I don’t know how to thank you enough! Every other TH-cam video showed people spraying down their painted popcorn ceilings and magically scraping them off. We tried so many different areas and no luck. Fast forward, we spend the next two days literally chiseling the stuff off. With my exhausted hand, I decided to do one more search and found your method. Scraping first to provide “holes” in the paint and using more vinegar did the trick. You are a life, and arm, and relationship saver!

The ones where they sprayed it and it came off were ones that weren't painted, if you haven't figured that out by now.

This video is a life-saver. Just bought a house with 36x58 open floorplan and it's all popcorn ceiling. Not a big deal, except I found out last night that it's painted. Not a lot of fun when dealing with 14' vaulted ceilings. My shoulders and sanity thank you, good sir.

      Pearl Perlita Venegas definitely!
1.) Prep your areas before doing anything. Light fixtures, ceiling fans, any obstructions; take them down or at least get them in a position where you can get everything off with 1 swipe.
2.) Start in an area that doesn’t get much use. This whole process is done mostly by feel so don’t be afraid to make mistakes. It’s just easier if it’s in an area where people won’t see those mistakes LOL
3.) Be patient and let the water soak in. I used a pump sprayer with an 8’ ext, covered it until it was damp, waited 5 minutes, did another spray, waited 5 minutes, and scraped. The time allows everything to soak evenly and it’ll sheet off very smoothly.
Aside from that, there’s not much to it. Start with a shallow angle on the tape knife and get more aggressive once you get comfortable with it. The most pressure I used was to make the initial “cuts” into the popcorn; after that, I was able to walk the knife and get clean 10-12’ scrapes.
And a respirator... definitely invest in a good one. I went with a 3M and aside from my shoulders hurting a little, I never felt bad.

I have sand texture stuff on every ceiling in the house. I used hot water to clean out an area around a hole we had to repair, but it didn't work that well. The addition of the vinegar makes _such_ a difference-and this is so simple! I've been watching videos of sanding and scraping and was going to just give up on the whole idea-but not now. _THANK YOU!!_

likely a stupid question, but will it have to be filled in and evened out with drywall compound? Sanded? before painting. My understanding is builders do this as the easy/cheap/lazy way of finishing off a ceiling so that it is flat and smooth, so I wonder if anyone has had surprises underneath the popcorn? How much time would it take for one person to completely remove a popcorn ceiling that is 12 x 17?

Tim Davis problem is just water didn’t work on my painted popcorn. So I went with the vinegar tec. I have a video showing how I use an air hose with spigot attachment and a sprayer hooked to the other end. I then hook this to the hot water line behind me washing machine and go throughout the house and spray and scrape as needed with hot water. The hot water really helps to soften the popcorn

If your house was built pre 70’s that means from like 79 and before is when you should check for asbestos. Anything 80’s or newer you should be good. At least in California
