  • At one point, ROBLOX was almost entirely built out of stolen clipart. This is the story behind those assets, and how they slowly evolved out of this stage.

Since this video is getting a lot of attention again, let me clarify a few things.
I should have clarified initially which assets were under creative commons licensing, but it's clear the developers at the time didn't care if they were free-to-grab or not. It's obvious they were grabbing what came up first on Google search results, i.e. them using the logos for entire companies as icons for in-game items. Sometimes, free sounds they took were stolen from other places themselves, such as the Oof sound and the bass sound, which was originally from Zero-G's Datafile 3, before being repackaged into a free sound collection on the A1 Free Sound Effects website in the early 2000s. Because of instances like this, I very highly doubt they paid for anything they used, *especially* with textures.
As well: The Silk icons used in Roblox Studio from early 2007 to 2022 *were initially* used with credit. However, the credit was completely removed from Studio, a few years later. Before that, in 2006, Roblox Studio used default Windows 95 icons.
And yes, this video came out before more things were discovered about the Oof sound by other creators. While the Oof sound was credited to simply "Tommy Tallarico Studios", with Tommy Tallarico taking credit for the sound himself, it's now known that someone else at the studio (Joey Kuras) was responsible.
You should watch Homberman's video about it if you have two hours to spare.
    Thanks ^_^
    ~Maple

The only reason Roblox used to be so careless about reusing assets is probably because yes they created the game hoping for a playerbase but they never expected it to grow so exponentially. So by the time it already had, the stuff they stole became most integral to their game than it ever was even towards the source material they were “borrowing” from.

    • @gianni50725
      @gianni50725 ปีที่แล้ว +7

That's not even true considering they had hundreds of thousands of players and still ignored the stolen assets. It's not like Roblox was totally unknown in 2008 (there were over 1 million players), it had more players than most online games ever had.
See here: 8:38 they had over 100,000 players by this point.

@@gianni50725 Well, I'd have to agree with OP. I found the game in late 2006 and joined in 2007. I always thought the game would shut down eventually. It was a small project compared to what it is now, indie projects weren't expected to survive for long and the trailer sucked. They also had competition from Blockland.
Nobody expected it to be so huge.
I vaguely remember playing in 2008-09, but the community still seemed small then.
You had more freedom to do what you wanted, and I used to get hit by other players in most servers I went to, so my character died constantly. I liked watching Roblox blooper videos on TH-cam, as well.
I went on a ton of MMOGs (over 200), including virtual worlds and MMORPGs... 1 million players meant nothing compared to the gigantic playerbases of Western and Asian MMORPGs, or even virtual worlds like Habbo Hotel. If I didn't play something, I'm at least aware of it.
Besides, I think that in 2008, there were 1 million accounts registered, not concurrent players.

I'll just make a correction regarding the Oof sound. It actually wasn't removed immediately when Tommy Tallarico found out about it in early 2020, they managed to come to an agreement during that time that allowed ROBLOX to continue using the Oof sound. However Tommy Tallarico in mid 2022, presumably due to financial troubles he ran into while developing the Intellivision Amico (which has often been described as a scam), likely demanded even more money from ROBLOX to allow them to continue using the Oof sound, which they refused to accept and instead created a new Oof sound.

Like the Microsoft 3.1 start-up sound, I legitimately would think "Ah, the Roblox badge sound effect" Nice video, was nice looking back at my childhood nostalgia a bit and picking it apart.

Friend of Phantom Forces dev here.
3 or so years ago Jailbreak stole the inverse kinematics source code of Phantom Forces, put it in their own game. This code was used for connecting the character's arms to weapons and so on. Anyways, once my friend found out, he reached out to Badimo and received a settlement. I won't go into more detail than that but you get the gist.

There’s something so retro and comforting about the old assets. Perhaps it was because the sound fonts were cartoony, and decals were unoriginal, that it felt familiar in an ironically innocent way. Now when you look at Roblox, you remember the wickedness behind the mask. Apart of growing up, I guess. Having nostalgia ruined by new discovery and insight.

I found out about Roblox around late 2006 or early 2007. I was a kid at the time. Roblox was a VERY indie game, something that was considered negative back then. The original trailer didn't look promising at all, and it took me ages to finally try it out. I thought it wasn't going to last.
I remember I discovered Blockland around the same time, but that one was always shareware. I tested it only a few times.
It doesn't surprise me that Roblox's developers stole assets, including the "oof" sound from Messiah. The game was relatively unknown in its early years (compared to other popular MMOGs with 10 million users+) and they had little budget to make their own content, so they didn't care about copyright infringement.
I believe that in 2008 they had 1 million sign-ups, not concurrent players.
Early Roblox was better, in my opinion. Very anarchic and fun, even though I'd die in 10 seconds because everyone attacked me. 😂
I used to love watching videos by Fleskhjerta and JJx15 (or whatever he was called).

@@4rumani I don't think I would call it massive. Not like it was unknown or underground, but it was nowhere near the level it is now. Thats why they got away with so many stolen assets, having users create games based off of popular IPs without having to censor or alter their names and properties, etc etc. It didn't even have support for mobile devices until right before I stopped playing, and even then it was only on the newest generation of ipad and maybe some other tablets.
