  • 55 Cancri e is a planet that is partially made of diamonds. So then what would it be like to visit this chaotic planet, land on it and walk around on it's surface? Watch the video to find out.

    Diamonds as you may know , are really hard . In fact they are used for ultra strong lasers and discs/edges in cutting tools . With such an amount of diamonds , and the price of diamonds dropping , we could make tools , decorations , suits , lights , car bodies , spacecrafts and more using diamond "powder" . Not pure diamond tho , pure diamond would crack and break really easily . It has to be covered in diamond coating . Much more resistant .. Well everything

      Depends how you are measuring significance. We're tiny, for sure, but in terms of complexity (that we know of) we're number one, the most significant thing of all.
      Also, I like to think of us as not in the universe, but a small slice of the universe looking at itself. We are the universe.

    • @simonk4129
      @simonk4129 4 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      What I mean is that we are just a small drop in the sea of space, hence we are insignificant. There are probably some alien life millions of light years away that are so advanced, that our technology is primal in their eyes. And to those who think I'm crazy has no idea how huge the universe is.

    I doubt diamonds would become worthless by simply making it out to this planet. A lot of the things you mentioned later in the video highlight how difficult and therefore expensive it would be to get there and conduct any sort of mining operation. You then need to account for the logistical costs of transporting these diamonds somewhere hospitable that humans are actually going to be living. Cool video though!

    • @vermilion7777
      @vermilion7777 6 หลายเดือนก่อน

      DIamonds ARE worthless and easily to create. The only reason people are stupid enough to pay such a high amount of money is the marketing of de beers.

    • @celestiaeolya6086
      @celestiaeolya6086 4 หลายเดือนก่อน

      yes and I would even say that on the contrary they could gain 3 times more value than what they are already worth because just the cost in energy, oxygen and fuel spent to go to this planet would be colossal so I very much doubt that we would make it take the trouble to send several spaceships there at the same time and for this to be potentially affordable in terms of energy costs it would be necessary to send a fairly small ship there and therefore we could take fewer diamonds and the fact that we do not cannot return for at least 4500 years and that the diamond reserves of this repatriated planet being very limited (by the small size of the spaceships which would transport them), the difficulty of extracting the diamond would make its value even more significant.

    • @celestiaeolya6086
      @celestiaeolya6086 4 หลายเดือนก่อน

      we all also know that the rarer it is, the more expensive it is and the more difficult it is to make or obtain, the more expensive it is... and so I think even Elon Musk couldn't buy just one gram of diamond from this sublime exoplanet

    I realise our current exoplanet discovery methods are biased in favour of large worlds on rapid orbits, but even so I'm not afraid to admit I find most of the exoplanets found so far to be terrifying. It really hammers home just how narrow the conditions are that life-as-we-know-it requires. Yes, I'm including extremophiles in my list here - even they have boundaries to their maximal conditions, whether that of pressure, temperature, radiation, salinity, radiation, etc. It's fascinating to think that so many clever thinkers have described our Universe as being remarkably conductive to life, yet also realising that for most forms of life, conditions of utter inhospitality lie just kilometres afield in any particular direction. And that's not including the vast, vast, vast proportion of the Universe that ISN'T a planet and instead is almost complete vacuum or the innards of a vast molecular cloud hovering dangerously close to absolute zero for millions of years, or the insides of stellar cores where temperatures are in the millions, or even more bizarrely; in the almost unthinkable degenerate matter-filled depths of a white dwarf of neutron star or -- shudder -- within the event horizon of a black hole. Yikes. I realise we are still a newcomer on the shores of the Universe but so far; give me an Earth-like planet any day.

I'm also intrigued by the idea of what it would be like to stand on a black dwarf. Would you be crushed by it's gravity? If the rotation is fast enough could humans exist at the equator? Since it's comprised of heavier elements would oxygen exist? Could a colony of humans make their last stand on this fading object? Thank you.

    You say that the value of diamonds would decrease if we had access to this planet, which makes sense, but considering that it would take us thousands of years to get there and how difficult mining the diamonds would be once we did get there (not to mention the four thousand-year-long trip back,) wouldn't that keep the value of the diamonds up?

    Lucy Star: ''
    I'm Lucy, named after a famous beatles song they say. I'm incredibly dense and cool for a star which causes me to vibrate! Not just a dim white dwarf star, astronomers discovered my secret within, i have a crystalised carbon core, or a heart made of diamond!''

    So if it takes that long to get to this planet who took the time to get there to learn about this place? How do we know its made of diamonds if no one has been? Something doesnt sound right. Either they have already been there and took that 41 year trip or they are making stuff up

    If DeBeers didn't hoard 90% of the diamonds on earth, they'd be pretty cheap here too.

    Diamonds are already kept artificially scarce (although quality jewelry diamonds are less common than some others)

    Diamonds were already abundant on earth but since the de beers company controlled all the mines in the Congo they were able to create an artificial scarcity and sell diamonds at higher prices as a precious stone.

    Listening to Saturday late night SW radio l was listening to a University's radio station's rebroadcast on SW of their Friday afternoon science show.
    "Twinkle Twinkle little Star...
    .....like a diamond in the sky".
    The guest scientist said some dead stars are just giant diamonds of left over matter of stars - carbon, gravity & heat.

    Nice content!!! But you said something which made me think - what does “75 times closer” actually mean? Forgive me if I’m being simple, but it doesn’t make sense to me. 10% of the distance makes sense. 75 times further away makes sense - that’s 75 AU. But 75 times closer????
