Take a look at some of the more than 3,500 models on the tables.
Do you like modeling eye-candy? So do we! That's why Mark Savage and Aaron Skinner went to the 2018 International Plastic Modelers' Society/USA National Convention - to marvel at some amazing builds!
They met with a few of the winners and found out how they created their masterpieces.

My dad was a member of IPMS back in the 60's. He was deep into it. Planes, subs, ships, tanks, and the military figures with the painted eyeballs....never did he paint one that looked crosseyed. His little workshop had nearly 800 built models and more than 3000 still in the boxes; i counted them all. When he passed mom got some good $ for the unbuilt stuff and sold the built kits to one collector. In the mid 70's he got into guns, big time and never built another model until the day he died. Mr. Meticulous in everything he did. I remember going to the mailbox and pulling out that IMPS monthly newsletter countless times.
Scratch builds are a whole other level. Amazing
can just imagine how hard a time it was to judge the winners as they were so many well-done exhibits! Good job all!
All those wonderful builds. I wish I could still build models. I was never close to as good as those from the show, but I loved doing it. Cheers to all who entered.
I have always admired people who could build dioramas! I built models as a kid (but that was 55 to 60 years ago)... These are awesome!
I remember reading about Doug Bower's scratchbuilt German AA boat. Amazing skill, a true piece of art.
i am a modeller too, they are the king of scale modelling!love their masterpiece, keep on building sirs!!
This kind of dedication, beauty, authenticity and overall excellence restores my faith in humanity!!!
Incredible work by all. The Vega even had gaskets!
Glad to see Chris Sobak's Army AA/FC there. I watched this thing come together over the last 6 or so years on Modelcarsmag forums and it is first rate in every way. Congrats Chris. From Dragline...
Yes me too. Way to go Chris
The workmanship is absolutely amazing!!!!
I had to stop midways of the AA/FC model interview ,all are incredible but this guy took 7 years and it shows ,he even has new header gaskets between the tubes and the head Im blwn away and she 's in the house ....amazing ....
Beautiful stuff man! I'm a modeler in Montreal and we don't have an IPMS here anymore. It's great to see these videos from contests so I can see what I'm missing at least
I want to see some Canadian craftsmanship! I love Godin guitars :)
An A1 demonstration of craftsmanship and dedication. An inspiration to other model-makers like me. Thanks for posting.
Absolutely amazingLY BEAUTIFUL .. the detail in these models seem almost come alive. Art certainly takes in many forms. Amazingly beautiful work to all. thank you for SHARING.
Yes agree that ship won. I was in London somewhere at a mall on the weekend and the mall put on dioramas on the weekends... man the military layouts was the most amazing toy stuff I've ever seen... blows these out the water.
Aren't some people so clever and so patient as well.
Having a F-100D lined up in the thunderbirds 1967 markings by CAM pro decals the one shown here instantly surprised me as I haven't seen many builds of the 1/32 trumpeter F-100 floatiung around. Looks great I hope to achieve a similar finish.
These are all fantastic, but I think I like THAT one the best!
Such amazing talent. These modellers are on another level to amateurs such as myself. Wow, just WOW!!! Subscribed.
There is just so much detail spent on these works of art. I've always been a person that enjoys the minute detail the modlers put into achieving a finished end. What I never see though is a photographic zoomed micro lens view. I know the equipment is scarce and probably expensive... But is there no one that captures.serious close up views ? Instead of panned views then zooming in.
Id love to be taken into that world for a life size experience. You know of any YT creator that does this ?
These are the guys that inspire me. Damn fine build all of them....Love it !
Some of these look just like real life, only smaller. Amazing skills
Amazing,...wished we had access of you tube in the 80s...
Wow. All of these are impressive!
Amazing quality...the German fishing boat is unreal.
Congrats to all the modellers, lots of work
That KM boat is AWESOME!
An experienced modeler told me that when you go to these places you'll either get really inspired or extremely depressed lol.
No reason to feal depressed at seeing beautiful work at a model contest. These modelers who are really good weren't allways that good, because they had to learn at the beginning also! You can't run before you can walk right? Every one there is willing and proud to answer questions so don't be afraid of them! It makes the hobby grow. Jimi Hendrix taught anyone who wanted to play guitar and he is theee guitar God even to this day!

@@emperorgameling5064 I'm a nerd? In case that's what you're calling me, go straight to hell and all the way down!!
@@vincentlussier8264 Oh gee what makes you think I'm calling you a nerd, was it the part where I called you a nerd? Nerd.
@@emperorgameling5064 I did see the word nerd on your first reply.
I think they are all pretty spectacular honestly
I could spend a week in there. Amazing skills.
The first boat looks Magnificent
That Mercury Redstone cutaway is jaw dropping!
Yes it is!
That Oklahoma salvage model just blew my mind. So great.
WOW ... That is a lot off dedication................fantastic.
John do
All very nice. I will be starting my scaled down version of the "Black Pearl". I'm new to this hobby so.
Fantastic work here!
Superb work on show there. well done all.
Kriegfishkutter and dragster are best for me. Great details and great ideas! ;)
Excellent work. BTW it's a 37mm/3.7cm gun on the first model.
Amazing jobs! My favs: The kriegsfischkutter and the Mercury Redstone, but anyway all works are brilliant
they all deserve applause .
would liked to have seen more of the Bailey bridge diarama, the bridge must have taken ages alone.
I saw a terrific WWII film with Elliot Gould and Redford with *"that Bailey Crap"* and a fine Brit actor who stood up in his Brit Scout Car with his field glasses. *Michael Caine 1977 A Bridge Too Far.* I sub to several model and RC channels. Once it's in your blood....
Some amazing Models great job everyone!
Very beautiful dioramas
very nice work.
Very inspiring to watch. Thanks for the vid👍
Inspiring, love the Hudson episode, brilliant!
iv got one word to say "Impressive"
The models are fabulous. The video sells itself. Boom chicka music not needed.
The Striker Engineering vehicle is dope just because I build those things at 4:08. The Mercury Redstone title through me off but found out it was for the previous model Rocket. I also dont regognise that vehicle due to the Hatch layout either, wonder if its real or the builders own creation.
The righting of the Oklahoma really looked amazing. Trying to capture such a monumental task in scale form accurately.... can't even imagine. Wonder if the person building this did so in light of the renewed efforts during past several years to identify the unknown dead that were found aboard her when she was salvaged?
Hi! Actually my dad made that model. He’s from Oklahoma and so has a soft spot for her. He saw the documentary of the unknown and so knew about this. Thanks for liking his work!
One word for the winners....WOW
Indeed!
Love the first one and Westland Lysander.
Wow! All are amazing
Great Models, great Video - thanks for sharing 🚂❤️
This is Ultramodelling . Just like God reduced the real thing in size ! I would buy any of these How much Gentlemen ?!
The “Snake” was my favorite driver when I was a kid. Nice to see his funny car here.
Wow! Thanks for the video!
3:25 I built that kit back in the 1970s, when I was in my teens. My car did *not* look anything like that when I was finished.
They all are winners! Wow!
Don’t know why this was recommended, but it’s pretty cool.
Words fail me at 4:18 the detail that went into this APC is phenomenal. The Coca Cola case the cooler inside that looks like a 60s-70s era Coleman similar to one I had. Also the Kraut gun boat that is SERIOUSLY BOSS. WWII Armor was my era growing up in the 50s-60s. Checkout dragonman.com out near Colorado Springs. Museum all guns Armor is OPERATIONAL Half Tracks he has it all. He's a Character!!
Yo that German boat reminds me of that from arcade classic, I believe it was Metal Slug.
awesome models !!
awesome builds thank you for sharing
These are all just amazing. Wish I w as s this skilled
Winners. Truly.
I like the coloring of the hudson. gets the contents right
Impressive! Inspiring! Thank you
Bonkers stuff!
I want to see that model of the GS-4
awesome!
Amazing works.
I love Sully's Hudson cruise diorama. Is possible to get more infos about plane and figures used? Some are not of my same opinion here, criticizing because of some "mistakes". I thus appreciate the idea to give honour and commemorate a crew who saved many souls. That diorama has its own soul, others dioramas haven't.. Best congratulations to its maker from Italy :)
Hi! That’s actually my dads build. So sorry I didn’t know this video existed until today. I’ll get that info back to you here in a bit. I sent your response to him and he will text me back soon. He used liquid water on this build which didn’t survive the heat of the travel to the show. Kind of depressing because it was one of the best build. The liquid water just didn’t hold up to really capture it.
Hi Corinne! Thank you very much! I had in my mind that diorama but no more the title of the video. Now I have saved it. Lot of questions for him: Please ask him if boats are scratch built, which factory makes the plane as well passengers. Last, if he made by himself the decals with the name of the airline. I bought some planes 1/144, have to check if I bought that model of A-300/320 Thank you again 🙂
Kriegsfischkutter!! Got to love the Kriegsmarine for that.. One way to ensure the monopoly over those North Sea fishing grounds. A fresh herring with a cut onion for the Fuhrer! :D Seriously, awesome job though - love the idea and your work. Pretty good.
WW2 modelling is always amazing
Amazing stuff!
so beautiful!
Does anyone know if there is more pictures of all of the show
Puro talento
Hello, exzellent great work Well done Cheers Peter Wonisch Schweiz 🇨🇭
anybody knows about the first diorama, the train scrapyard? This is stunning!
0:53 塗裝的真是漂亮
Amazing! Too bad I have so called "essential tremor" (my hands have been shaking a bit since around age 10-12, so manipulating small things is.. not _entirely_ impossible, but I can't do really fine details) and I have little patience. XD
Haven't built a model in over 30 years so really just curious, would using a 3d printer really still fall in the catagory of "scratch built"?
Are they itchy? What's with all the scratching?
i know right ;)
"90% scratch built from a kit" what does that mean? 2:18
I had the pleasure of working with the greatest diorama builder in the world Adam Morrison. Check out his military dioramas, you won't be disappointed. 👍
What is that on the deck of the "Kriegskutter"
A torpedo with wings ?
Paravanes, I suspect.
Espetacular
The military vehicle should've had a case of RockStar energy drinks and Otis Spunkmeier cookies on it, EVERY friggin' vehicle in Iraq had cases of that stuff on them!!! Awesome model, best of show maybe.
Man all that is Nice
some are really detailed but too neat, they miss that rugeddness if you know what i mean
I just want to say.......HOW THE HELL DO YOU DO THIS!!!!!!!!!
Practice and patience .....And then some more practice and patience lol
Awesome
Fantastisch!!!
I do like a good diorama! The German boat is great, it has a lot of atmosphere. But I think it's funny he did all that work from scratch but then added the anchor and life-boat which he has to point out "Completely from scratch... except...." 😫 Still great work though.😎
WOW incredible. BUT I guess the title should be only scratchbuilt models will win. Right?
There all good
It would be a 3.7 cm or a 37 mm.
I was thinking the same, but maybe he was referring to the real life diameter of the barrel? But yeah you're right.
