The head of the art team for Dimension 20 has this sign in his office that's like "The Creative Process: 1. This is awesome 2. This is hard 3. This is shit 4. I am shit 5. This might be ok 6. This is awesome" as a reminder to push through it and just do the art. I always thought I needed a schedule and a well thought out plan for writing so I never really wrote anything but I'm trying to stop that in 2024 and just write what I want when I want it
wow, this is amazing! Thank you so much for sharing this because 10000 per cent this is correct. I love how universal the creation of art is. ❤ Just write, that's all you have to do. You already have everything you need ❤ Thanks for watching and commenting!

One of the things that’s helped me write more has been similar to your advice of not being a perfectionist: Just add notes. Then add more notes. Then combine some of the notes into something that sounds right to you. Then notice you’ve finished writing half a page. Keep writing half a page.
I understand you don't want to do more writing advice, and frankly, the world is inundated with the stuff. I will say though: you have a gift for making a total stranger to your channel feel like I was having a heart-to-heart with someone who could see straight into my life and you managed to get me out of my own way. So there's that! Thank you so much.
Fascinating how you said that you don't think you have anything new to give to the writing advice community, and yet, your video is the only one I've watched where I've felt called out 100% of the time. I actually took some great advice from it! Especially the procrastination parts.😅 Thank you!!🙏❤

Thanks for the advice. I rarely leave a comment but I really appreciate your honesty. I struggle with thinking that everything that I do, including writing, needs to be perfect. I love writing and I am passionate about it but most days I struggle with just getting started. Deep down I knew that I didn't necessarily have to write every single day, but I still pressured myself to do it but what would end up happening was that I would lose momentum, passion and the desire to write. Honest people like you are rare because most writers go on and on about how important it is to do everything the same way over and over like they are genetic robots. More power to them for being more disciplined than I am but I appreciate that you talk about the need to let go of perfection and just be myself. Keep up the good work!!!

And this is the first video of yours I’ve ever come across- not at all jarring. Subscribed ✅ love and appreciation from London 🇬🇧
Thanks for doing this video. I am currently stuck in an abyss of productive procrastination and have let well meaning writing advice creep into my soul, but this reminded me how it always is more enjoyable for me when I just write without caring. So that's what I'm going to do (as soon as I get out of my next zoom meeting 🤣)
I'm glad this inspired you to keep going! I just told my friend yesterday to "let yourself write" so this is definitely a universal experience! Good luck on your writing 🥰🥰 Thanks for watching and commenting
So grateful that you overcame your self doubt to make and post this advice video. Your approach in presenting as your authentic self caused the advice to resonate and actually penetrate my productive procrastinating shell I'd created around myself. Thank you!
I don't want to or have any plans to ever write for a living. I've been building up a story inside my head for the past 12 years or more of my life, and I recently decided to write it down. My best friend loves it and it feels good to have an audience member, but 99% of why I'm writing is to get those ideas out of my head and fully realize them, for my own sanity's sake. I have a full-time, 40 hours a week job, and other hobbies to go along with it, so I only wrote one chapter in 2022, and 5 chapters in 2023. For 2024, my new year's resolution is to complete a full chapter every single month, and so far, I've been able to do it. I sit down to write about an hour, sometimes more every day, and I've managed to write up to 8000 words in a month. Granted, this is all made possible by just how passionate I am about this story, and It would feel way too daunting otherwise. Whenever I hear full-time writers writing anywhere from 50k to 100k words per month, of course I feel discouraged and disappointed at my own skills. But no matter at what pace I do this, the most important part is that it is getting done, and I'm very proud of the result.
I understand that comparison can make us feel inadequate but I love that you shared your journey so much! The fact that you are sticking to it is amazing and I have no doubt you are going to finish this story. It doesn't matter what others are doing because every story is written one word at a time. You're amazing! Keep it up! Thank you for being here 🥰
Actually, that was really good advice. 🤗Consistency at the moment is mondays and wednesdays, and whatever I can get in on the weekends. And I put the productive procrastination tasks on the other days, when I am too tired to write after my workday. 😉
I have the same issue! I’ve created a schedule for writing an hour a day and that has failed several times already. Now I’m lucky if i can wrote ten sentences 😂 you got a new subscriber ❤
Thank you so much for being here! ❤ I create schedules for myself all the time and sometimes they are amazing, other times they are super detrimental (to me!) Just remember that books are written one sentence (word) at a time, so if all you can manage is ten sentences, THAT IS AMAZING. I also love how you said "has failed me" instead of "I failed" because you didn't fail at all! Thank you for being here, friend! ❤
Thanks so much for posting this video Megan, even if you’re not a big fan of writing advice :) I wrote almost daily since the start of January and have even a little stuck the past few days. These tips were a breath of fresh air

@@meganbrush I just have a simple question. As stated in the video, the inner workings of writing shouldn’t be stressed on. That being said, I do wanna expand my vocab to expand my creative writing. Is that…stressing on the inner details?
@@rubycomplex1767 it depends on how you approach it. If you think there is absolutely no way you can ever write because you feel you have a limited vocab, then yes, it definitely is stressing and you should just write. But wanting to expand your vocabulary is a fantastic way to get better at writing and a good goal to have! Just don't let it stop you 😊
Really appreciated this video. I’ve been struggling to get back into my writing habit and this has inspired me so much! Some of the best advice out there it’s simple straightforward and realistic. Thanks for sharing ❤
Just found this channel and it couldn't have been more timely! I absolutely love the tips you give here. As a chronic perfectionist myself, hearing from another (ex?)perfectionist felt as though you were talking directly to me. I relate so much to the struggles you mentioned. Seriously thank you so much for posting this video. I'm going to come back to this when I feel myself slipping back into old habits. You've earned a new subscriber! 🤝
YAY! Welcome friend, I'm so glad you are here 💜 I'm so happy this video found you and resonated with you! And oh no, definitely don't consider myself an ex-perfectionist haha. "That, my friend, is Productive Procrastination and I am the QUEEN of it." A CHALLENGER APPEARS. I have never finished ANY fanfic series I've ever started writing, for instance. FANFIC. 😂
Ooohh touche! I get this so hard though 😂 We tell ourselves good job when we're just avoiding the tasks! Go write that Fanfic! 👏 Thanks for watching and commenting 🥰
You are right. This was a "very interesting Megan today." Haha "Balance is a verb, not a state of being" is such a powerful and eye-opening quote. I think I've heard similar things before (just worded a little differently), but having it put so succinctly really makes me think. What can I do to incorporate elements of what I would consider to be "balance" in my day-to-day life? Food for thought, I suppose. Anyway, you gave a lot of good tips in this video, and I'm really appreciative of them. Thank you kindly! 😃
Sleepy Megan gets chaotic! ❤️ thanks for hanging in there haha I love that it resonated with you. As long as you're trying your best, it's enough 🥰 Thanks for being here ❤️
My productive procrastination is talking to myself telling me “Your Plot Sucks, nobody cares about that weak azz plot” 😂😂😂 and this my friend makes me push away from this novel I’m trying to write 😂 Thank you for sharing because you hit the hammer on the nail and I can relate… This is inspirational for me.. Thank you so much! 📖💻📝✍️🫡
That sounds terrible! But I know that voice, I definitely have my own that says those lies! Don't listen to that voice, just keep writing. You got this. Thanks for watching and commenting 🥰🥰
I'm a digital artist and your video is a pure GOLD! SO relatable and so true. Thank you for reminding me of some of them. 😊 Btw, if you ask me, I'd like more advice from you haha Take care ✌🏼
One of things that stops me is the perfectionism. The fear that I won't match my own expectations.. and that I must get all the pre-writing research, set-up work done before writing that draft. I also realized that I do horrible without some sort of deadline. So -- I give myself deadlines. Does it actually matter if I miss a deadline? No. But it helps me set some sort of timer that tells me I need to be close to the end of this phase, cause I am planning on starting onto the next phase. Seeing "3 weeks till deadline" on the calendar keeps me in check! Plus, that hour of morning writing is not for me. I already wake up at 4am to get ready for the day job, since I clock in at 6am. As I told my husband, I am not waking up earlier than that to write. So, I come home - take a nap to reset the brain and try to get a bit of time in the evening. I have a notebook and pen I keep with me for random notes & ideas. so when I'm not at the computer, I can still feel like I am making progress. This is nice when I'm zoning off watching something in the evening or getting ready in the morning.
That's wonderful! I think you've found the right place because I love talking process and hearing about people's process too! Thanks for watching and commenting 🥰
she says: "don't seek out writing advice to procrastinate writing." me: watching her video because I am seeking out writing advice to procrastinate writing😅
😬😬 BUT I do think it's great to seek out writing advice when you need or want to, just try to balance it with still writing (like maybe don't use your writing time for it). Either way, you're doing great! Keep going 🥰 Thanks for being here 🖤
people need to stop reading shitty books written by CEOs and just watch this video i'm not a writer but this is a video everyone needs to see so good thank you.
I know you said you'll never do this again, but (besides the listed steps) this didn't even feel like a tips or advice video. it felt like a vlog of your experience with learning how to deal with your inner critique. Which we all struggle with! its so easy to succumb to that feeling like you 'have' to listen to listen to that voice, when in reality its just another voice [aka you are not your thoughts] basically, I would love to have another rhetorical conversation with you.
Wait, isn't mediocracy a different word from mediocrity? 🤔One to do with government, the other with ... idk what ity as a suffix actually means :P
YES! Thank you for catching that. As a word nerd, I appreciate it 🥰 Going to pin this because it's a distinction and I mispoke!

Thanks for being here 🥰❤️
I needed this so badly. Thank you!
I needed this smart, practical reminder! Thanks for posting!
Thank YOU for watching and commenting :)
I struggle big time with perfectionism and procrastination - I laughed when you listed #5, oh boy, so true - and this video was exactly what I needed to hear today. Thank you, Megan! I’m new to your channel but just subscribed. :)

I just wanted to say I’m so so glad that you made this video. I really needed this right now! 🙏 Such a breath of fresh air. I can’t tell you how much so many of these hurdles resonated with me! And this is the first video of yours I’ve ever come across- not at all jarring. Subscribed ✅ love and appreciation from London 🇬🇧
Yay!! Welcome! Thank you for being here 🥰
I'm so glad this video resonated with you. 💕
Hey, you can do more videos like this. It was not bad at all, and as a junior writer, advices that differ from the typical ones are appreciated.
Thank you so much! I'm so glad you found it helpful 🥰 good luck on your writing!
Good luck on your writing 🥰🥰
Thanks for watching and commenting
These truly are the greatest tips for authors!!
I'm so glad you think so! Thank you for being here 🥰🥰
So grateful that you overcame your self doubt to make and post this advice video. Your approach in presenting as your authentic self caused the advice to resonate and actually penetrate my productive procrastinating shell I'd created around myself. Thank you!
Oh I'm so glad! Thank you for the kind words ❤ I hope you get to creating soon!
Thanks for being here ❤
thank you for calling me out on all of my creative excuses LOL i appreciate your tips!
Lol so much calling out done in this video but I am right there alongside you!
Thanks so watching and commenting 🥰
That sounds like a fantastic schedule!! Big fan of the productive procrastination tasks 😂🥰
Thanks for watching and commenting❤️
I'm so glad to hear it! Your words are always going to be there for you so don't worry.🖤 Sometimes, we just need a little breather!

Thanks for watching and being here 🥰
This was very helpful, thank you!
Thank you for watching and commenting! I'm so glad you found it helpful 🥰
I loved this video! Plain and simple
Thank you so much! I'm glad it resonated 🥰
Thank YOU for watching and commenting! Good luck getting back to writing again. 💜 I love your handle name!
My kind of gal! Natural, real, give amazing value❤

Still struggling big time (all the time) with this fun little mind of mine! BUT I'm happy to share what's worked for me to make creative life a little lighter.
Thanks for watching, commenting, and subscribing! 💜💜

Thanks for watching and commenting 🥰
I LOVE THIS SO MUCH!!! Thank you for your words of encouragement for creatives of all types! Motivated me so much❤
Oh I'm SO GLAD! Thank you for being here ❤ Go create, you can do it!!
You are right. This was a "very interesting Megan today." Haha
"Balance is a verb, not a state of being" is such a powerful and eye-opening quote.
❤️ thanks for hanging in there haha
I love that it resonated with you. As long as you're trying your best, it's enough 🥰
Thanks for being here ❤️
It was interesting and practical. Glad you posted.
I'm so glad you watched and commented! Thank you 🥰
My productive procrastination is talking to myself telling me “Your Plot Sucks, nobody cares about that weak azz plot” 😂😂😂 and this my friend makes me push away from this novel I’m trying to write 😂 Thank you for sharing because you hit the hammer on the nail and I can relate… This is inspirational for me.. Thank you so much! 📖💻📝✍️🫡
That sounds terrible! But I know that voice, I definitely have my own that says those lies! Don't listen to that voice, just keep writing. You got this.
Thanks for watching and commenting 🥰🥰

Your skin looks great ❤
Thank you so much 🥰🥰
One of things that stops me is the perfectionism.
I love the idea of deadlines! I do that when I'm nearing the end of a project to help me stay focused.
Thank you for being here 🥰💕
Thank you for this video!! Really needed it 💜
Thank you for watching and commenting! ❤️ I'm so glad it resonated.
Yes!!!!❤
Thank you!! 🥰
I like to hear about people's process. Even if it's not instructional.
That's wonderful! I think you've found the right place because I love talking process and hearing about people's process too!
Thanks for watching and commenting 🥰
OH HOW I STRUGGLE with routine... there's a certain cartoon that is my go-to to explain this to people...routine-->excitement-->routine (Cathy Thorne)
You must be a kindred spirit. 🥰 I'm so glad you understand because it's a struggle for me big time.
Thanks for watching and commenting 🖤❤️
she says: "don't seek out writing advice to procrastinate writing."
me: watching her video because I am seeking out writing advice to procrastinate writing😅
Heh heh. Didn't mean to call you out, but I'm so glad you are here 🥰🥰
Good luck on your writing! 🖤
Called out for writing advice procrastination … 😅 For me personally, I spend far too much time watching author interviews and ‘writing process’ vids 😭
😬😬 BUT I do think it's great to seek out writing advice when you need or want to, just try to balance it with still writing (like maybe don't use your writing time for it).
Either way, you're doing great! Keep going 🥰
Thanks for being here 🖤
Thanks Megan
Thank YOU for watching and commenting ❤
people need to stop reading shitty books written by CEOs and just watch this video
i'm not a writer but this is a video everyone needs to see
so good
thank you.
Thank you so much, this is so kind! I'm glad you enjoyed the video.🥰
Thanks for watching and commenting ❤️
thank you❤
thank YOU 🥰
I'm watching this while trying to think of video ideas. Am I procrastinating? I don't know lol
It happens to the best of us 😂
Thanks for watching and commenting 🥰
I know you said you'll never do this again, but (besides the listed steps) this didn't even feel like a tips or advice video. it felt like a vlog of your experience with learning how to deal with your inner critique. Which we all struggle with! its so easy to succumb to that feeling like you 'have' to listen to listen to that voice, when in reality its just another voice [aka you are not your thoughts]
basically, I would love to have another rhetorical conversation with you.
Oh thank you so much for the kind words! I think another rhetorical conversation has to happen 🥰
Thanks for being here! ❤️
