the 5 things mentioned by the Scholar are: 1) get rid of your sins/taubah, 2) take prevention measures to avoid future sins, 3) start doing small good deeds consistently / KISS (keep it simple Sunnah), 4) Think forward/make progress, don’t think backwards, just because you are doing a sin, doesn’t mean you should not start another good deed - meaning, stop the sin and start the good deed simultaneously, 5) heaviest thing is the character - that’s the indication that you have Iman inside, becoming more religious/ritualistic should not make you become condescending and hurtful/bad-mannered/abusive towards others - Hadith - the person who was abusive to neighbor, prophet SAW said there is no good in such a person, in hell-fire - meaning Rituals without character are just superficial

So true, on the road to becoming a good muslim, there is a phase of "self righteousness" that is very dangerous...one can become a crappy person if they think they are superior due to their actions and start looking down on others. Humility is key. No one but Allah knows who is really sincere.
