    watched your video and I have a couple of comments. 1. Antenna does work on 40 meter withiout the extension. SteppIR states that extension can be used on 40 to improve SWR. Extention only necessary for 80 meter operation. 2. much easier to assemble antenna horizontally on the ground and then raise it fully assembled to connect to tripod. This greatly reduces risk of wire/cord getting tangled.

    That's pretty cool, now to add a stepper motor, a Raspberry Pi, to remotely tune the antenna. What would be really cool is to sit right next to the antenna but still use the remote control. You know like using the IR remote control that comes with your fancy AM/FM radio in your vehicle?

    With some micros & stepper motors, I think I could automate that. Connect to the ATU port on the rig & **actually** tune the antenna.

    Excellent video, I'm very interested in this antenna as I have no mature trees to run a wire dipole for 80M. I'm assuming mounting it next to your house had no impact on the signal in or out?

    Does the Radiating wire end go up & over the top corner and then down at the next corner?
    I'm trying to work out your reference to a closed loop..
    Perhaps you refer to a mechanical loop, a combination of line and wire and not an electrical loop?
    A1 video..You describe being in the west so the radial must point east to favo(u)r that diection.
    From the amount of real estate in the video, you don't have a lot of choice, eh? I hope that what you
    HAVE got, suits your needs.
    A1 video and description...Thank you.
    Don't know if they are stocked in UK. US price?

    Hi Josh. Thanks for the video.
    This is a superb example of expensive engineering. It’s just a shame that it’s totally eclipsed by physics. A multi-band vertical, once assembled as a project, is massively easier and just as effective. A DX Commander is $200. This is $800. (There are other multi-band vertical antennas available). No need to “crank” anything. It’s multiple bands. Plug and play. No brainer. However your video is superb. For those who have bought one I’m sure it’s massively useful.

    • @Starlite4321
      @Starlite4321 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Just watched a video of a guy setting up a DX Commander. You've GOT to be kidding that ANYTHING about that antenna is "massively easier". Cheaper, yes, but this is a great example of "you get what you pay for" !

    • @YllaStar95970

      An elevated radial, set at 45°, is close to 50ohms, and could provide 6dB, causing 100W e.r.p. to become 400W e.r.p.
      Ground radials cannot do this.

    Hay Josh, did you hit that power cables when you put that antenna up? The power cables looked as if they were bouncing around a bit!

  • @CaroleMinxBlanton

    Great review, lots to do, but pretty simple and straight forward to put up. Oh i can see this ontop of Pike's Peak too. Wouldn't that be perfect. Can't wait to use it on the Dry Tortugas tho. What did you think of it handling wind? Looks like it we a stormy day when you were putting it up. Thanks for the great videos @HRCC. 73 de KI5CWY

    • @HamRadioCrashCourse
      @HamRadioCrashCourse  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Once the line is taught is pretty wind resistant. We have a storm blow through one of the day I was testing. It handled it fine with the 50lb sandbag.

  • @n9oqu
    @n9oqu 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    An alternative to the sandbag is a dog leash auger that screws into the ground. Just lash the auger to the tripod with paracord!

    Josh... DUDE...
    This video is scaring the crap out of me @ just past 7 min mark!
    I don't know, perhaps an optical illusion, but your setup looks way, WAY TOO close to those power lines!
    How high is this antenna system?
    How far horizontally to the power lines?
    Other than that, seems an interesting system.
    It would be interesting if you could visit Dave, KE0OG; and compare the the performance of this antenna vs. his SteppIR...
    In fact, it would also be interesting to see how the two would work together in a phased array situation - that could make a truly great joint video for the two of you.
    Thanks for your insights into this system.
