  • Hi folks,
Heres a new old stock cassette recorder from 1997. In this video, I unpack it for the first time ever, open it up and try the recording. I then play back for you to hear it in all its glory...

Did you record a cassette using the Aux-in? I am curious how does it sound when it records from the aux cable.

Haha! That's cool! I had the 48K+ too 😄👍 We couldn't afford the '+2' with the built-in tape. In fact, I'm not sure it was out til later anyway. I really can't remember which cassette model I had for the Spectrum. Just vague memories of a plain black unit. You have a better memory than me 😂

can you record off of a laptop or phone using the headphone jack? If you can does the quality hold up? Great video 👍

Thanks for watching. You can record from the headphone jack, and you can adjust levels and eq on the digital recording. It is only mono though, so good for audio books, language courses, but not so for music. Thanks again 👍

Good video, if you plug in the ext to the headphone jack is it still in mono or does it play in stereo. Thank you

Thanks for watching. This is only a mono recorder, so would not provide a stereo out (only has a mono playback head). Cheers 👍

Whats the great song name toward the end of the video? Country singer?

Thanks for watching. The song is called 'Love You Once More' by Dylan Smith. The album 'Cruel To Be Kind' gets used a lot in my videos. It is available here. Thanks again!

Omg !! I own this player and im going crazy because i can't play any cassette :/ see at around 5:33 you see at the bottom a small piece with writen "HE02" its like a metal part that hides when you're not playing anything and only is supposed to show when you hit play. Well on mine it is visible 24/7 no matter what button i touch :(
I used this for a few months before a cassette got stuck, i think for the same reason.
Do you have any clue ? I'd love to be able to use this again 🙏

Thanks for watching. The piece you mentioned is the playback head - it's essentially what 'reads' the tape - so it gets pushed into contact on 'play' then should retract at all other times. Its on a carriage that moves, so it will either be stuck either due to dirt and dried grease 'gumming up' the mechanism, or perhaps a missing return spring or other mechanical issue. You'd struggle to remove the cassette if it's stuck in the play position - might be worth opening it up, then you can free anything that gets stuck. Just make sure it's unplugged as it's safer and not needed for the mechanims part to work.

@@retro_restos Thanks for your reply. I opened it and was able to push the playback head back, un-stucking the cassette. However now when I try to hit play, the head won't go far enough to reach the band of the tape and read it. I don't know anything about greasing so I don't have a clue on whether I can repair this somehow or not. Thanks for the help provided anyway 👍

@@retro_restos Oh and I also found the instructions manual online but did not find anything about grease, so of you happen to know which one I could use, feel free to share it 🙏
