rule(name change) rigorously because it was considered a piety in eyes of Allah , the Supreme. Those woman given freely to royal harem represented their families & played crucial role in rise & fall of status.
(4) Simply speaking it was politics , even a slave servant could be married off with decent dowry to some noble or mid ranking official. Royal family got a spy into other noble families while loyalty was rewarded by rank rise , gift of land or title to the maiden's old family.
Mustafa is so cute when he is little. I know that as he grows older that he takes on more and more traits from his mother who essentially ruined him. That is why he was killed because he wouldn’t listen to Suleiman

Mahidevran stole Sultan Suleiman from Gulfem and she was fine with that but now Hurrem comes along and takes Suleiman from Mahidevran she hates it. I understand it’s horrible the man you love loving someone else but I have no sympathy for her when she done that to Gulfem 🙄
There's a small difference in these two cases! Mahidevran was chosen from Sultana Valide to please Suleyman, while Hürrem used dirty games to go on his bed!
2nd time watching and am picking up more of Gulfem's reactions and expressions. It looks like she is understanding what Gulfem felt when Mehidevran came along. Mehidevran was dismissive of her. Now Mehidevran is experiencing it and she can't take it.
