I have both the D-Lux 8 and an M11. Last week I was asked to shoot a portrait of a fellow photographer to use on the about page of his website. Shooting for another photographer is always tough because they have their own esthetic and are keenly aware of details. Since it was to be an environmental portrait, I shot both cameras at about the same 50mm focal length, and the same f/5.6 aperture. I used my Leica 50mm Summicron v5 on the M11. In the end he chose to use a shot from the D-Lux 8. This because that image better captured a moment and look that he felt better expressed what he was trying to communicate to his viewers. The M11 system produces undeniably the best technical IQ when compared to the D-Lux 8. However, the D-Lux 8 produces excellent IQ within a range of ISO and use cases. As always it is the story and the communication that an image captures that is the most important thing, not the camera system, nor small differences in IQ. I thoroughly enjoy the convenience, and the authentic Leica shooting experience that the super fun little D-Lux 8 provides.
The D-Lux 8 is a cute little camera that packs a punch. Owning a Q3 myself I would have been really interested seeing a comparison between D-Lux 8’s native / optical 50mm and 75mm zoom and respective 50 - 75mm crops on the Q3. In theory the D-Lux should produce sharper images at least at 75mm.
I did not compare this because it looks totally different. It is physics… a 28mm cropped to a 75mm still looks like a 28mm ;-) You can take any 28mm and test it yourself. Sure, on the Q3, you have a f1.7, but the distortion stays… I never crop more than about 35mm; it just looks wrong to me.
@@flofroschmayer i fully agree with you that a 50mil lens ist not the same perspective as a crop. However, cropping the Leica Q3 to 35 (easily) and to 50mm still delivers impressive results, even for non-environmental close shot portraits. For a 28mm (or shall I say 26 :-) the Q3 has a relatively mild distortion, and as long as one’s not too close to the subject and centers it in the frame the distortion remains unobtrusive. In that sweet spot being not too close and not too far away you can even get a bit of that f/1.7 bokeh while cropping to 50mm. So despite not an actual 50mm lens perspective I think one can get away with it first glance. But it is of course more cumbersome than shooting with an actual 50. At 75mm though it really falls apart from the perspective POV. Anyway, coming back to the D-Lux, I would have nonetheless been interested in the actual sharpness compared to the Q at 50 and 75. What is a bit sad is Leica’s JPEG game. Especially in the case of the D-Lux 8 I envy the Fuji x100 folks for the film simulations. Sometimes you just don’t want to edit RAWs (or jpegs) and those Fuji film simulations are really really good looking SOOC. Even if the D-Lux had the Leica App Looks, those are not the same as the Fuji film simulations when I compared the Leica Looks on the Q3 with a friend’s x100vi. As much as I like the D-Lux and its zoom flexibility which is really a great asset, the look of the jpegs SOC holds me back buying it.
The D-Lux 8 is the best bang for the buck if you just need a good camera for back-up, added flexibility. and to have in your pocket. I have the Leica Q2M and got the D-Lux 8 for a general carry and family events. Going to the SL or M route is $$$. For me the D-Lux 8 made much sense. You really needed to bring up how the Menu system on both are nearly identical and easy to navigate. Having stored profiles adds to each's flexibility to adapt to various situations. Then there is the issue of analog zoom vs digital zoom. I know that the Q2 or Q3 sensor is much better, but that is a trade-off. Using my D-Lux 8 it is like having a mini version in my pocket and hands. So familiar.
I am in the queue for a D-Lux 8 and it will be my first Leica. I want it as a convenient, everyday, lightweight camera that is going to be well-made. I have a full frame camera with interchangeable lenses for those days when I want image quality above all else, but from what you say I think the D-Lux 8 will provide me with exactly what I am looking for. Thanks for this informative video.
Nice video, a lot of worked involved for the comparison. I think the DLux8 does as well as expected given its using an ultra compact zoom and only using part of a M43 sensor, against a Prime lens on 35mm sensor. Point should be made I feel that you have only compared the 2 using the worst scenario for the Dlux8. Had you used a comparison using the long end of the DLUX8 zoom "75mm equiv" for example the results would not have been quite so favourable for the Q3 as you would have had to crop in significantly .. perhaps still better but much closer at least.
You are absolutly right! This is something I mentioned in my initial D-Lux8 Video. You will never geht a 75mm feel when you crop a Q3 image. It stays a croped 28mm... and I am not only talking resoulution wise... just the whole opitcal feel is much nicer with a real 75!
Nice video, very informative. Coming from a Sony FF system and big bulky lenses, soon after the Q3 was released, I sold off my kit to simplify life. Honestly if the focal length of the Q3 wasn’t 26 or 28mm, I would be ok. Instead, I’m thinking about making a change; either to hold it and purchase something Leica preowned that’s digital with interchangeable lenses that I can afford or perhaps Leica with a zoom like the new D-Lux. Alternatively I’m thinking about going in another direction with a film body with a M6 or new MP with a nice pre-owned Leica 35mm or 50mm Summicron lens which would necessitate selling off my Q3. I shoot primarily street, architectural, and travel. Based on your familiarity and love for Leica, which direction would you suggest?
You can not exchange lenses on the D-Lux 8; it is a fixed-attached zoom lens. If you want to exchange lenses, you need to look at the SL system. Have a look at the SL2-you’ll get it used at a very good price at the moment! And you have the whole world of L-Mount and M-Mount lenses available to you. The M-System, of course, is fantastic, but it is a decision to choose a different system and a different way of taking pictures. But you’ll also get some very good used stuff. If you are truly thinking about going all in on film, go with a used M6 and maybe a 35mm to start… This could be a good starting point to build your kid… and if at one point you miss the digital, get an SL2 with an M to L adapter. You can still use the M lenses. The only thing you are missing is AF. You could also look at a used 24-70 L from Leica (or another brand) to have the digital zoom capability. Building a set over the year is a very fun thing to do!
@@flofroschmayer thanks so much for your response. As mentioned I sold off my Sony gear because it was too heavy and bulky; before purchasing my Q3, I picked up an SL3 and lens at the Leica Store and it was even bigger than the Sony FF…the financial barrier for purchasing a digital M camera like a M10 or M11 with a 35mm or 50nm Leica lens even pre-owned far exceeded the cost of a new Q3…but not having interchangeable lenses is a mistake for me (the Q3 checked off a lot of boxes however it’s 26 or 28mm fixed focal length IMO is too wide for everyday use whereas a fixed 35mm or 50mm would have been perfect). Versatility and cost are two of the factors contributing to considering making a switch into a M6 or MP with pre-owned 35mm Leica lens and selling of my Q3. Again the best move no doubt would be purchasing an M10 or M11 if it wasn’t out of reach for me.

@@kirchnha Okay.

True! One of the reasons why the Leicas are so expensive... people forget that.
