      Since emission regs are partly what killed them, I wish they would try the same engine, but with an overhead cam and VVT and a 24 valve setup...maybe even do aluminum block since they make them better now.

      Yes 4.0 mpg sucks ass. And here in Europe we pay 7 dollars a gallon approx so old Jeep owners are royally screwed!
      Not much worse though than Chrysler's lackluster World engine in the Liberty. Or most other Big 3 SUV 6/8 cylinder equipped SUV's in the decade that followed the 4.0 i6's demise...

    This is why so many guys just re-build older Jeeps. I just upgraded my 97 ZJ that has been in the family 20 years, and it runs great, does what I want it to. We put about 2k into it, and it gets our recreation driving done. 4W Drive - new stereo - new shocks - new AC, new steering, and I can still feed my family. Very nice. My parents had a ZJ Limited for 20 years and wished they had kept it over the new grand Cherokee that replaced it. The ZJ was much more comfortable and felt more trucky. It also had great visibility and no screen that takes three menu clicks to turn on the heated seats.

    • @matthewj2492
      @matthewj2492 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Was not an easy decision, but just about every part has been changed since 97. And my mechanic knows how to work on these trucks. I did not have to start from scratch and change every part in the truck.
      We even have the gas tank recall fix & a big rear skid plate. We did not want to pay 40k+ for a new jeep - and we like what we have.

    The new Gladiator is interesting but from what I have seen it is too long for proper off roading. The bed is too short for any real pickup usage. It might make a good overlander but at that price, not sure that would be my first choice. Until very recently I was in the market for a midsized pickup and I am glad I didn't wait. As for the video, I have enjoyed watching this version of the cheap Jeep, thank you for all the great video's.

    Another thing is the cool factor. Park them side by side at any off road function and yeah, the Gladiator will get some looks because it is a new vehicle but the Comanche will getting all the attention, especially after a couple years when Gladiators are everywhere.

      It's not just a matter of tooling. The original design of the XJ/MJ would NEVER pass emissions and safety regulations today. There's no way around that not without what amounts to a full redesign anyway.
      Emissions and CAFE standards alone mean we will never see a boxy SUV like the XJ again. It's part of the reason so many SUVs and Crossovers today look the same. There's only so much you can do with the shape of a vehicle to help it stay fuel efficient.
