Makshar Israel Potentially the answer is yes, because there is more weight to be spun by pedalling, but also, I reckon that in some downhill situations the fat tire could be faster. Particularly if the terrain is very rough as those tires are about the same width as the front tire on a trials motorcycle..
The problem is that a wider tire will always create more resistance via friction, even with increased air pressure because the contact patch is bigger. But I think these fat tire bikes are going to become very popular in urban situations. I definitely want one! B¬)
My dad owns this bike but we’ve changed a lot of parts we got lighter wheels, custom grips, custom pedals, and a gear ring. It’s great now and we still saved money
My son has had his for a few years now and it's very solid and reliable. Probably the best bike we have owned. We don't need an expensive bike for the handful of times we use them.
I got this bike thinking of upgrading all the components but I have only upgraded the entire drive train, added a suspension fork and new set of Shimano hydraulic disc brakes and I am very happy with it. It handles great and it a blast to ride (it's like a tank)!
Found this channel a few days ago after looking at tricks and now it's my new favourite! Great guy who surprisingly is very similar to me; I want to be a web developer and I enjoy mountain biking but I want to learn some tricks like him! Thanks
I can't wait to find out what you have in store! thank God you aren't a filmmaker or I would have to sit outside the theater, for nights on end waiting to see the sequel. thank God for TH-cam!
I think it depends on your mechanical skill and what parts you already have left over or laying around . and a lot of the bike snobs are just insane. .there like shoe snobs. I have a mongoose hitch..I got the shimano mega 34 tooth 7 speed freewheel for 15.00 a hollow crank 36/22 crank off of a specelized fat boy for 29.00. I had a aerus aluminum set back seatpost in the parts bin . paid 3.99 for a shim to fit . bought a pro master 35 degree riser stem had some leftover aluminum bars . had a brand new 9 speed shimano lx 9 speed rear derailleur , had an lx 3 speed front shifter and bought an lx direct mount front derailleur for 8.00 .and had some road bb5s. snd one avid 160 rotor for front. . stripped off all the mongoose badging and got a vintage reproduction redline head tube decal.. will use the heavy stock tires for now but I don't have much money in this bike and rides great I like it still using the stock shifter works pretty good with the lx rear. so if you have some parts it might make a good fun bike..
Was so excited to see this! I won that fat bike in an arcade on one of those impossible machines somehow then sold it for $150. Can't wait to see what you do with it.
Seth I am so happy about how much your channel has grow you definitely don't remember me . but I was watching you since 7.5k and I still love your videos. keep it up and can't wait to see you pass 100k
Seth's Bike Hacks Hey seth after watching you videos for a while i decided to finally get back into some fun Jumps. Today i went to a park called sunny die bike park and i did the table tops on the small one after a couple perfectly landed ones i did not judge my speed and went like 6 feet in the air now i cant ride for like 2 weeks lol. can you do a how not to fuck up dirt jumps vid.
I am so glad I found your channel! I don't mountain bike, only been a couple times some what seriously. But after watching a shit tonne of your videos you have really inspired me to get away from my PC and get a mountain bike. Your videos are incredibly well made, keep it up!
My mongoose beast is still going strong after 1500 miles, department store fat bikes are only for the mechanically inclined and strong legged. None the less they will put a smile on your face.
I got the malus its the same but grey. I love it, I made the full switch to fat bikes and I will never be going back. I plan on ordering a Motobeane Boris X9 within the next few weeks.
Also side note I switched to a tx55 derailer the stock is a 35 is believe. I also got two sets of resin break pads from amazon the breaks pads stock are full metal and wore really quick so they screech and scream at every slight tug on the breaks. I also got a set of origin 8 levers left and right because i was on trails with it and landed face first into a fucked up day and ruined the left break lever. all 3 of these upgrades together make the bike so much more enjoyable and costed around 50$. I run 20 psi and at this point im use to the weight and can sorta kinda keep up with traffic when I commute.
I was given one and am tearing it completely and repainting and putting some upgrades on it ...Hey it was free~! Thanks for the video gave me some cool ideas
It looks like that is the exact same crank on my daughter's 20" mongoose mountain bike, plastic bash guard and all. So your mass production theory is spot on. 48 lbs! I thought.. would helium in the tires help to lighten that beast up?? Then I remebered when nitrogen in car tires became popular and I had access to it through my work, how much handling and road feel improved in my vehicles. Maybe some nitrogen filled tires would help handling on the dolomite. Thanks for churning out the vids dude. I got all giddy thinking of what is to come... rising up from the murky depths!
Seems nice, I reckon you should upgrade the bike a bit though, for example for another 100-200 bucks. That would still be relativley cheap for a fatbike and see what can a bike like this achive with a few "better" parts.
The only problem is that the bike comes with a freewheel, so to really do any meaningful upgrades I'd need to spend a lot of money on a good fatbike cassette hub, then a cassette, and then a whole new drivetrain. So, I'd be much better off starting with something SLIGHTLY nicer that already comes with a cassette. If it weren't for this costly consideration I'd say it would be worth tweaking.
Wouldn't it be good enough with just some better tyres a new cog on the front and a decent derailleur on the back? (then of course handlebar and stem adjustments to personal preference, but that's a given)
Converted this bike to dual wheel 1000w x2. The frame has help up great under about a 300lb load so far(about 3 years). Me, batteries, heavy hub motors. Its the best thing since sliced bread. :)
My God Seth! I don't have the $300-$500 laying around to buy a nice bike that I can keep and love forever. The only thing I can afford is either a department store bike or a piece of junk from the swap meet that's $45-$100. What I'm getting at is what in the hell do I do to ensure I can get a good bike for my budget! Mine is a Roadmaster that I got from the swap meet for $60 and I need help and advice because I can't afford a nice one. I'm down on my luck.
+Lauren Peralta Keep your eyes out for a used name brand bike! Sometimes you can find a good deal. Look for things like bolts (no rivets) and quick release skewers (instead of nuts). These are the things that make it easier to service and upgrade a bike. If you can do that, your options are limitless! Go the full Walmart route, and you'll be stuck with repairs that cost as much as the bike.
How can u say that seat clamp is terrible on my one grand bike I have that kind of clamp and its good cuz u can higher or lower the saddle fast and easy with out tools required! Btw I have also a roadbike with regular screws and it's a hell to stop and rise or lower it some where else than home and I don't always evn have a toolkit with me when I am riding.
I bought two nice mountain bikes under 500. Both bikes have disk brakes and good full suspension. However, I live in a area with a lot of mountain biking, so there is a big market for used bikes. Join local buy sell pages on Facebook. I bough two bikes off a local buy sell page. One was only 150 and the other was 400.
That derailer is going to become part of the rear wheel very, VERY soon :) I had a tourney on the front, I don't know how is it possible to fuck up a front derailer but, well, the tourney did it. On the rear? I think I'd rather go single speed that lug that piece of crap around :D
I've been riding a Tourney RD for almost a year (using friction shifters) and to be honest, it does work very well considering how cheap it is. And my FD is something like that as well, and again, I've yet to have a problem with it.
The friction shifters make all the difference. Pretty much any derailleur will shift alright with friction since you can trim it. The Tourney certainly does not index well
Tourney came on my jamis trail x. I bought the cheap version so I could upgrade as needed or wanted. Gotta say it shifts like total shit but it's held up to many jumps and crashes over a year and a half.
I think no matter what bike you ride, what brand is your favourite, what gear you use doesn't matter because we are all mountain bikers and we should unite as one not seperate different categories or groups
I swapped out a 34 tooth freewheel and added a 30 tooth chainwheel alongside the 36 tooth. It's working well. I can physically move it back to the 36 when I add a hub motor. I got the new black and blue Dolomite. Added comfy seat and cruiser handlebars, new pedals, trigger shifter, foam grips, bell, mirror, rear rack, front basket, phone cam holder, speedometer, lights. I want to fabricate double rear baskets that mount to the rack with a quick release.
I bought a Mongoose 21spd mountain bike in 90'. It retailed for like $475-$500. I think it was Korean. It was a very solid bike, but had already lost its image as an aftermarket badboy that it was in the 1970's.
I was looking at these for a daily driver. I had a Specialized Sirrus Hybrid, which was great for asphalt trails, toodling around on paved streets. But my daily ride to work takes me through crushed lime rail trails, mud, sand, and crater-filled side streets. So instead of getting the Dolomite or the HItch, I opted for the Gravity Bullseye Monster from Bikes Direct. So far it seems like a pretty solid bike, but I have a feeling like my hybrid, I'll part ways with it and just get the Surly Long Haul Disk Trucker with 26" mountain bike tires at that point.
please do a video on the different style rear suspension....like a vertical vs a horizontal rear shock....i cant figure out the differences between the 2
They are actually completely different. For example vertical gives you a straighter travel of the rear wheel so a more xc style. On the other hand the horizontal is better for DH because it has more leverage going downhill and more responsive while breaking but it sucks to pedal on it. So the horizontal =sucky pedal platform but great responsiveness. Vertical= amazing pedal platform and not very responsive (doesn't move through travel as easy as horizontal). But it's all about your style of riding so if you are looking into one of these bikes go to your LBS and demo both styles. Good luck out there!
Seth's Bike Hacks I have a schwinn Biggity fat tire bike which is very simaliar to this one. I have ridden at dirt parks with mine and the rims did hold up well surprisingly. I upgraded the handlebars to 750mm bontraeger elite bars and stem, lever shifter, shimano deore derailleur, steel pedals and hydraulic disc brakes. I think if anyone does those simaliar upgrades to an inexpensive fat tire bike. It's great for someone who wants fat tires but are on a budget
A Drone I have a mongoose malus, w/ street tires(3" Duro Beach Bum's), MegaRange Freewheel, Shimano brake shifter lever, KMC X 8.9 3 chain, front & rear lights, luggage rack, bottle holder w/ stainless steel bottle, small aluminum air pump, phone tank bag, mirrors, bell, mini BMX bars, grips and a soft seat. I have under $500 in the whole thing new. I ride around the city at night, I've had the bike 2years with 1200 miles on it. It's still like New. I'm 43 & biked my whole life, this is my favorite bike, although I did peel all the mongoose decals off (I say its a Pacific Cycle)
these bikes are great quality.. i have the mongoose brutus fat bike, bought it 5 years ago and its still like new. its really hard pedaling against the wind. department stores arent even selling these fat tire bikes anymore in my area.
I remember when Mongoose was considered a higher end bike and sold right along side GT, Hutch, etc. at high end bike shops. Then they kind of fell off for awhile and next thing you know they are in Walmart.
On the wages most real people make 200.00 for any bike is a lot of money...its a shame we have been convinced that more expensive is better...when I was a kid mom took me down to Western Auto (a general store in the 70's ) I picked out a bike that looked the best , she paid for it and I ride it .....nothing else mattered but I had a bike...let's just ride and have fun and no be so up tight...its just a damn bike!!!
Ramsey Weaver c'mon man, you remember what that Schwinn your buddy had rode like right? That came at a premium of about double what most bikes cost, and damn they did last a long time. What Schwinn and Mongoose represent today is what absolutely sucks the life from a once prosperous middle class to the dwindling ranks they are today. however, I cannot rip on you for the choices your mom gave you. Mine took me to Montgomery Ward where I picked a Murray. Best wishes, and thanks for the flashback.....
However do let me make it clear I have 6 bikes mine include 1 Mongoose Fat bike, 2 Genesis 29er s , 1 Speaciazed Roll Elite , 1 Trek Fx 4", and 1 Diamondback Edgewood One of my 29er s was purchased from Walmart in 2011 and now has over 700 trouble free miles on it and is still going strong (just rode it earlier today) and looks brand new kept in my bike room at my house. It also depends on how you care and take care of them.... Other toys I have include my Honda Rancher 420 , Honda Recon 250 and an EZ Go golf cart all garage kept and well taken care of as well ... So be careful before you spit ...You never know what kind toys the next guy has!!! Good day mate!!!
Had a customer that had one of these for 8 months. Worked on his bottom bracket every 2 weeks. He was a paper boy, and when we got him on something new we didn't see him for 3 months. The wheels on this bike are super heavy and are not cut out like most fat tire bikes. Could probably use a smaller chain ringer. Tourney is okay for this price point. I'd probably get some different brakes and maybe something with a larger rotor to increase stopping power. Wheel upgrade may help with control issues as turning a wheel that weighs 5 lbs more than another makes a huge impact.
I have one with a motor ! You are completely right, its great for the price. It needs some upgrades but its great out of the box. It seems heavy but its probably strong. GL
Nice vid. And thankyou for using good music.I just bought a cheap fat bike. I'm lovin' it so far.I live near the beach and there's no hills but Im gonna have legs like a wrestler in no time!
I work at a bike shop. A customer brought us one in need of a new bottom bracket. The only distributor we could find who carried a replacement BB in the same obscure size has been out of stock for 8 weeks.
Dont be so hard on it , in the real world 250.00 is still a chunk of change for some...and the attention it gets Will make up for the other stuff. ..trust me!!! ...great video, thanks!
I got a bike given to me by my neighbour and it hadn't been used, it is a giant rock and it has a shimano tourney on it and It has no problem shifting it is instant and smooth, It actually shifts better than my specialized. however saying that anything shifts better than my specialized though, the only good part on it is the frame and it's debatable the rims too.
firstly thanks for the tips on how to master different skills and how to fix your bike. secondly you have just earned a sub and a like from me for making these awesome vids. keep it up
I know that this is probably way too late, but those rims aren't welded, they're pinned. It's a much cheaper joining technique that's used on low-end rims.
Good video and review of the bike. I bought one of these a couple of weeks ago from Walmart for $185. Wanted to try a fatbike but a decent one goes for TEN TIMES what the Dolomite costs. So far I have spent probably 10 hours lubing it properly, replacing the parts that were damaged in shipping (Pacific Cycle replaced them no charge) and upgrading it with bits from my old mountain bike. It kind of sucked before the upgraded derailleur, click shifter, bars, grips, seat, and brake levers. I added a 22 tooth chainring inside the stock 36 tooth and with a Shimano Megarange freewheel it climbs pretty well for a 50lb bike. If I really get into fat bikes I will buy a nice one but for now I'm pretty happy with the modded Dolomite.
I own one, had to change a few things including what Seth mentioned in the video. Though it's super heavy I have some fun riding it. Mostly in the city. I read that by changing tires you can make it lighter by 5 pounds! lol
I could choose between this or a nice hard tail Giant with great disc brakes and nice front suspension and after this video I definitely wanted the Giant
Certainly the giant would be better than the two hundred dollar fat bike. The reason it is likely only two hundred dollars is because it is obviously built down to a price that means cheap components with well the problems of cheap bikes as for the price well I'm thinking in the terms of Aussie dollars here giant and trek are the best brands.
Converted my walgoose dolo to electric. It's amazing once u got power to it. Although I did end up upgrading everything on it to the point the only part that is original is the frame and headset and bars. Maxxis tires, specialized rims, XD drive train, trp hydro brakes, rigid tripletree fork. This thing handles amazing at 20-35mph on the street. Haven't really tried any serious off-road but I'm welding up a rear swing arm to extend the wheelbase slightly and soak up some bumps at speed.
seth doesn't post as often as others, but when he does post you know it's going to be a video of very high quality
It’s more consistent than wonderbrads
Guys, check the Singletracks.com Podcast tomorrow for a Q/A they did with me last week. It should post late day or possibly Tuesday. Share it!

You know I haven't dropped one since about 50 videos ago?

I rode one of these for 3 years through western NY winters, bang for the buck best bike I've ever used.
"a sub-200 fatbike" ah the pre-covid world was such an innocent economic time
550 brand new :)))) I got mine for 180 off. For 340. Hah
Yea I just saw it on Amazon for 430 😅

Can you please do a trail review of this bike and a $1000 fatbike, comparison on a trail to see how much slower they are than your trail bike.
Your house must be getting awfully crowded these days!
At 47 lbs we know he's not hanging this one on the wall!
Haha, that's the first thing I thought of when he started unboxing it.

Maybe you could use the current n+1 situation to make a homemade bike storage solution tutorial (aside from the closet).

When he opened the small park tool box , My mind went to his current patk tool set up lol. Dudes awesome
Looks good to wheelie
"The paint job is nice it helps hide the weld " rather have strong welds
Props to Seth for writing the entire script as a review
please do a video on the different style rear suspension....like a vertical vs a horizontal rear shock....i cant figure out the differences between the 2
They are actually completely different.
+Cameron Griego thank u so much, this is exactilly what i was looking for
Agreed
+Jacob Wanner no problem wish u luck with ur new bike!
I love how you think Mr. Seth that is going to be a super cool video!
At that price I doubt those rims are welded. Pinned or sleeved most likely
you're likely right about that... unless they're spot welded on the inside. I guess I'll need to tear her down at some point and find out!
I'm 43 & biked my whole life, this is my favorite bike, although I did peel all the mongoose decals off (I say its a Pacific Cycle)
they are welded in in the Republic of China, they really work a torch well in Asia
these bikes are great quality.. i have the mongoose brutus fat bike, bought it 5 years ago and its still like new. its really hard pedaling against the wind. department stores arent even selling these fat tire bikes anymore in my area.
How often do you ride the bike?
@@ShepherdschapelYTexplainsbible i ride almost every day. the bike only needs new tires, the rest of the bike is still in great shape.
How did you make that ramp? I was thinking about making one.
Never mind. I found out how to make it.
Ramsey Weaver I said the same thing!! Dude was like this is a cheap 200 dollar bike. And I laughed.
If you want a cheapy bike then go ahead but bikes are much more than just the sum of their parts, just like cars.
However do let me make it clear I have 6 bikes mine include 1 Mongoose Fat bike, 2 Genesis 29er s , 1 Speaciazed Roll Elite , 1 Trek Fx 4", and 1 Diamondback Edgewood
One of my 29er s was purchased from Walmart in 2011 and now has over 700 trouble free miles on it and is still going strong (just rode it earlier today) and looks brand new kept in my bike room at my house.
Festivejelly Please read my" However " post
Had a customer that had one of these for 8 months. Worked on his bottom bracket every 2 weeks. He was a paper boy, and when we got him on something new we didn't see him for 3 months. The wheels on this bike are super heavy and are not cut out like most fat tire bikes. Could probably use a smaller chain ringer. Tourney is okay for this price point. I'd probably get some different brakes and maybe something with a larger rotor to increase stopping power. Wheel upgrade may help with control issues as turning a wheel that weighs 5 lbs more than another makes a huge impact.
I wonder if he wrote everything he said in the review LMAO
There's people like that
Seth I've always enjoyed your videos and always will !
let me guess your gonna ride it in the water
How did you know
I have one with a motor ! You are completely right, its great for the price. It needs some upgrades but its great out of the box. It seems heavy but its probably strong. GL
Would tou recomend to buy it to customize it?
Felix grandgirard no
Nice vid. And thankyou for using good music.I just bought a cheap fat bike. I'm lovin' it so far.I live near the beach and there's no hills but Im gonna have legs like a wrestler in no time!
Hang on a sec... you saw the Tourney groupset on the internet for $6?
Phil Adams just derallieur I think
This bike is perfect for a cold, snowy winter.
im back from feeding my weasel to couch
Next video- Bikes vs salt water? Can't wait!
Salty Dolomite!
Thanks for the review! Over here they are sold as "Ridgeyard" and for 320€.
i like vids like this😃
I work at a bike shop. A customer brought us one in need of a new bottom bracket. The only distributor we could find who carried a replacement BB in the same obscure size has been out of stock for 8 weeks.
can u give ur broken bikes to me?? is that possible?? 😀
Keep wishing buddy
"For now all I have to do is stop pedaling and the bike comes to a standstill pretty fast." That is golden!
I pumped my tires to the max 20 psi and as long as the wind isnt blowing towards me it just keeps rolling with barley any effort.
What is your day job that pays for all these damn bikes?? Jealous
Dont be so hard on it , in the real world 250.00 is still a chunk of change for some...and the attention it gets Will make up for the other stuff. ..trust me!!! ...great video, thanks!
The paint is gorgeous
LOL my bike is 14 pounds
Got a balance bike ?

Good video keep up with the good work!!!!
Always watching your videos as soon as it goes on haha
I really think your reviews are helpful, thank you 😊!
That means he's going to break him rims soon, jumping off curbs.
I read that by changing tires you can make it lighter by 5 pounds! lol
I wish you posted more stuff. I love watching the vids🙌
Bike freak 🚲
That was a great outdo with the waves going In and out.
Hey Seth
The price on that bike more than doubled. Put it on a diet and flip it 👍. That would be a cool video.
Fat Tire Bikes are meant for snow pack trails. They are popular on cross country ski trails in Colorado.
I love your videos u deserve more subs, keep up the good work and keep uploading!!!!!!!!!!
Nice video Seth, waiting for torture test and basics upgrades.. Best videos for bikers on Internet.. Venezuelan follower :)
Awesome video man, very helpful and detailed. 👍💯
what's odd is my Trek Marlin 5 came with the Tourney. It broke while I was just riding around and I ended up upgrading to an Acera. Worth it.
