Edit 08/13: Didn't mention here, the mouse cursor and SpawnLocation textures were all made with a program called Paint Shop Pro. This same program is responsible for the 'creation time' timestamps within certain the files of certain textures. Since this video is getting a lot of attention again, let me clarify a few things. I should have clarified initially which assets were under creative commons licensing, but it's clear the developers at the time didn't care if they were free-to-grab or not. It's obvious they were grabbing what came up first on Google search results, i.e. them using the logos for entire companies as icons for in-game items. Sometimes, free sounds they took were stolen from other places themselves, such as the Oof sound and the bass sound, which was originally from Zero-G's Datafile 3, before being repackaged into a free sound collection on the A1 Free Sound Effects website in the early 2000s. Because of instances like this, I very highly doubt they paid for anything they used, *especially* with textures. As well: The Silk icons used in Roblox Studio from early 2007 to 2022 *were initially* used with credit. However, the credit was completely removed from Studio, a few years later. Before that, in 2006, Roblox Studio used default Windows 95 icons. And yes, this video came out before more things were discovered about the Oof sound by other creators. While the Oof sound was credited to simply "Tommy Tallarico Studios", with Tommy Tallarico taking credit for the sound himself, it's now known that someone else at the studio (Joey Kuras) was responsible. You should watch Homberman's video about it if you have two hours to spare. Thanks ^_^ ~Maple
The only reason Roblox used to be so careless about reusing assets is probably because yes they created the game hoping for a playerbase but they never expected it to grow so exponentially. So by the time it already had, the stuff they stole became most integral to their game than it ever was even towards the source material they were “borrowing” from.
That's not even true considering they had hundreds of thousands of players and still ignored the stolen assets. It's not like Roblox was totally unknown in 2008 (there were over 1 million players), it had more players than most online games ever had. See here: 8:38 they had over 100,000 players by this point.

I couldn't entirely blame them for doing this; I know young me ripped assets from everywhere all the time to accomplish things because copyright isn't always so obvious when you're first on the internet lol. Good history stuff tho.
I found out about Roblox around late 2006 or early 2007. I was a kid at the time. Roblox was a VERY indie game, something that was considered negative back then. The original trailer didn't look promising at all, and it took me ages to finally try it out. I thought it wasn't going to last. I remember I discovered Blockland around the same time, but that one was always shareware. I tested it only a few times. It doesn't surprise me that Roblox's developers stole assets, including the "oof" sound from Messiah. The game was relatively unknown in its early years (compared to other popular MMOGs with 10 million users+) and they had little budget to make their own content, so they didn't care about copyright infringement. I believe that in 2008 they had 1 million sign-ups, not concurrent players. Early Roblox was better, in my opinion. Very anarchic and fun, even though I'd die in 10 seconds because everyone attacked me. 😂 I used to love watching videos by Fleskhjerta and JJx15 (or whatever he was called).
i really hope this video doesn't make people go apeshit like last time when they realized that the hockey mask texture was from walmart, causing roblox to change it after 11 years, ruining the hat (and prices) forever.
There’s something so retro and comforting about the old assets. Perhaps it was because the sound fonts were cartoony, and decals were unoriginal, that it felt familiar in an ironically innocent way. Now when you look at Roblox, you remember the wickedness behind the mask. Apart of growing up, I guess. Having nostalgia ruined by new discovery and insight.
just in case you didn’t mention it or did and I just missed it, the slingshot sound is used in shows like SpongeBob, meaning they ripped THAT too. Found it while binge-watching up to season 6 of SpongeBob just because
iirc roblox only had a limited selection of music you could put in your places for a time, all if not most of these were stolen from other games or media. A highlight from me is that the song "tunnel" on roblox was taken directly from the rhythm game DJMax Trilogy. The song's original title is Zet, made by Bexter.
Virgin 2022 Roblox:"We are sorry guys but we are removing the oof sound because it was stolen from a free sample." Vs Chad 2006 Roblox: " *Yeah bro i just stole your assets whatcha gonna do?* "
the pre-2007 studio icons were most likely made by microsoft and are found in the visual studio 2005 (and 2008) image library which is what roblox used at the time for the client
Not to mention, the pumpkin bomb laughing sound effect comes from the horror character Chucky, and his laugh has continued to be used all over Roblox and is mostly used as a clown laugh.

I couldn't entirely blame them for doing this; I know young me ripped assets from everywhere all the time to accomplish things because copyright isn't always so obvious when you're first on the internet lol. Good history stuff tho.
2:08 you use the 3ds internet connection theme you are a w bro
I used to love watching videos by Fleskhjerta and JJx15 (or whatever he was called).
7:26 the more I watch this the funnier it gets
i really hope this video doesn't make people go apeshit like last time when they realized that the hockey mask texture was from walmart, causing roblox to change it after 11 years, ruining the hat (and prices) forever.
Found it while binge-watching up to season 6 of SpongeBob just because
Finally, some good damn content
iirc roblox only had a limited selection of music you could put in your places for a time, all if not most of these were stolen from other games or media.
A highlight from me is that the song "tunnel" on roblox was taken directly from the rhythm game DJMax Trilogy. The song's original title is Zet, made by Bexter.
8:42 that hand kinda looks like the one from the font 'Wingdings'
Virgin 2022 Roblox:"We are sorry guys but we are removing the oof sound because it was stolen from a free sample."
Vs
Chad 2006 Roblox: " *Yeah bro i just stole your assets whatcha gonna do?* "
The old assets definitely used to give Roblox more of a humble feeling, and it was nice because it wasn't seriously corporate as it is today.
4:05 who created this? I must know who made this masterpiece of art.
SharpTH, an old-school roblox/minecraft/etc youtuber that was most active around 2009 to 2011 th-cam.com/users/TheSharpTHOfLulz
NOoo SPONGEBOB
bass.wav still hits me like a truck when I'm not expecting it
the pre-2007 studio icons were most likely made by microsoft and are found in the visual studio 2005 (and 2008) image library which is what roblox used at the time for the client
Never noticed that the old Roblox Studio icons and Gmod's spawn menu icons were the same until now.
Finally a video we needed for years.
Also the Roblox "OST". It's just a bunch of stolen Nintendo or obscure video game music
Not to mention, the pumpkin bomb laughing sound effect comes from the horror character Chucky, and his laugh has continued to be used all over Roblox and is mostly used as a clown laugh.
Couldn’t they have just made… their own version of oof?
Just record it themselves and make it a little different
idk to be honest how to phrase this
covers are more fun
yk those games who have references for example of fnaf or other popular games??? thats kinda the point its just fun when u see something u already know in your favorite game
@@pop761 im making my own oof sound
Plagiarism probably
@Alguien Mas how? Thats like plagiarizing the word "English" many people have said oof and in other medias way before the original one
A+ for the editing on this one
What's more interesting is that there is a channel (Roblox Gear Sounds) that puts videos of gear sound effects and I got to say, my favorite sound if the Boo sound effect from the soccer ball gear.
Some icons from the silk pack are used in gmod for the spawn menu
0:13 is that sound effect from Yume Nikki?
@Wilfredo Yume Nikki Spotted lol
lil maple stole the sound effect!!
I like how this guy used old gif images to actually make it a perfect video
It's so fascinating to learn about the history of Roblox before I was even alive. It's so intriguing to me, yet i dont have a reason as to why it is. It simply just is
The glassbreak sound is actually used in Half-life too
@Bruner, The font wasn't stoled from Gorrilaz album, it is called Gill Sans Ultra Bold.
Its no suprise roblox did that but that years later the creators actually notice it and sue them is kinda weird
Had to go back as soon as I heard that the builders club hat was a stock image. Can't believe this
Loved the classic feel to this video, awesome stuff!!
Me and the person under me shat my pants.
I confirm that I shat my pants
Pixelcraftian’s comment is unpopular?!
6:56 that's how the builders club hat came to the game!
i used to make props and stuff on roblox when i was a kid and a bunch of my stuff showed up in really famous and popular maps but i never saw a lick of credit for them so i just stopped making stuff
I’m so glad I can finally know where those retro Roblox symbols are from! I tried to look for that stupid horse on the lavender baseball cap for so long. Thank you.
1:06 this should've been the new death sound lmao
1:06 spirit Halloween screaming
6:36 famfamfam is also known for the flag icons which are still used today on many websites
i really wish i could go back in time and play roblox again. i played 2013(as a guest) and in 2014-present day. 2014-2016 had a lot of really fun and good games. and ik this is a common complaint, but im really tired of simulator/pet collector games. its hard to find smth fun without being recommended it by someone else or tiktok bc the discovery page is awful.
A video that mentions Tommy without stopping to go on a tangent about how he's le evil christian. Amazing work.
Man, that oof sound effect was so nostalgic, it was my childhood sound. Alot of those original sounds were. I used to play alot of roblox when I was a kid.
Back when you were normal, good times I’d presume.
@BiggaMyMan I'm more "normal" now than I was as a kid tbh. But there's no such thing as "normal" normal is boring. I'm more proud of myself now than I ever have been.
I had been playing Roblox since the early days and haven't played in a few years now so alot of these textures and sounds are quite nostalgic actually
Stewie getting jumpscared by the mine was funny, i really love the editing in these videos.
the roblox horror music was made using christmas bell sounds Slowed down , thx to shedlesky
Honestly after realizing how many people took from who, I don't really feel so bad about taking assests from the left tab
damn that was pretty cool, the baby jump scares i surprisingly never saw my whole town playing roblox from 2011
Hellar toastedcherry I originally ordered my food to eat and watch your video and leave when I finished ate, I watch a your video all the way through, this one and many others. I had not gone out yet, I still might but I still watch your video. Very nice videos keep it up chery
whats funnier is that the old icons used in studio were also used in gmod
The old sounds and textures and even shadows made roblox dream like which make it look unique.
1:10 Goated song choice
We should shame Roblox for replacing the OOF sound.
They said no to a nostalgic sound for 10k when there a multi billionaire
Yeah shame roblox
7:01 I just wanted to know tf icon 10 is suppose to be
coming from october 15th
happy birthday toast!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I'm Brazilian, I couldn't understand half of the things you said, but your videos are very well edited and informative about roblox :)
I almost forgot that shedletsky worked at ROBLOX until I saw his Avatar 💀
To this roblox came out that long ago is crazy, just think how old the myths are that people still believe in
