2015 Mustang EcoBoost "Fake" Sound Myth Busted!

  • Jump to 8:50 for the direct back-to-back sound comparison. In this video I illustrate just how fake this "fake" sound is in the 2015 Mustang EcoBoost. Many people have discounted the engine sound of this car because Ford added a "Sound Symposer" to enchance the sound. As you can hear in the video, it does very little and the difference is hardly noticeable.

    God, all these people bitching about how many cylinders the car has. Nobody's complained about it being slow, but I guess that's because it makes more power and torque than all of the Ford GTs built up to 2004. Look around at what people are calling sports cars now a days. They're all FWD sedans and hatchbacks with 180 to 250 HP. If you want to break 300 HP, they'll make you break the bank too. The EcoBoost makes more than 300 HP and 300 lb-ft of torque. That's more than every Ford GT built up to 2004. And it's not like some motorcycle engine that doesn't make any power until 3000 RPM, it makes peak torque around 2000 RPM and holds it to redline. Even more amazing - this engine is available in the base model. Most "sports cars" don't even offer this kind of power, let alone make it standard. In the spirit of every Mustang before it, the EcoBoost Mustang brings high dollar performance at an affordable price. So if you ask me, this is one of the best Mustangs to date.

  • @olgoogis4158
    @olgoogis4158 9 ปีที่แล้ว +3

    They call it "Active Noise Control". It projects sound waves through the stereo to cancel out unwanted sound waves from the engine. It's exactly what a muffler does but in this case the cab is a muffler for the passengers with better control over the sound (which is smart). People change their mufflers all the time to get different sounds. If you consider this faking then you have to consider all vehicles have a "fake" sound via mufflers (wise up people). It's just another way to control noise (similar to a muffler).

    • @242HP
      @242HP 9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Actually, there are two systems at work to control the interior noise in the Mustang: Active Noise Cancellation (which is designed to reduce/remove unwanted noise from the cabin) and Active Noise Control, which is designed to enhance/amplify the noise of the engine and funnel it into the cabin through the stereo's speakers.

    • @olgoogis4158
      @olgoogis4158 9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It's just another way to improve the sound. Which again is similar to the idea of a muffler. It shouldn't be called "fake" because anything (vehicle shape/material, asphalt/dirt ground, exhaust length, no exhaust, etc.) can change the sound. I'd call it fake when it's an electric car with V8 sounds played over the stereo.

  • @alexandersekora716
    @alexandersekora716 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    The sound is actually completely fake. A company called Cobb tuning actually managed to isolate the part of the ECU making the sound. With the engine at idle they tricked the Ecu into thinking the engine was running at various RPMs and wouldn't you know it sounded like a horribly synthesized V8.
    That's what Ford did with the Eco-Boosts. It doesn't cancel out the actual engine sound, but it does cover it up with the sound of a V8 so that it's driver's feel better about themselves.
    Here's the name of their TH-cam video.

    This is that exclusive content right here! Haha nice vid man! Thanks for taking the time to do the comparison. The difference in sound has definitely been highly exaggerated. I'd like to see these guys who claim it's a significant difference actually differentiate which is which in an audio test. Maybe that's another video idea if you're short on vids: Mix some engine notes with and w/o the fuse, labeled A, B, C, etc.. Then have people comment (or answer a google survey to prevent bias) which sound they prefer/is fake or not, and then a week later you reveal the actual sources. Just a thought! I saw that on a guitar comparison video once and I actually ended up preferring the sound of the cheaper guitar, even though I was convinced the other one was definitely better lol...

      really good observation there was a lot more bass in the "fuse in" startup chime. That makes me wonder, a 30amp fuse would not be necessary for a "sound symposer" amp. That must be the fuse for the sound system amp because you're looking at 450watts+ for a 30amp fuse. So maybe the "fuse out" run still had the sound symposer working but not fully due to pulled amp fuse. Id really like to see this done again with a mic right next to the door speaker.

    Perhaps Ford was afraid of it sounding "too much" like the powerplant that's in it. With the fuse out, it sounded like an old Focus of mine. Not to be insulting, they just use the same type of engine. Ford evidently didn't want that type of association to be made with the model. While the sound made w/fuse in is slightly more appealing and less harsh, it is still fake in the sense that it is not what the engine sounds like. Hearing the engine inside the car does not sound the same as hearing it outside. To me that's kind of insulting in a way, because the people that get this model know what they're getting. They're not some meathead v8 enthusiast buying the car to complain about how "faggy" it sounds day in and day out. So it's disingenuous and ultimately unnecessary, not to mention occupying a sound system that is better left alone for music. It's novel, and some may appreciate it, sure. But regardless of what word you choose, it is still a direct lie in the fact that it is an altered sound than what you would be hearing on the other side of that firewall.

    • @android01978
      @android01978 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I tend to agree. You put a decent sound system in a car and then abuse it by using it to make engine noises. Better to leave the engine to make engine noises (even if it doesn't have the throaty v8 rumble) and the sound system to make music.

    I definitely heard a difference with the fuse in, It was beefier and more aggressive sounding. It's not night and day but it was more of a difference than you are letting on. I would really like to see less bias on this channel, most notably in your car reviews, I know you have to appease dealerships because they give you the cars to review but it's all sunshine and rainbows. I want to see more critical reviews rather than saying every car looks nice and aggressive and every car handles well for what it is; that's just not good reviewing.

    I have owned 3 different MR2's and have no problem with a proper 4 cylinder engine in the right car, but this is ridiculous.
    A mustang should have a V-8. Yeah its still available but every time an ecoboost gets purchased its a vote against the
    V-8. One day the mustang might be all electric. Just kill me now.....

    • @Andrizza
      @Andrizza 9 ปีที่แล้ว +18

      That is completely the wrong way of looking at it. Every person who buys a I4 would probably not have bought the V8 anyway, they'd have gone for the V6... And it's all very well saying that for the US, but Ford wants this car to be sold in the world market. And in the UK, where i'm from, it's $6 a gallon. If you wanted a Mustang and the V8 was the only option, it would sell very poorly. However giving people a powerful large bore 4 cyl, means it's exponentially increase the interest in the car. If you get a V8 stang in the UK, you have to accept that top gauge taxing and huge fuel bills.

      there have been some stories going around that ford stated that by 2017 they will end v8 production.... that is very sad specially for the mustang... I just hope that GM keeps making v8s.... the day the corvette won't have a v8 is the day american muscle loses my interest...

    • @Guy_de_Loimbard
      @Guy_de_Loimbard 9 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      Right, a Mustang should only have a V8 if you ignore the entire heritage and history of the car, going back to the very first one that rolled off the line -- with a 6-cylinder. The Mustang has always been a personal coupe first and foremost, with a V8 performance option.
      If someone wants to buy a Mustang without a V8, that's their business. The volume sales of the non-V8 versions makes it easier for Ford to make a business case for a V8 Mustang. If nobody bought the non-V8 Mustangs, the Mustang would probably cease to exist.

    It absolutely has fake sound. Look on the ceiling above the rear seats, there is a little microphone there. It both acts as noise cancelling via the speakers. And also adds a subtle pseudo-v8 rumble. Covering it up with something or pulling the fuse removes the sound.

  • @RBTURBINA1
    @RBTURBINA1 9 ปีที่แล้ว

    It's good that you like your car and driving may be but don't spread bs, here is something for you:
    Autoblog spoke with Ford engineer Shawn Carney who confirmed that only the turbocharged four-cylinder Mustang comes with this system, called Active Noise Control.
    The engine processor monitors torque output and changes things accordingly. "The intent is to be a natural experience,"
    So, in essence it is amplified sound of the engine which is fed via car stereo system speakers just inside the cabin and if you upgrade your stereo system then you are not going to have that sporty sound anymore.
    Autoblog is published in many countries, Ford is going to eat them alive if they just do it for popularity, they are not just some youtubers

    It's the same sound symposer used "fake sound" in the Focus ST and also used in the V8 mustang. It's not fake sound! It's just redirecting the engine notes it into the cabin. People that don't like it can buy a $20-25 symposer delete kit. It's a great option for people who keep the car mostly stock. If/when you upgrade the exhaust then you delete the "Fake sound" and you have a more natural sounding car. Great video btw subaruwrxfan !

    if your aftermarket speakers / subs are picking up engine noise from the car, disconnect the mic in the rear top headliner there should be a clip that you can stick your hand in and unplug it may take some time its a tricky clip you may need to just cut the wire but this will remove "Fake Engine Noise" from getting picked up on the sound system. Are they just using active noise cancellation to cancel out the "harsher" higher frequencies of the 4 cylinder to isolate the better sounding low-tones that would be heard from a v8? From the sounds of things, that is all they are doing. Which is also why it sounds quieter under certain conditions like idle.

    From what I've heard, fuse #27 is for the noise canceling amplifier; similar to the Bose noise canceling used in the new GM trucks as well as the new F150 Ecoboost. I believe Honda was the first to employ noise canceling technology in their Odyssey Touring and Elite models. Noise suppression is accomplished by playing back the exact opposite sound waves through the stereo speakers and has little to nothing to do with so-called fake sounds, only noise cancelation. So in that regard you are totally correct in your assertion.

  • @maximus9401
    @maximus9401 9 ปีที่แล้ว

    I can tell the difference with the symposer. It definitely takes the existing sound of the engine and just adds a deeper, reverberating sound. Almost like a rumble of some kind. Sounds better with the fuse in.

    @indiextronic 9 ปีที่แล้ว

    If you listen to 3:17 and 5:50 several times over, going from one, to the other, back to the other... It's very hard to distinguish the difference. There appears to be a very slight throaty induction noise amplification, but other than that it sounds the same. I wouldn't even use 'refined', just simply an amplification. I almost prefer it without the fuse put in.

  • @modernvisionscc

    One thing that always boggles my mind is why do American car makers put the fuse box into a place where you practically have to be a contortionist to access? They always put them against the firewall, above the footwell. Especially 40 years ago, when there was tons of room under the hood.
